Me neither.. the guy definitely isn't dominant. Confident and smug, yes. Being dominant doesn't suit his character at all, he is someone who wants others to make decisions for themselves.

I had Dorian, Solas, and Cass with me - romancing Solas, obviously. Apparently Dorian cares about my well-being more than Solas... (got that impression when asking their opinions as well)

I think its just a fantasy. You find 'marking' in a lot of fandoms. Its so common that that I don't even bat my eyes at it anymore. 

 

Some people like the fantasy of being dominated. Most people realize that in the real world that's not appropriate, but in the realm of fiction...its just like any other fetish, more or less. We could probably speculate endlessly on the various causes for it, but I'd say its mostly harmless. People like what they like.

 

It definitely isn't for me, but it is what it is. I don't think it really has anything to do with Solas as a character. 

 

Yeah, "marking" is a popular concept among Garrus fanfics, too.  I've read some where it's a turian custom to "mark" their life-mates.  It's just a fetish/fantasy for the "inner beast" in Solas they want to see unleashed.  I see it as harmless, too.

 

It's kind of like the whole sub/dom relationship dynamic- which I was in once.  The idea of being completely dominated or dominating someone else is a fetish that many like.  "Marking" someone is a form of dominance (though I can see/agree with how the possessiveness and jealousy that go with it could be unhealthy).

I'm just glad I haven't seen fic yet where the other companions beat Solas up for leaving Lavellan or something like that.

 

I've seen that trope come up before outside of Dragon Age and it always makes me cringe. Solas probably deserves a punch for a lot of things but daring to end a relationship is not one of them. Everyone has the right to leave a relationship even if it makes the other person sad.

I think people sort of mix up Solas' characterization with dom traits because it's easy to do. Solas is without a doubt experienced, he's a man who knows what he likes and what he wants. He's passionate, calculating, and seems to enjoy "mind-games"... in battle-of-wits I-like-it-when-you're-clever sort of way. His kisses certainly show no signs of hesitance when it comes to how he physically expresses himself... however, despite all these facts, I don't seem him as a dom.

 

Because of his past, I do not think power-play dynamics (where he is the one in power) would bring him pleasure because, lets face it, he named himself after his biggest vice. In fact, I think the idea of him lording himself over another, even in a playful setting, just would bring up things from his past he'd rather leave in the past. Not in a traumatic fashion, but he's just a different person now - not the wild bad-tempered youth he once was. 

 

I can see him being a confident lover, certainly attentive - but never restraining or wanting a subservient partner. 

 

That being said I still find Dom!Solas hot. But I can see him loving Lavellan on top more than himself.

On top of that, he also seems to be craving an equal out of his partner. That's why he's so enamored with Lavellan showing a wisdom he's never seen before, an intelligence that can match his own. That would probably factor into the physical relationship too. I'm don't think he'd enjoy a subservient partner in the least!

I'm happy to see others agreeing that they don't see Solas as a Dom. I am on tumblr a lot, and there's a strong "Dominant Solas Trash Club" presence, some of whom seem personally offended by the idea that people don't agree with their HC of Solas being dominant? I don't really understand being that personally invested in your headcanon, but oh well.

I'm more inclined to believe he likes to be chased, to be pursued by someone whose interest he values. He wants the Inquisitor to show their interest in him. I don't really see him as jealous or even possessive (outside of a select few cases) because sometimes I think he honestly doesn't believe anyone else can compete with him. If Lavellan leaves him, he accepts it because it's the smart play but if she wants him and gives him permission...

 

He's a god, he's used to being in power and having power over others. I don't get the feeling he enjoys it or enjoys having others in his power. Their entire relationship is Lavellan making all the moves and everything is her choice from start to finish except the breakup. She's in control, she seeks him out, and he reciprocates when she does.

Eh, that never happened to me when I was a sub in a relationship (and after we broke up), thankyouverymuch.  There's possessive/aggressive behaviors, and then there's consensual sub/dom dynamics.  We had a mature, healthy relationship with respect and boundaries.  And we're still friends.

Weird thing, though- and I'm kind of curious what you guys think.  There is a lot of marking going on.  

 

Is it the wolf thing?   'Cause aside from that, it seems like something that would be a huge hang-up for Solas, and not in a good way.   The undertone of... well, possession... would drive him up a wall.   Maybe I'm reading too much into his character or their final scene, but it seemed like one of the things that drives him away wasn't just that he had Serious Business To Deal With, but also a determination that you remain free and unfettered.   ....even from him.

First and foremost is that it's kinkmeme...but that aside...Spoilers because talkin' about NSFW stuff and b/c of general length

The wolf thing is probably a factor. Solas is normally so calm in game that a lot of people like to see him a little more feral in fanfiction. The idea of being able to undo someone that is so tightly guarded is seductive to a lot of people.

 

I think he breaks it off with her more because she doesn't know what she's consenting to in a relationship with him (along the same process as whatever he says at the beginning of Cole's quest. Something about how asking doesn't mean something isn't an abuse), not because of the general concept of an exclusive relationship. From his general dialogue - including when he comments on other relationships - I don't think he sees being with someone as hindering their freedom. In fact I'd argue that breaking up with Lavellan in the way that he did is actually taking away a lot of her autonomy but that's just me....

 

As far as the marking goes (got a little OT), I see it as a little but not tremendously out of character depending on the degree. Despite his love of freedom, he has no problem telling people what is best for them, making decisions for them, or being the sole arbiter of right/wrong. He's not a total free-thought, free-will pacifist and he has no trouble taking charge when he thinks that's what's necessary. I could see him getting a little carried away with biting, offering to heal the marks and Lavellan waving him off. I could also believe that it's a subversion of and rebellion against general rules of decorum. Anything more dominant than that and my ability to suspend disbelief wanes quickly. Doesn't mean I don't still want to read it because I'm a horrible person, but it's more like AU Solas >.>

The thing I love about the Solas and the Anders romance both, is just the feeling of how much they want Hawke/Lavellan. A lot of the romances, you don't really get that.

 

UST is one of my favorite romance tropes ever, and both Solas and Anders' romances just burst with it.  Anders' kiss scene is IMO also the precursor to the awesome kissing we get in DA:I; it's like at some point along the line, BioWare realized that kissy sound effects really add to the illusion of hot makeouts 

 

It does kill it a bit when I think about the VAs having to make out with the backs of their hands, though.
