I felt so trapped by that game, location and story wise so I never finished it. I have way to many DAO saves and I think DAI will be an obsession for a long time, like DAO. I think I even threw the DA2 discs away...

And watching those rival scenes makes me even gladder they got rid of friendship/rivalry. Hooboy, that Anders scene was something else. "I hate you and everything you stand for and yet I am completely unhealthily obsessed with you!" *smooch*

 

The Fenris scene, while not quite as bad, kinda squicked me out too. Nothing like giving someone who's in a lot of emotional pain a hard time when he comes to you in order to apologize. The friendship scene was a lot more supportive (and kept the wall-slam kiss).

RE: dominant Solas... Personally, I think he's the type to top from the bottom. He's confident and experienced, but it seems like he'd enjoy directing his lover while still letting her take the lead. I don't really see him as the typical "alpha" type that's so common in romance novels, etc.

Do you stalk Samson in DAI too? O.o he's voiced by Gideon Emery... I get that though haha, actually the thing I found most hilarious about Skyrim is that Elenwen, the high elf thalmor lady, is voiced by the same person who voiced Meredith in DA2. It's like, you go from voicing the most anti-magic character we've ever seen, to voicing an elf mage. This amused me greatly when I first drew the connection

Yeah, rivalmance was like taking advantage of Fenris, I could never do that. It makes me feel dirty in a bad way.

Yeah, the first few times it was funny and I just covered it while I shook my head a bit, but when it was there for a month + because he kept re-doing it even when it was tender and hurt when touched that's when it got problematic.

 

Dom!Solas, I think, would be an on occasion sort of thing. Like a desire to be dominant for him would build up a bit and eventually he would be for a time, but if he did it too frequently I think it would start to cause problems for him and conflict with his preference for people to have freedom.

 

Yeah, I can see what you mean.  That is unhealthy and I'm just sorry you had to go through all of that.  I'm glad you were able to break away and move, though (and I really hope I don't sound patronizing or anything).

Bolded part: This is why I say it is selfish. Basically, as the person doing the breaking up, you are only considering your own hurt. If they decide to risk their life for you, that's their choice. What makes this trope so annoying to me is people think this is selfless, because wow it must suck to break up with someone you love (ignoring the fact that you just broke their heart too)! But you're doing it to protect them, so the end justifies the means!

 

I'm sorry, no it doesn't. Real relationships have a foundation of respect in them, and if you don't respect someone enough to let them make their own choice, then you are being selfish. Leaving someone to protect them is more about protecting yourself from the hurt of losing them if they died, or the guilt if they got hurt because of you. Notice every time this trope comes up they always say (or think) something along the lines of "I couldn't live with myself if something happened to you". Proof: It's your pain you're trying to avoid, not theirs, no matter how much you tell yourself otherwise.

 

Sorry I probably sound really angry but this is such a sore point for me. I'm all about freedom, choice, and knowledge, so the idea of someone making choices for me by denying me knowledge just make me grrrrr.

 

Now I'm not denying that it is a hard thing to do! I agree with you there. Letting someone risk themselves for you is incredibly hard. Which is what I mean when I say the trope annoys me: it's a copout. It's the coward's way out, not bravery or selflessness as it's often made out to be.

I did not! But I heard the voice. It was different, and differently accented somehow? It did help me feel extreme pity for Samson, but then I was also annoyed that they didn't just include Fenris in DA:I, even for a small part where he shows up to get Hawke or whatever, or he shows up with her and doesn't say much. I was not impressed with the way they handled the lack of Fenris. I was like "He's already in this game! Just give him a few Fenris lines!"
