While I agree with the sentiment, I have to say the trope of "leaving them for their own good" always infuriated me (which is why I am so angry at Solas!). You mostly see it in the comic book or superhero genre, but it pops up in literature and games all the time too. I mean, if you really cared about them and think of them as an equal, you'd lay it all out and let them make the choice for themselves. To assume that they're too weak to handle whatever fallout is involved with loving you, while also making them lose you, is selfish and patronizing, not romantic or selfless!
This x1000. Or, if you know that the relationship will be short-lived you use your words to /say that/ at the beginning and let the other person decide if that is alright with them.

I see the points you are making on leaving being a jerk move, but as I mentioned before, I have done that and that was based on respect and love for that person. He never felt he could reach me and he was right, no one ever can. I did tell him why I left though, but I'm not sure if that did anything.
I can't change that part of me, that would be wrong for the both of us. 15 years later, I think he hardly remembers me, I sure do remember him. I gave him the freedom of not always feeling frustrated and to get over it. I can't.
Edit; When I think about it, I'm not completely unreachable, it's just that I tend to click more on a intellectual level (not as in IQ but as "let's debate this till it's completely shredded to pieces), he was such a sweet, caring and emotional guy who just couldn't cope with me being a space cadet.

Do you stalk Samson in DAI too? O.o he's voiced by Gideon Emery... I get that though haha, actually the thing I found most hilarious about Skyrim is that Elenwen, the high elf thalmor lady, is voiced by the same person who voiced Meredith in DA2. It's like, you go from voicing the most anti-magic character we've ever seen, to voicing an elf mage. This amused me greatly when I first drew the connection
Worse yet, an Elf Mage who thinks the only people in Tamriel who are worthy of life or basic human rights are other elf mages .. in DAI she would be part of the elven nobility Fen Harel was fighting against ...

I once left someone "for his own good" and it was definitely out of love and respect. He was/is the kind of person who would end up miserable in my company eventually, either because he stayed who he was ( and we were very different people) or changed his values to match mine. He is happy now, as am I.
Did anyone else want to give Solas a hat in Haven or when you're trekking to Skyhold? I felt sorry for him and his cold head 
Yeah, I can see what you mean. That is unhealthy and I'm just sorry you had to go through all of that. I'm glad you were able to break away and move, though (and I really hope I don't sound patronizing or anything).
I got so annoyed when he'd pin me down as I'd yell at him to stop and he'd and leave hickies. Ugh- @ssholes
Well... my fiance does do that on the rare occasion, but I get him back for it sooner or later. muahaha

The funny thing is that he's the one that broke it off, but I moved on. He did not. He has a new girlfriend but he still frequently looks up my accounts online (even my WoW characters through a name I had only used once when with him and that he shouldn't remember unless he went through chatlogs) and complains to a mutual friend about anything I do. According to the friend the whole breakup thing is a bigger deal to him than I know, or care to know. That's what the initial (tasteless) joke was referencing xD

Of course, when they DID give him a hat it was the awful clipping monstrosity of nose clippage 
I headcanon that my Lavellan knits him a hat. A stupid, orange striped hat with a pom pom on top because it makes her giggle. He refuses to wear it where anyone can see, but he does put it on occasionally at night when his noggin gets chilly.

As much as I like to imagine Solas can walk on top of the snow like an elf in LOTR, he'd still be very cold.

Bolded part: This is why I say it is selfish. Basically, as the person doing the breaking up, you are only considering your own hurt. If they decide to risk their life for you, that's their choice. What makes this trope so annoying to me is people think this is selfless, because wow it must suck to break up with someone you love (ignoring the fact that you just broke their heart too)! But you're doing it to protect them, so the end justifies the means!
I'm sorry, no it doesn't. Real relationships have a foundation of respect in them, and if you don't respect someone enough to let them make their own choice, then you are being selfish. Leaving someone to protect them is more about protecting yourself from the hurt of losing them if they died, or the guilt if they got hurt because of you. Notice every time this trope comes up they always say (or think) something along the lines of "I couldn't live with myself if something happened to you". Proof: It's your pain you're trying to avoid, not theirs, no matter how much you tell yourself otherwise.
Sorry I probably sound really angry but this is such a sore point for me. I'm all about freedom, choice, and knowledge, so the idea of someone making choices for me by denying me knowledge just make me grrrrr.
Now I'm not denying that it is a hard thing to do! I agree with you there. Letting someone risk themselves for you is incredibly hard. Which is what I mean when I say the trope annoys me: it's a copout. It's the coward's way out, not bravery or selflessness as it's often made out to be.
Both sides of the argument come off as only letting one person's feelings matter, now that I look at it. It's either Solas' decision not to let someone get hurt for him that's denied or it's Lavellan's decision to risk getting hurt for him that's denied. It sucks either way. It's kind of a no-win situation.

See, I thought that so I've been trying to compare it to the videos I have of Dorian laughing. Dorian tends to always do a 'heh heh' kind of laugh. It's the throat clear that's throwing me off. I can imagine Solas doing that to compose himself back into his normal state, more so than Dorian. But it does sound a bit like Dorian.

I'm trying to find a video of this in action but I can't find anything. Am I going to have to romance Bull and run around with Solas and Cole on my team to figure this out!?
...Because I probably would if I had the time...
