@gervaise, we don't know his age yet, just that he's around Blackwall's.

I just find it funny that there's people that are actually bothered by characters being around the 30s-40s age range and are therefore (to them) inherently 'too old' to romance without it being weird.

Woooaaahhh guys. I like... I feel REALLY ODD saying this, but I had my first Dragon Age related dream that wasn't me taking 5evar in the character creator. It's like... woooaahhh. I finally passed some rite of passage. (In truth, I think it's because I've been going crazy over this Sera costume this past week that's making me a little cuckoo) It was really nothing amazing story-wise. It was just a 'woah, this is strange' sort of happening.

The first 'run' of the dream I think I was just a human Inquisitor or something because instead of me observing things from a distance, I was seeing things through my eyes. All I remember is that I was outside in some snowy area (I think it was the Emprise du Lion) and Sera and Iron Bull were in my party. Things get kinda fuzzy in my mind now, but all I can really remember is talking to Sera and thinking how 'cute' she is. (Honestly, I think she was my LI in this version due to her mannerisms and how she spoke to me) At some point the scene suddenly shifts to a gala, which was quite under underwhelming by Orlesian standards, I think it was my brain doing a very poor job constructing Halamshiral. I was going around chatting with individuals who I was not registering as cannon character in the dragon age series when, out of the corner of my eye, I see my companions lingering towards the walls. Solas must have been my third party member because he was present, but when I approached him it wasn't exactly Solas. It was Solas with his hairstyle from the war-room picture only it was grey and specifically remember stating 'oh noooo... they gave you hair.' I went to talk to him but his words were muffled, kind of like when you're playing a game and something noisy is happening outside and you can't exactly hear them talking until you turn up the volume to an ungodly level. At that point I paused the game (and essentially broke the forth wall) as I desperately tried to find a subtitle option for dialogue in the menu. However, I kept going through different menus and then returning to the 'game' only to find a sky rift has caused monsters to pour into my game and the opportunity to speak to Solas was interrupted as we prepared for battle.

Unhappy with my goof up, I 'restarted' the game. Low and behold, I find myself playing some sort of demo I managed to find on my xbox marketplace. I realize I may or may not have had access to it as it was asking for some password thing when I re-selected it. I totally BSed some sort of password (I honestly think I was starting to type in my username here) and I was allowed to start from my last 'save point'. Back to Emprise du Lion, this time Iron Bull, Cole, and what looked like the default female qunari Inquisitor were in my party. (She was dressed very fancy which made me think my brain was attempting to construct the ball at Halamshiral) Once again the scene switches and I'm in Halamshiral, but I'm exploring instead of talking to people in fear I would 'trigger' the fade rip again. I go around the area searching for Solas so I could hear what he had to say about this. Sadly, I can't find him or any of my other companions. I leave the area and enter a fancy hall (this one was Halamshiral worthy, good job brain) and SURPRISE! There is Solas. A Solas without the strange hair he had in the prior version. His mannerisms were different than the Solas I encountered in the previous 'play through'. Instead of being stoic and distant he was more personable and friendly, which makes me think he was the LI for this 'play through' instead of Sera. I somehow asked him where the heck he was and he said he had been scouting out the area in concern for our safety.

Of course, this is when the dream started warping and I woke up.

Anyway, I just feel really odd having a video game related dream THAT ISN'T EVEN OUT! I swear my cosplay is driving me crazy.

 

We have another Solas dreamer! Yessss.

I'm not worried about Solas' age being a reason for him not being a LI.  Varric's about the same age,  Blackwall looks to me like he could be pushing 50, but is surely no younger than early 40s, Cullen must be at least 30, and it sounds like Iron Bull has been around so I'd guess that he's at least in his 30s too but could easily be 40.  So, amongst the potentials there's not a massive difference in age.

 

I'm okay with them not wearing shoes so long as they don't go on about stepping in stuff as mentioned earlier in thread.  I can head cannon that they have more robust feet than humans, and the more you walk barefoot, the tougher your feet become... OH, but rough toes... a bit ewww.

The last Dragon Age Inquisition dream I had didn't involve so much Solas (unfortunately). I dreamt that it was October and I received my copy of DAI but when I put it into my computer, it didn't work. So I smashed my computer and ran to my college's library and tried to put it into one of those computers and it STILL didn't work. At this point I was so freaked out about people spoiling the game for me by some kind of telepathic magic that I started looking around frantically for another computer. Then I saw another student a little ways away from me on another computer and he was playing DAI. So I full on shoved him out of his seat and replaced his game with mine and started to play. I played through the character creator partway and was getting angry because the game wouldn't let me put horns on my Qunari when I woke up.

 

I suppose this means that the wait for this game is frustrating me quite a bit! The tone of that dream was rather angry

Cullen's age was listed as 24 in the DA:O toolset but those are more for VA references than character accuracy.  I had a dream involving Solas a little while ago but it wasn't an exciting Thedas adventure, he was at a party with me in the real world helping me find a ring that I lost   Dragon Age does weird things to us!

OH my gosh! The frantic hunt for a computer that can play it. Haahaha you broke your computer. Oh dreams are very funny. I think I'd be mad if I couldn't put horns on my Qunari as well.

I'm 24.5, which is annoying to me because what I consider my 'internal life progress perception' is more at 20-22 at the oldest. What a waste of a couple years, as far as I sometimes consider it..

 

But 40something isn't old. Or rather, it is a VARY ranging age. Some in their 40s who don't have stress, illness, genetics, etc affecting them, will even look securely into their 20s - but others in their 40s... that's when they 'let it go' and might even be considered to be in their 60s. Much easier to determine the age of those in their 20s-30s (young adult to adult) and 50s-60s (adult to old adult). 40s is that weird middle ground, so it isn't surprising that while some actually look *and* feel young enough then, others look at their aging body and place in life, compare it to other 40somethings, and go 'Dammit, I need to get younger looking/do the things I should have done when younger/leave whatever relationship I'm in to date someone in their 20s'.

 

Anyway, Solas being in 40s totally works. 30s or 40s would have. I'd be curious if he was in 50s, and a bit confused if he was in 20s.

What I find funny is that before there was a given age for Solas, fan art made him look fairly young. Now I see some new stuff that has him looking older and wrinkled like a grumpy grandpa or something. Fan perception is hilarious.

 

As far as being a love interest is concerned, I suppose that's a big problem if person self-inserts rather than roleplays a character. What do I care if the PC is 22 or 40 or 51? It ain't me, so I enjoy the story from their perspective and background. More fun that way.

Oh, I just loooveeee it! The shifting styles I mean. As much as I love the young!Solas pictures I see around (cause they're so cute and make him look like a precious bab), I always interpreted Solas as having a more mature look. Then again, I always liked the aesthetics appeal of 'older' looking characters. A characters life doesn't have to stop after 30. At least that's often the case concerning female characters. Male characters not so much. Older looking Cassandra with fine lines and a striking face and older Solas with his under-eye wrinkles, they're all wonderful.

They're like "Oh, Solas is in his 40s? Wow how old!" Even though I'm not even in my 30s and a lot of people my age consider that old, I don't!


They're also missing the fact that Cassandra and others are nearly as old haha

Yeah, I always get the awkward 'Hows school going' and 'you got many exams to do' questions from complete strangers. The best ones though is going into a convenience store during the day, getting suspicious stares from the owners, and then being asked if I should be out of school at that time... *facepalm*

But theres always the added bonus of not having to pay adult prices for things \o/

Anyway, back to dat Solass I really can't see them stopping him being a romance just because of his age. Wouldn't make sense.

Ha ha ha... I feel kinda bad because I am guilty of attempting self-insert in games, such as Mass Effect.

But I can't really do that in the Dragon Age universe due to limitations with the character creator. This time around I miiighhhttt be able to do it more successfully with a dwarven female, but who knows. If anything I'm kind of glad because it allows me to make a character greater than myself, like a qunari female. I always adore the 'tough gal' characters who are often not conventionally attractive. So when I get the chance to play a character like so I take it.

I think some individuals are like 'gasp! he's old' because of how old Blackwall seems. A lot of individuals have stated he reminds them of their father, grandfather, so on and so forth. So for Solas to be lasso-ed into the same group with the 'kids these days' remark, I think some individuals are subconsciously relating Blackwall = father & Solas = father age too. Personally, I'm a bit odd-ed out that Solas is around the age of my dad, but then I remember I rarely play a character my age because I doubt they'd have the experience and wisdom to handle the situations hurled at them. So then it doesn't bother me from a roleplay perspective.

I personally like the maturity of older guys, it's a bit shallow but they seem less dudebro-party to me. Though I'm a bit of an old soul... So Solas' personality really speaks to me. I hope if he is a LI, he's romantic and sentimental.

I mostly lurk in the different threads, but everyone here is nice and light hearted. Some of the other threads can get so serious. Some people can take things way too serious - looks of character, feeling slighted because "I can't romance character X" etc. It's nice in here.

Blackwall has probably been tainted for a while / might die soon and looks like everyones father

Varric I think is unlikely because they keep saying how much he loves Bianca

And Cole's a big no no

 

The only competition I see is IB, though he might just be more of a fling after all

Well, self-inserting isn't a bad thing unless it causes mental hangups that prevent you from enjoying some aspects of the story. Such as romancing someone that is 42 when you are only 20 in real life and it makes you feel odd because that's what you also consider your character to be.

 

I get the part about having companions resembling real life family making things odd whether or not you're self-inserting. Solas somewhat resembles a cousin of mine who passed away, but his being bald actually helps remove some of the resemblance. I'm grateful for that, especially if he does end up being a companion you can romance.

Lighthearted is what I do best, everyone must laugh everyday...at least once, preferrably a lot!
