It made me feel a little bad.
I could picture it saying "Are you my mommy, now?"

Cole: Her body writhing in the sheets, a soft gasp. The dream is over. But was it a dream? She never knows. You should tell her. You enjoy the dreams as much as she.
Lavellan: Ohhh. So they aren't just dreams.
Solas: ~chuckles~ No, vhenan.

Taming the dragon at Mythal's shrine is the only reason I would ever drink from the Well.

Sera: So, Solas, eh?
Lavellan: Yes...?
Sera: Hadn't figured you liked em so.. elfy. Is he always that stiff though?
Bull: *laughs*
Sera: What?
Blackwall: *snorts*
Lavellan: Well he can be plenty stiff in all the right places ![]()
Sera: I hadn't... ugh! Stop it!
True, but don't forget that chess match with Iron Bull. Solas is scary good at games in general, I think.
Plus, Solas had only just learned. Here's the quote from Blackwall.
"Don’t play Diamondback with Solas. You’ve been warned. Taught him the game last night, and he turned right around and beat me at it! Lost everything. Had to walk back to my quarters with only a bucket for my bits."
I'm not. I'm just remembering that poker, black jack, and chess are all very different games that require different qualities in order to be good at them. Poker is about intuition, it's about being able to make accurate assessments of multiple opponents within a very short frame of time and bluff accordingly. You have to be able to balance sitting back and waiting with going with your gut. It's entirely built around slight of hand. Fooling people yes, but also being able to adjust quickly. Josephine, for example, is very good at Wicked Grace because she's a diplomat. It's her job to be good at reading people and to be able to bluff them into submission when she's holding nothing. You can't go into it with a single minded strategy and expect to emerge victorious, there are too many variables. You have to accept that others will be studying you closely in order to gain an advantage, looking for tells, looking for lies, looking for anything they can use to figure out whether you're telling the truth. Solas isn't going to want to be under that much scrutiny, especially up against master players like Josephine and Varric as they'd be more than likely to get a beat on the same strategies he takes out into the actual world. It requires cunning and a very specific kind of mental flexibility, it's a very social game.
I'm going to guess that Diamondback is Black Jack. For reference, Pazaak in Star Wars is also Black Jack. It makes sense that Solas would be good at it, given that while some of it is bluffing the second side is being able to accurately compute totals to twenty-one, to know how many cards are left in the deck from that figure out how many are left thus what you're likely to get. It's about knowing when to stand. It's also a simple game and it's very easy to grasp the mechanics of it quickly. It's a game for card counters who can keep vast amounts of information in their heads. Solas is very intelligent, much more intelligent than Blackwall. I don't see why he wouldn't be able to figure it out quickly and win.
Chess has been overanalyzed to the point where it's pretty much useless as an indicator of, well, anything really. You can use it to show the character has a complex grasp of strategy or that they are intelligent. It's a war game, a game of strategy played against a single opponent. Cullen, for example, is a prime example of a character who would be (and is) good at chess. He's a general, it's in his wheelhouse. Really, it's not being good at chess which tells us anything about a character, it's how they play. How they play reveals information about how they think. The stratagem Solas uses against Iron Bull is one that can only be used once. If he doesn't achieve his objective, he can't use it again because it relies on the other player being unaware of what he's doing and being unable to guess his next move. He sacrifices his pieces in order to create confusion that masks his true objective.
All I'm saying is that it's hard to play the way he plays when the other players are aware of him and thrusting him in the spotlight. The strategy he uses (relying on no one noticing him and underestimating him) is similar to the one Josephine does because it's a common one in poker. I don't think victory there would be as easy as it seems at first glance.
So I played some more with my warrior elven lady and...

This is the epitome of an arrogant grin right there.
"You don't know sh*t, Cassandra."
"Feel the burn, Seeker."
"Look at my grin, look at it!"
"Can you feel it on your skin, burning?"
"Do not even bother to deny my almighty knowledge."
Meanwhile, I imagine my Lavellan to be like "I don't get paid for this crap."

Yes. If you really want to get to know a man, play chess with him. I think there is a reason why there is a legend about Saladin playing chess with Richard Lionheart.
And all this talk of Diamondback makes me think about Hawke's mabari losing to that pack of rat terriers.
It's a shame there was no gift giving quest for Solas. I love the idea of him having something that reminds him of his relationship with Lavellan (and causes him a lot of pain and turmoil!!! What!? He deserves it! Breaking up with my poor Lavellan).
I imagine him on his journey by himself when he adjust his coat and finds a long (or short) Lavellan hair on it. He then picks it off and lets it catch the wind, whispering vhenen.
*cough* Uh, you guys and your fan fiction are a very bad influence on me!
What would your Lavellans give Solas?
I feel like my Lavellan would give him something she made herself--if I want to be really mean to him, a tiny and intricately carved wolf statuette that she slips into the pocket of his robes. He doesn't realize it's there until after he leaves.

Cole: Where once was one heartbeat, now are two. Can I meet the baby?
Lavellan: What?!

I think mine would give him a necklace or something similar that holds sentimental value. I can see him appreciating almost any sort of gift so long as the thought was there, or home-made gift.

Just finished the game with Solas romance. It was an excellent story. Unfortunately I was suffering from having basically no banter so I missed a lot of the really cool background stuff. Oh well. I'm glad to see Cole comments on you and Solas breaking up. It was really odd in my game because there were no conversation options and nobody said anything. Still, awesome character.

I think with my Lavellan's combined love of all things Solas and knowledge-y, she would do some Fade searching of her own. Find a lovely spot to take Solas to at a later date. Explore it together. I can think of nothing better than seeing his face light up at new/old things to be uncovered/recovered, especially with someone sharing his passion. Perhaps the experience would be something more with someone he cared about and cared about him in return. Maybe make some new spirit friends or just leave it the two of them if they wish--or there are none around.
But here we are thinking about this like it is human vs elf vs dwarf culture. Why does it have to be human culture? Why not just the culture of the future? I certainly wouldn't expect the "human" culture of present day Thedas to be the same in another 50 years. People progress, ideas change, and when new cultures are introduced they don't disappear, they mix. That is the better Thedas, in my opinion. You can still feel attached to your heritage and be part of a completely different culture. I would never wish ideas or beliefs subjugated on a people, but what is wrong with your beliefs slowly adapting to new ones? You can also feel like you're part of more than one culture.
Maybe I'm just incredibly biased about this topic, however. My family is extremely mixed and I've always thought of ourselves as progressive because of this. My aunt goes to Korean festivals to celebrate her heritage and I'm planning a trip to Guam with my sister so she can visit her biological mother's country. They are both part of the mainstream American culture (human) while holding close to their roots (dwarf and elf, they both are very short XD).
Sorry I went off a bit with real world connections, although I think Theda's does have a lot of real world parallels.
Fade baby comment.
No pregnancy for me, no thank you. Lol. I can't wrap my head around the fascination with being left as a single parent because your significant other left you. I like my freedom and little parasic-- I mean gifts from God are unwelcome when I'm emotionally scarred from abondedme
To each their own. Hence why I said for those who wanted it.
I see it as a way to make Solas come back, actually. Because you just know all the spirits would be talking about it. Two of their friends having a baby? He would hear about it wherever he is.

Gods, that's a "just locked a whole pantheon of gods somewhere deep" grin if I've ever seen one.

omg imagine Varric parenting Cole to teach him to not reveal pregnancies to women before they find out themselves...
Cole: She seems upset. Angry. What did I do wrong?
Varric: Well kid, for starters, don't reveal intimate things about people without their consent.
Cole: I thought she knew. She didn't know? How could she not know?
Varric: *sighs* I guess I have to have the talk with you then...
I much rather imagine Solas walking the fade, dreaming, and stumbling upon a memory of Lavellan and him, seeing and experiencing everything through her eyes, realizing how much she loved him, how much he hurt her, new pain soaring in his chest where there was only old pain before... (yes. I want him to suffer big time after that whole stunt he pulled)

I think we want him to come back for Lavellan and not for the kid. I don't like pregnancy fanfic for this reason. The "if I get pregnant, he would stay" is probably the worse fantasy a woman can have. The second worse is "maybe I can change him or change for him to make him stay."

I think Cole would genuinely be the first to know. Because with all that craziness that happens before the end of the game. I think Lavellan would be more surprised if her cycle was normal than anything. It's easy to imagine that she could be 1-3 months along post game. Especially in a setting where they don't really have pregnancy tests.
I see this as what happens to my mage Lavellan, Eleri post game. It will never happen in game. But the possibilty makes for an interesting story.
As a side note. I would love to see Varric and Iron Bull give Cole the birds and the bees talk. Hilarity ensues.
And Cole is totally going to be the uncle/big brother.

I'm not saying that he's not coming back for Lavellan. Why does it have to be one or the other?
And no, I don't expect him to stay. But I also can't see him staying away. Things are more complicated than that.
And I don't think anyone wants to change Solas to get him to stay. He has something he needs to do, yes. But he doesn't have to do it alone. And maybe he'll realize it.
