I don't have an issue with older guys either. Thane was my favorite character as well as LI in ME and he was 40 as well... which is appropriate since Solas is giving me some weird (but great) Thane vibes. 

 

Is it odd, or do some of you guys also see the similarities? 

I think it is the facial expression. To me it shows he is calm and concerned in a way but that is all I really want similar between those 2.

Edit: So far Solas seems to have different values such as knowledge whereas Thane just wanted to do as much good as he can before he dies. I can see what you mean though. I just hope that he is more his own character. If like any character I would rather he be like Mordin.

Dorian: (strokes his mustache as if it was about to fall off) On second thought, perhaps it is best to leave such matters to the master.

Solas: I am sorry to hear that.

@Moussey - I mentioned that, a few pages back; similarity to Thane (personality/trait wise). Though I don't think that they are copying a formula. Just a few similarities.

I know we have moved on to a new topic regarding gifts, but I am going to go back to role play style for a moment. I don't do self-inserts. Love acting, so this is a nice substitute. However, to help "immerse" into the role better, I always choose a few things to represent myself, in each PC I create. A touch of my humor, or morality. And/or my tastes and preferences in friends/lovers. Even though I will generally try all (or nearly all) the romances available....eventually, I still gravitate to one or two, more often than not.

Regarding evil play throughs, I too am not able to do that, generally speaking. It mostly has to do with logic. I consider myself lucky, since I have a decent sense of imagination. But, I also have a mind of reason, logic. Between the two of them, this dictates more often than not, what I am able to role play. If a truly evil path, tends to be too far fetched, or illogical to the point of psychotic, then I won't play in that manner. I have done play through against my normal grain, but I still held a modicum of sense when role playing them. An example is my Sad-Sack Hawke (not her actual name ). She eventually loses everyone important to her. But I had to play it "just so", to make it believable. Was strangely entertaining, mind you.

So back to the last question; gifts! When I think on past gifts we have given our fellow companions, some were much more "special" than others. I think they did a great job with the presents for Alistair, Zevran and Leliana. Also was quite fond of the gifts for Fenris. Those four had tributes, that molded into their background quite nicely. I am hoping we get something like that for all our new companions, and it goes without saying, Solas. For the little I know of Solas, I will say something made with Ironbark (to harken back to his encounters with the Dalish; a staff, or small blade). Perhaps an object like Aneirin's token, that Wynne could receive, if you completed her personal quest to find her lost pupil. Considering that the amulet helped with her spirit connection to Faith, something akin to that would seem apropos. Then the simple things; skins to wear and sleep with, perhaps an upgrade to his pack even. LOL!

That is about as serious as I can get at the moment. The last of a trailing holiday, eeks out of my half pickled brain. Nite you crazy elf-paramours. Ciao!

I also get a Thane vibe from Solas for these exact reasons. Seriously though, I'm attracted to a certain type of individual. Thane and Solas aren't twins or anything, but they both have a certain something, a something that is similar enough, that I am attracted to both of them.

I've played male shepard bout as much as I've played female and well my first male shepards romance was Tali and well...I think Tali is cute but it just felt like shepard was dating his sister...there just wasn't any romance vibe between them to me but everybody has a different opinion on that romance. I've had one romance Jack and that one is good it's sad you don't get to see much of her in the 3rd game but with the Citadel DLC it's okay.

I kind of feel like we got jipped in with the Jack romance in ME3. Don't get me wrong, I loved the Kiss and the mission. But, if you're going to give the character's look a big overhaul you think see would have played a bigger part.

Didn't Patrick write the Traynor romance as well? I did that one. I thought it was really cute, if short on content since she wasn't a companion. It had a nice sense of normalcy to it, compared to some of the other ME romances which could be full of tragedy or drama. There is a very sweet line Traynor gives at the goodbye about wanting the house with the white picket fence with Shepard which I liked because it gave a sense of where their relationship could go. It was a bit focused on one aspect of the relationship at times (them sleeping together in the shower was referenced a lot for what little content there was), but I think if there had been more time to develop it, it would have been really fantastic.

That reminds me of Fenris scene, DA2 was my first BW game and I didn't even know about the romances
So when he got all pissed and pushed Hawke against the wall I was like "Oh snap"
And then Hawke just spun him around and they start making out, and I was like "Oh... snap?... Wat o_O"

I agree with that...that's pretty much why I only had my mshep romance her once. I can understand how all the Jack fans were very disappointed with how less of an appearance she had in the 3rd game. I haven't even finished that playthough yet cause It's like what's the point of this romance? Anyhow it's still not too bad at least she didn't get killed off like Thane...................................

Tali was my favourite romance in Mass Effect. I didn't see her like a sister. I think she was just awkward and a little infatuated. I felt like she grew a lot. Although I've seen a lot of people say they think Tali was more like a sister, and I would like to trade sisters with these people because mine are huge pains in the arse.

The description of Solas gives me a bit of a Thane vibe too.  

 

IMO, after Cullen, Solas is the most obvious choice for a LI, my only concern is that they have chosen to not make him a LI because he is so obvious.  I like Cullen so my inquisitors won't have to be lonely if he's not.  I know Varric's popular, I think he's great, but I'm not sure how many players would want to romance him,  I know I don't, I want him get resolution with Bianca.

On another note, I'd hate to have him completely following in Mordin's footsteps with acting and song. Perhaps he makes cool crafty things like... oh iunno, his necklace? Someday we'll know what that's about. Someday. (I personally think it's something to cut tall grass, but that's because that is the only practical use I can attach to it at this time)

As for the gifts, I believe I understood that romances weren't based on gifts anymore, but I'm not really sure if this means that there are not going to be gifts at all or that they won't be used to start a romance anymore.

Don't really see the similarity between Solas and Thane... Except maybe their more philosophical approach to life?  I dunno... I was never a big Thane fan, myself.  He was cool, just didn't do a whole lot for me.  Couldn't romance him, as he looked too... reptilian for me (this, from someone who always romanced the cricket-saurus...

Solas playing the pan-flute, though?  That would be awesome.  Though i love the idea of him drawing, too.  Maybe because I'm an artist and he already reminds me of myself, haha!
