I might be the only one, but I am nearly certain that this is not the last Lavellan has seen of Solas.
If you choose the right option, after the final romance scene, he will promise you that everything will be made clear.
Given who he is, I find it very hard to believe that he makes empty promises, especially if you look at other stories about him.

Thought (I'm on a posting roll tonight): How would you have felt if there hadn't been the big reveal after the credits? If he had broken up, disappeared, and there was no trace? Your inquisitor goes to her room alone, and that's it.

Hmmm, I'm not sure how I would feel. Probably less okay about all of this, because the post-credits scene does provide some answers.

 

I was around before the game was released when all of the rumours about Solas having a sad ending/dying/being tied to Fen'harel were going around. We were getting so much conflicting information (somebody on Neogaf we asked basically sent a PM saying "yeah, Solas is fen'harel and then he kills Flemeth and leaves" but we didn't actually believe him because it sounded completely freaking nuts  ). I...really didn't want it to be true. Because I'd kinda fallen in love with Solas already, and I thought that him being Fen'harel meant that he'd be lying about everything and his gentle persona would be a mask. So I basically said "screw this" got off the internet for a while, and played it myself. And...it turned out to all make sense. Heartbreaking sense, but it worked. And Solas was everything I knew I'd love and more. The lack of resolution pissed me off at first, but I refuse to believe it's just gonna end like that. Because c'mon.

 

Looking through all of the wolf-related/dom stuff, I hope that the fandom doesn't flanderize him into something he isn't just because they're attached to the Fenharel: trickster god idea. I mean, I know that Fen'harel was already popular in the fandom, even as a potential character. I just really want fans to love Solas for himself, and not because it turns out he's Fen'harel. Because he's so much more than that.

For those of you who want to put Solas in medium or heavy armor:

• Silverite for heavy armor
• Snoufleur Skin for medium armor
• Dales Loden Wool for light armor

Those materials remove (most) class restrictions from armors, hence why there are screenshots out there of mages wearing medium or heavy armors. All three of those materials can be found in Emprise du Lion, I believe.

Can I just take a moment to complain about the crafting system? I mean, I like that there's crafting, but so much of it is ambiguous or not obvious, like the above. The fact that they use "masterwork" to describe like 4 completely separate things just drives me nuts. Grrr.

Weekes, you magnificent.  Goddamn.  Bastard.   It is terrible.  It is crushing.  It is perfect.  Not just in context of Solas x Inquisitor, but -potentially- in broader historical context as well.

 

Keeping it simple, the most direct connections are the most obvious:

 

Your faith was strong but you needed proof

You saw her bathing on the roof

Her beauty in the moonlight overthrew you

 

Pretty direct Solavellan reference.   His desperate, abused faith that there is hope for the world- that flawed beings are capable of creating a just, fair, equitable society- that modern elves are capable of regaining the majesty that was lost - is Solas' Big Thing.  He wants, desperately, to believe- and over the course of their relationship Lavellan becomes his proof.   For him, her beauty is not just literal: she is possessed of a unique and beautiful spirit, a curiosity and openness that defines his true People. Again in Cole's terms - she is real, and so everyone could be real.   Real Elvhen, as Solas believes they could and should be.  It changes everything.

And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah

 

Lavellan ties Solas to this world.  Not the fade, not the ancient past.  Her very existence opens an alternate path to his (apparent) original plan to return the world to its state before the veil and the fall of Arlathan.   It changes everything....

....It changes everything, but it cant.  In the end, he's too committed to his path for the ghost of an old hope to turn him from it.  Too bruised perhaps, to risk failing yet again.   His love for her, and what she represents, is a cold and broken Hallelujah.

This makes me all the more glad that I chose to romance Solas for my first playthrough. It's just so beautiful and tragic and filled with emotion and ties so well with the story. And the reveal in the end was just... I don't know, it just has a certain impact when you play Lavellan in a romance with him.

 

It makes me all the more amazed (and perplexed) that Solas' romance was just added during the extended development time. I couldn't imagine playing DA:I without it. (His romance and Cullen's seem to be the most popular from the looks of it. Not bad for characters whose romance arcs were added in the last minute.)

If you haven't seen it yet I did link to another kmeme fic in that other thread that veers away from the dom stuff. I agree with you, though. I don't mind small doses of dom, but it isn't Solas's character and it isn't my kink. I wouldn't say no to fics that emphasized the hahren/da'len stuff, though. >.> Because that is my kink.

Has there been any discussion around here about Solas' likely role in ME, now that we know he's Fen'Harel?  Since it was strongly implied that Felassan's boss was Fen'Harel, and that's who killed him.  DA:I pretty much explained why Fen'Harel would be looking for an eluvian passcode: to unlock that eluvian the other elven gods are stuck behind.  Still surprised that Briala's eluvian network didn't come up again in DA:I, but maybe in the future?

I bet Weekes was just sitting on the Solas romance arc, and jumped on it once they were given another year. I seriously doubt it was crafted, animated, and voiced in a year.

 

Actually scratch that new theory: the year extension was implemented because Weekes mentioned details of the Solas arc to someone important and they decided they had to put it in the game. Cullen too I guess >.>

I think it came up in passing during the Winter Palace mission, but only mentioned as a 'weapon' Briala had in a message from Gaspard to Celene.  Frankly I'd have wished they actually brought it up, even though I still need to read the book cover to cover. Then again, that would have definitely tipped the axis of power for a lot of people.

Ha, yeah. The amount of Lavellans that somehow had a prior kinship or feeling or something for Fen'Harel against everything that their clan and people knew and taught seems to have grown since the game released...   Not judging or anything. It's just funny. That and all the wolf imagery or thinking he'd act like a dog because of it. It sort of removes him from himself, if that makes sense. People make associations that are probably inaccurate because it's what they know, which... come to think of it, isn't unlike what the Dalish have done. Hmm. Interesting.

Heh. Not bashing other people's kinks at all. I just hope it doesn't become...overwhelming. The thing about Solas is that there's so much debate over his actions and motivations. Which is wonderful, don't get me wrong. But the Fen'harel thing seems to make people throw out a whole game's worth of characterization. Like arguing that because he's Fen'harel he has to be evil. Or because he's Fen'harel he has to be crafty and duplicitous.
