Ha, yeah. The amount of Lavellans that somehow had a prior kinship or feeling or something for Fen'Harel against everything that their clan and people knew and taught seems to have grown since the game released...   Not judging or anything. It's just funny. That and all the wolf imagery or thinking he'd act like a dog because of it. It sort of removes him from himself, if that makes sense. People make associations that are probably inaccurate because it's what they know, which... come to think of it, isn't unlike what the Dalish have done. Hmm. Interesting.

Haha I definitely agree with this. I feel like people are projecting who they think Fen'Harel is onto Solas, ignoring that Solas already is Fen'Harel. Solas is a wonderful character as he is, period.

I think it came up in passing during the Winter Palace mission, but only mentioned as a 'weapon' Briala had in a message from Gaspard to Celene.  Frankly I'd have wished they actually brought it up, even though I still need to read the book cover to cover. Then again, that would have definitely tipped the axis of power for a lot of people.

Yeah, I vaguely recall something that felt like a reference, but it didn't come into play.  I thought that an entire eluvian network on Briala's command would be a bigger deal.  Well, not for my Lavellan anyway, she had an attack of consciousness and couldn't stand by and let Celene be assassinated.

Has there been any discussion around here about Solas' likely role in ME, now that we know he's Fen'Harel?  Since it was strongly implied that Felassan's boss was Fen'Harel, and that's who killed him.  DA:I pretty much explained why Fen'Harel would be looking for an eluvian passcode: to unlock that eluvian the other elven gods are stuck behind.  Still surprised that Briala's eluvian network didn't come up again in DA:I, but maybe in the future?

I highly doubt Fen'Harel was the one that killed Felassan. For a couple of reasons. First, it seems out of character for Solas to kill someone for disobeying him in the particular way that Felassan disobeyed his boss (in that Felassan was protecting a friend). Second, why couldn't Solas go ask Briala himself? Or make her give him the passcode? He's not a completely inept manipulator. I'm not sure exactly where TME is in relation to the timeline, but I think Solas was probably awake for it (it wasn't that long ago). He could have had Felassan introduce him to Briala and build the relationship from there. Not to mention Solas doesn't have any reaction towards Briala if you bring him along to Halamshiral. It doesn't seem like he knows who she is. If he knew she had the eluvian network, why wouldn't he try to influence the Inquisitor into getting into her good graces? Why wouldn't he advise against killing her (since her death would mean that no one could access the network)? Why wouldn't Solas try to get the Inquisitor to get access to the eluvians through Imshael? There are just too many instances where Solas didn't do something for me to think he even knows about the network.

 

I think it was either Mythal, or one of the creators trapped in the fade (My bet is Falon'Din is involved. I'll keep saying it until I'm proven otherwise). I also think the network will come up in DLC, since it was pretty useless in the book (only comes up at the end, and Briala hasn't figured out what it's going to be for). There's too much potential there for them to just leave. Annnd Weekes is the writer, so I bet it ties into whatever is going on with the elfy stuff.

And, I get it, the whole "is a trickster god" is a sexy idea. But I hope fandom doesn't run away with itself here. Gotta remember that this is Solas we're talking about. The guy who will nerd about the Fade forever if given just a bit of prodding. And who is so kind to Cole. And who teases Sera about introducing her to spirits after she fills his bed with lizards. He's not a Loki-style trickster at all.

Heh. Not bashing other people's kinks at all. I just hope it doesn't become...overwhelming. The thing about Solas is that there's so much debate over his actions and motivations. Which is wonderful, don't get me wrong. But the Fen'harel thing seems to make people throw out a whole game's worth of characterization. Like arguing that because he's Fen'harel he has to be evil. Or because he's Fen'harel he has to be crafty and duplicitous.

I don't see how people can come away from this game and continue to think he's evil unless they just didn't have him in their party at all or completely ignored the lore. I don't even think he's in the morally gray area, though his actions and motivations might lean towards gray. It's as simple as this: I think he's a good person. He approves of feeding the hungry, returning lost items to people, disapproves of violence for violence's sake and glorifying violence, thinks the people of Crestwood deserve better, feels empathy for the peasants who will have to do harvesty-stuff even after being hurt by the war, thinks slavery is objectively wrong...

Agreed entirely. Though I do think there's room for that sort of behavior from him in the past and that it could have been something he grew out of as a result of the destruction of everything he knew and loved, I really don't like it when people take a character and blend them into something they aren't simply because that's what they want them to be. I've had to stop reading a few prompts because it didn't feel like they were writing Solas any more.

I've also got money down on Falon'Din. Given the ominous overview we get at the end of Inquisition, it sounds like he could end up being the next big bad. We know he has a temper, and we know there's a very high likelihood that he hates Fen'Harel.

 

Then there's also the fact that there really isn't a reason to hide the identity of the killer if it was Fen'Harel. The Inquisitor doesn't know Felessan. We can't exactly accuse him or not accuse him. We didn't know Solas was Fen'Harel until the end of the game, so it wouldn't exactly have been a spoiler.

 

My world won't be shattered or anything if Solas killed Felessan, it just seems like that's not what happened.

Am I the only one who would love to see Solas scampering around trying to catch all those lizards?  There's no way he'd shoo them out in the cold to die.

Right? Looking at threads here and elsewhere makes me headdesk. Just listing things about him shows how ridiculous the idea is. Yes, fear your new trickster overlord! Cower in terror as he frees slaves and feeds the hungry!

Thought (I'm on a posting roll tonight): How would you have felt if there hadn't been the big reveal after the credits? If he had broken up, disappeared, and there was no trace? Your inquisitor goes to her room alone, and that's it.

My first playthrough was as Trevelyan (no, I don't know why either!) and even with her, at the end I felt empty through the party and final balcony scene. Just couldn't feel celebratory. I needed that cut scene to rest my mind. Kinda.

My Lavellan is in all kinds of pieces and I feel awful for her as I know something she doesn't. So that's the down side to the final scene.

I'm playing through a Cullen romance right now but I can only do it in spurts. Then I reload one of my handy saves to watch a Solas cutscene with Lavellan again.

 

I was going to play a Human female to romance Cullen but then I thought no go with a male cause you'll just be yelling "Why won't you take me Solas?!!!!!" every time you talk to him with your female human.

I'd love to see a comic of him chasing out all the lizards out of his bed. Course I now have this image of showing up in his room and theres a random cage of well fed lizards and some kind of heater keeping them warm.

Other than a few smuts, I haven't seen an abundance of fanfic that poor trays Solas out of character dominant.  Not a particularly large amount of sweet fluffy stuff, but I'd say for the most part it's in character.

He was more of a trickster in the stories. We don't really know how many or correct, but I would at least think that the ones Felassan tells Briala in TME are somewhat accurate. In those, he's pretty morally ambivalent (the "slow arrow" story is pretty grim). And there are moments where he's not all nobility and gentleness (the mages, the rebellion talks with Sera, etc). I do think he's generally a good person now, but there does seem to be an implication that that might not always have been true. Or that he might have another side we haven't seen. I think the people who portray him more in line with the "trickster" archetype (though I don't know that is really how they're portraying him but another time) are trying to reconcile the Fen'Harel myths with gentle Solas. Or....that's just their kink. Maybe I'm giving too much credit.

It would have spoiled the current ambiguity of Solas' character if we knew Fen'Harel killed Felassan. I guess he can kill the mages, but that's a little different IMO. I think regardless they want to keep the good guy/bad guy tension with Solas' character, and leaving Felassan's killer as a mystery lets them do that.

 

I hope it wasn't him though. I don't like thinking of Solas as being that ruthless back then. Now I feel like he might get that way because he doesn't have options, but he wasn't as desperate before. And I feel like it's a bit weird to kill someone who is seemingly one of the People through and through.

Psh, hardly. I was having great fun reading stuff people had written about him right after his reveal. There was a lot of "he seems really boring", and "I just can't get past the bald", and "Omg he looks like Nicolas Cage and Nosferatu had a baby". Though GDL being announced as his VA gave him a fair boost in popularity. But compared to before, his tumblr presence now is insane. I think it's hilarious.

Agreed. It's so weird when I see "Solas is EVIL" or "I want to kill Solas" threads, because I'm just like... did we play the same game?

 

There's no way Solas was "faking" all that being a nice guy stuff. If he truly wanted to be evil, why would he have not just joined Cory from the start, or been a straight up antagonist? Going "undercover" and joining the Inquisition, just to disappear at the end, makes no sense if that were the case.

 

Solas/Fen'harel is truly a good and caring person. That doesn't mean he's right about everything, but he's a damn sight better than most.
