Psh, hardly. I was having great fun reading stuff people had written about him right after his reveal. There was a lot of "he seems really boring", and "I just can't get past the bald", and "Omg he looks like Nicolas Cage and Nosferatu had a baby". Though GDL being announced as his VA gave him a fair boost in popularity. But compared to before, his tumblr presence now is insane. I think it's hilarious.

Yeah I remember these days,I also remember shouting at random twitch comments that Solas would play a major role in the plot.Nothing is simple about Bioware's characters,and even with his apostate hobo appearance,Solas had "something"that screamed it's more complicated than that!

I highly doubt Fen'Harel was the one that killed Felassan. For a couple of reasons. First, it seems out of character for Solas to kill someone for disobeying him in the particular way that Felassan disobeyed his boss (in that Felassan was protecting a friend). Second, why couldn't Solas go ask Briala himself? Or make her give him the passcode? He's not a completely inept manipulator. I'm not sure exactly where TME is in relation to the timeline, but I think Solas was probably awake for it (it wasn't that long ago). He could have had Felassan introduce him to Briala and build the relationship from there. Not to mention Solas doesn't have any reaction towards Briala if you bring him along to Halamshiral. It doesn't seem like he knows who she is. If he knew she had the eluvian network, why wouldn't he try to influence the Inquisitor into getting into her good graces? Why wouldn't he advise against killing her (since her death would mean that no one could access the network)? Why wouldn't Solas try to get the Inquisitor to get access to the eluvians through Imshael? There are just too many instances where Solas didn't do something for me to think he even knows about the network.

 

I think it was either Mythal, or one of the creators trapped in the fade (My bet is Falon'Din is involved. I'll keep saying it until I'm proven otherwise). I also think the network will come up in DLC, since it was pretty useless in the book (only comes up at the end, and Briala hasn't figured out what it's going to be for). There's too much potential there for them to just leave. Annnd Weekes is the writer, so I bet it ties into whatever is going on with the elfy stuff.

I like the kinder and gentler Fen'Harel as much as anyone, maybe more, but I think Solas is, well, more complicated than that.  That's pretty much his theme.  Remember when he was described as scotch bonnet candy?  I saw that when he was willing to kill a bunch of mages for the crimes of being desperate and stupid.  Do you think he wouldn't be willing to kill someone who he saw as a traitor to his people, and their chances at a future?  The story of killing the adults to save the children is essentially a summary of what he did to the elven empire.  It just didn't turn out the way he hoped.

Felassan was full of Fen'Harel stories, going as far as to compare Briala to him.  Which he said Fen'Harel wouldn't necessarily approve of (Briala isn't his people,remember?).  And his last words to the figure who killed him in the Fade was "she reminds me of"...likely the last word was "you".  Felassan eventually sided with the idea of allowing modern elves to find their own way without any intervention from the ancients or gods.  We know that Solas still doesn't agree with that idea.  

As for why Solas doesn't approach Briala, who knows, maybe he doesn't want her involved with his plans.  Maybe he doesn't want to risk anyone other than himself going where the elven gods are: we still don't know what's going to happen when/if that goes down.  He also doesn't necessarily know what she looks like, he never met her himself.  But more likely they probably didn't want to bother with any reaction between Solas and Briala in the game because they weren't doing anything with the eluvians in the plot.  And Solas can't get the passcode through Imshael, because the passcode has already been set by Briala.

I'm not trying to make Solas look like the bad guy here, I just see him as a complex person.

Yeah, you can talk to her at a certain point, but I'm not good at navigating the Winter Palace stuff either.  Missed a lot of stuff my first time through there...

Was mostly kidding. You're right, he exploded on tumblr after that particular reveal which sort of cracks me up as well. Our little nerd is getting so popular. *dabs eyes with tissue*

I was always interested in Solas as a character and he sounded as if he'd be the type of person I'd want in my party. But I wouldn't say I was sold on him as a romance, before I met him.

For me, it wasn't the big reveal or his secret past that made him attractive. It was the first half an hour of the game. His VA, his pensiveness, thoughtful intelligence, gentle respect for my Inquisitor.

Now, nobody else stands a chance.

BTW, when I write him in fic I write the character we got to know, not who I think the Dread Wolf is. Because that's who he is. He may have lied by omission to the Inquisitor, but I don't believe he put on an act about who he was. We saw the real Solas, even if we didn't appreciate what that meant.

I was able to talk to Briala after the mess in the servants quarters area...after I tried three times. I finally managed to get her back together with Celene...which I feel guilty about, all things, considered, but if they didn't really want to they wouldn't have! ...right? Besides, Briala's position was officially elevated, so I have no regrets.

 

...if Celene and Briala could reconcile after everything then Solas and Lavellan should be able to do so as well. Yep.

Depends on your definition of good reason, I thought the bit with the mages was more passion than reason.  I think that's one of his more interesting qualities, the way he can be very reasonable and gentle, but when he's passionate about something, you start to see where the "Fen" in his name came from.  Given the nature of his mistakes, it's also clear where he doesn't really think things through as much as he should where his passions are involved.  I just realized, that depending on what actually happened in the DA:I epilogue, it would be the second time a story has ended with him killing off a character.

 

And there's another thing I haven't seen, I thought I saw all Bull's stuff outside the romance...unless that's part of it.

Considering after Wicked Hearts and Wicked Eyes, when discussing with Solas about Briala he says he doesn't identify with a specific people, just because of their pointed ears. Just because he's an elf he has nothing in common with them. Now please do not misunderstand what I am saying, if this is the case, when why is female Elf Inquisitor the only romance option for him? If he doesn't identify specifically with elves, wouldn't he then accept others as well?

 

Second thing, in Cole's companion quest, he says Cole has to forgive his killer. Though Solas himself wanted to kill the mages who summoned and tortured his friend. Really now Solas? Where's your preachiness about harmony and stuff now? Explanations.

And, I get it, the whole "is a trickster god" is a sexy idea. But I hope fandom doesn't run away with itself here. Gotta remember that this is Solas we're talking about. The guy who will nerd about the Fade forever if given just a bit of prodding. And who is so kind to Cole. And who teases Sera about introducing her to spirits after she fills his bed with lizards. He's not a Loki-style trickster at all.

I've been looking up some of the Dread Wolf stories and they just don't seem to describe the Solas in Inquisition at all.

 

Merrill from DA2 tells one that says: 'But then the Dread Wolf came, for the Keeper was wise and kind—the things Fen’Harel hates above all else.' He hates kindness and wisdom above all else? Really? Those are qualities Solas prizes highly as evidenced by his side quest with the spirit of wisdom and praising the Inquisitor for doing kind actions.

 

When they had the reveal about Flemeth, I found myself saying, well of *course* she is. But Solas being the Bringer of Nightmares? Just.. no way. I know people change over time and stories get twisted in the re-telling. But some of these tales don't seem to be just off, they seem to be completely *opposite* of his personality. The Dread Wolf cared not for the people, but Solas is willing to walk some path he wouldn't wish on his enemy because the people need him?

 

And I know Solas wants to kill the mages who corrupted his spirit friend, but after a full playthrough I realized something. If Solas cared about the spirit of wisdom as much as my Inquisitor has come to care about Cole... I mean, can you imagine some mages summoning Cole, forcing him to cause suffering or something that would twist him into a demon, and then him dying afterward? I'd want my Inquis to kill those mages herself. Ugh! I might let Solas kill them in my second playthrough.

I agree that he's complicated, that's why I don't think he was the one to do it. It's a little bit of an exaggeration to say he was willing to kill mages for the crime of being "desperate and stupid." He wanted to kill them because they tortured and were responsible for the death of one of his dead friends. Then instead of being ashamed they tried to deflect blame for their mistake. Plus that is a heat-of-the-moment situation where he's lost his cool.

Whoever killed Felassan sought him out. Also just conveniently happened to be in the Fade at exact right time. It wasn't a snap decision, it was made by someone with clear knowledge of what was going on and a plan for how to manipulate those events. I also find the part about "no debate, no logical argument or impassioned plea" to be a bit OOC for Fen'Harel/Solas since he's often all about seeing the grey areas.

 

I think Felassan is bound (like Abelas) to someone. He admires Fen'Harel because he exists outside of the system, and that's why he is so knowledgeable and tells so many stories of him. Felassan can't directly oppose whoever he is serving, but admires the one who can/did. I actually think it's just as likely he was going to say "I suspect you'll hate this but she reminds me of Fen'Harel". Why would someone who is not Fen'Harel hate that? Because he's probably the one that put them in whatever situation they're in. "You know who this girl I helped reminds me of? That guy who took all of your power and locked you away in eternal slumber. Great guy amiright? Totally support more people like him." And Solas actually seems to like Briala. He calls her "admirable" and seems glad that she's going to look after "the elves".

Felassan refers to Briala by name when talking to mystery-figure, so even if Solas doesn't know her face, he'd know who she is once he's at the party. And he doesn't need to involve her in his plans, he just needs to get the passcode. Sure she's good at the Game and at ferreting out deception, but she's also desperate and needs the Inquisition's help. What better time to gain her trust, and either get the passcode or open the relationship to do so in the future? It seems like lazy writing not to address that -- there's plenty of foreshadowing in the game and it would only take one or two lines of Solas expressing interest in allying with her to establish that relationship. As for Imshael, he was the one that gave both Briala and the other elf woman (Mahariel? Mehriel? I don't know) the means to get through the eluvians. He could undoubtedly do so again.

 

I dunno, I just don't see it. If he did kill him he was very, very, sloppy in the follow-through. It makes much more sense to me if it was someone else.

 

I never thought of the slow arrow story as being an allegory for whatever Solas did but that's a brilliant connection. Someone should tweet Weekes and ask if it was intentional >.>

On the Cole issue, Solas wasn't really preaching forgiveness for forgiveness's sake. Cole is a spirit of compassion, and Solas wanted him to forgive that man so that he remained true to his nature, pure.

 

The elf issue is a little more complicated.

My conclusion on this is that because of Solas's personal issues where he doesn't see the present day elves as his people - but he probably should - forming a deeper connection with one of them has more weight in his story. He's also racist and had minimal experience with other races prior to waking up, so it may also be an issue of familiarity.

 

Cole is a spirit, Solas is not. He says that explicitly. That you can't expect a person to forgive but a spirit can.
