From a non-romance stand-point I want him so badly to be right. He's been wrong the entire time we've known him, big-picture wise xD. The path he's on now seems so contrary to everything that I think would be a reasonable, rational plan. But if they can write it so he turns out to be correct, in a way that's believable? That would be amazing. I don't want him to be the character that's always wrong
I think it would be nice if he was right, regardless of how many people he hurts along the way, that the world would be better if he dropped the Veil and let the other Elven gods loose. I think my issue is that the wants to put the world back to the way it was before and that, at least, can never happen. For one thing, the gods he put behind that mirror/locked in the black city/whatever it was he did with them, aren't really going to be the same ones he remembers. They've been asleep, sure, but they've been slumbering alone in darkness. We don't know how it's affected them. From what he said about Falon'din, that's the kind of guy I wouldn't want any of my favorite characters from DA to meet. (Though I wouldn't mind if Falon'din became the next DA villain, so long as they actually explain him this time around.)
Mythal seemed to want them loose so she could destroy them, to have her reckoning, and get her vengeance. Solas... I don't really know what he wants other than he doesn't see the life of the elves now as any better than it was under the rule of his people. I know we've talked about it in this thread before, but he's essentially just exchanging one kind of slavery for another. It's just he prefers his version and I think it's because he's given up on the hope that things can get better. He's also probably planning on dying by the other gods hands when they get out. They didn't exactly sound... forgiving.
Whatever comes next, it will never be what it was even if when he drops the Veil the elves regain their immortality and all the magic comes back per Sandal's prophecy. The humans aren't primitives living in hovels selling necklaces of bone any longer, the dwarves cut off from what they once were have dwindled, the darkspawn are still around and probably aren't going anywhere, and neither the Dalish nor the City Elves are just going to bend knee when they realize exactly what these old gods want.
But that's enough doom and gloom! Time for happy Solas pictures!
