So many times I feel when somebody is mocking or chiding him, he is thinking and chuckling inside "You have no idea who you are talking to buddy"

hehehe I get a kick out of it too!

You can tell Leliana that he never even said goodbye - that's it.

Spoiler

I know what happens after the end and who Solas really is. I'm on my second playthrough and am romancing Solas so I was wondering if I will be left alone without a prior goodbye. Sad news, really. Now I'm tempted to ditch Solas and go to Cullen, don't think i could handle the heartbreak.

Depending where you are in your romance with Solas, there are only two(?) times in which you can end the romance. If you've already surpassed the first, the second won't come until after the Temple of Mythal.

The amount of times I snicker at a stray statement or passing remark is too damn high I tell you!

It almost makes me wish Merrill was a party member just for her constant "By the Dread Wolf!"  Or if that was an occasional Lavellan battle cry.  I can just imagine the long-suffering sigh that would follow from Solas as he hears his beloved quizzy use his moniker as a slur.  Hehehehehehehe

Just curious but does anyone know if there are any fanfics yet where the orb doesn't get destroyed in the end? Where Solas goes through with whatever his original plan was?  I'd love to read some fan theories on what he would have said/done once he got his hands on it. Run away? Reveal himself?

I know I'm late to the party but bless all y'all for acknowledging the whole "super sexay Fen'Harel eclipses Solas's actual character in fic" thing. It seems like people are focusing on what they want Fen'Harel to be (Loki) and not on who he actually is -- an almost pacifistic lonely ancient bald Fade nerd who keeps screwing up the world trying to make it better. And I'm not even talking about smut, because obviously people's kinks are gonna take precedence there and I'm not gonna claim to know a damn thing about his, um, bedside manner (I'll leave that to Weekes). But... just... gen fic or fluff or whatever where he's unrecognizable ehh.

Don't get me wrong - I would never bash anybody's fic, and there's plenty I enjoy reading even if they seem a little OOC to me (looking at you, kink meme). I would just like the Solas tag on AO3 to, ya know... actually have Solas in it.

I think it bothers me because it's happening so SOON. We've just started getting fic of him and he's already not himself lmao. Usually it takes a few years!

My likes seem to be broken, so I'll say this: I agree so much with this.  I love Solas.  Way back in the day when all we had was one screenshot and people thought he might be Dorian, Solas was the character that intrigued me the most due to his interesting face (I was genuinely upset when the first thing I found on the brand new forum was posts bashing Solas for his looks).  My rambley point is this: Solas was the character I was most interested in and when I finally got the game he's the character I loved the most because of who he is, not who Fen'Harel is.

There's a part of me that wants Solas to be to Fen'Harel what Flemeth is to Mythal, that same part of me wants that vessel (Solas) to be the one who fell in love with Lavellan, and that same part of me wants The Dread Wolf to release his vessel (SAFELY!) allowing them both their happy ending....no idea what would happen to Fen'Harel but someone needs to write that ****!

It's on page 1326/7ish (since that's where I'm reading at the moment).

I feel very... strongly about fanfiction.  I love it and I love seeing what fans do with canon, but I do believe that canon should always be respected.  It's no good writing fanfic if all you're going to do is twist the characters.  As interesting as I find Loki (in Norse mythology, the MCU and Marvel comics), I find Solas more interesting than just being Loki 2.0.  That short thing I wrote, probably about 50 pages ago now, was my Lavellan expressing my own views on Trickster gods.  The thing about Solas is you can see what makes him a Trickster but you also see that he's far more complicated than that.  He's got the intelligence and cunning of a trickster, but he cares for the People more than Dalish myths think he does.

I have a bit of a different take re: last night Solas discussion.

I think we don't really know what Solas/Fen'harel is like, not really.

We know what Solas was like around us. We know the stories of Fen'harel and what he was like.

But either one of those could technically be wrong.

Now before I'm strung up let me be clear I highly doubt this is the case, but Solas could have been lying to everyone about everything. Everything. He could have faked or lied about everything he said, everything he thought. Solas could easily be one of those people who you think is a really good person and turns out they keep bodies in their basement.

We have only seen like two seconds of the real Solas as himself and I don't have enough to go on with that.

I think, personally, that he is more complicated than "good" or "evil". I don't think he lied about his general personality but I also don't think he's all sweet gentle puppies and sunshine.

But I think that really all can be left up to how the player imagines it to be, which is great

That's the whole charm of it,Solas is Fen'harel and he's nothing like the Dalish legends present him.
Not a trickster, although he's undoubtedly Cunning and witty.
Not a traitor but a wise, intelligent individual who probably rebelled to a system that was cruel to its subjects, because he wanted to improve things for them and the rest of the world.Heck even for the rest of the creators who would probably slaughter each other mercilessly,if it meant they got more power.
This why the revelation made him even more interesting to me,although I already took an interest in him before the game launched, and afterwards that interest turned into appreciation through the discussions he has with the inquisitor.
He's the type of character that makes you rethink, either when it comes to your inquisitors views about the setting or your own.

You can have all my likes!

Tricksters really capture the imagination I think.

Of course, Solas doesn't really fit the Trickster archetype the Dalish ascribe to him. He might have once, but until we get more information on his past it's impossible to know. I really need more fics where Solas is Solas. I'm not even sure we know enough about Arlathan to know what their culture was like beyond what he and Abelas say, which... isn't much to be honest. There's the lore entries, but they're mostly conjecture. I get the sense he was much wilder when he was younger, maybe more like Dorian. I personally like the Solas we have.

Perhaps,I do think that he was more hot blooded and a bit wild when younger.Maybe Dorian reminds him a bit of his young self an rather privileged individual ,being a magister and all, that wishes to change his homeland for the better and loves it as much as he hates it. :P

I'm inclined to believe what we saw in game wasn't everything there is to Solas. But I don't think it was faked either, those are real, prominent parts of his personality. This is for two reasons, I believe he's a better character if he isn't the typical Trickster figure and because I can't imagine spending an entire game on fake character development.

I agree that he isn't all sweetness and light. I believe he's a good person but far, far less than a paragon of purity.

As he said to Lavellan herself "You saw more than most." - why would he lie about that when it does absolutely nothing for him? There's no reason to tell her that, other than to explain as vague as possible that he never lied about his feelings for her. I don't doubt that Solas has quite the history and secrets older than centuries, but I don't think that he flat out lied about everything. Why should he? It would only make it more difficult to keep up his false identity.

Ugh, why am I out of likes? I agree with both of you. :D

I am inclined to say that the Fen'harel we saw in game is closer to the real one. He even admits we saw more of him than most. However, passing bits of banter do indicate that he was much wilder in his youth, more prone to taking chances, and, apparently, more proud. He thought he knew everything there was to know. Whether that's in regards to what he learned before the rebellion or what he learned during or after he woke up again, it's hard to say. We do know he indicates he was once much quicker to take chances than the "cautious" man he is now. He's sly, if not cunning, and if Blackwall is any indication he enjoys playfully humiliating his opponents. He also comments that he'd like to see a mage Lavellan's will dominated. There's some strong passionate center underneath that cool exterior. So much of what we see from him in regards to the romance is restraint, which I think he reflects his conflicted dual nature and as struggles to find the balance between Wisdom and Pride.

His vocal cadence is also difficult to hit when writing his dialogue which I know has been hard for me. He also has a very sly sense of humor beneath that polite exterior, verbally speaking he likes to level out before the sucker punch. Almost as if he doesn't want us to realize he's just made a joke until it's already passed us by. He's very open with his affections and he gives into them quickly, but there's a lot left open to the imagination.

I like it, but it's hard to point at any one facet of his personality and say "that's Fen'harel!" I do think that the majority of the personality he presents is his real one, he probably figures myth has him so mixed up that no one would ever be able to figure it out anyway.
