He's not super thrilled about KE because reasons, but you can explain and he'll chill out. He says nothing about Rift Mage. Necromancer sparks a conversation, I think but I could be wrong.
He has dialogue for every specialization. They just don't always fire right. Rift Mage is his preference because it's his specialty.
I think another issue is that he just has less content than the other characters (and his last quest is freaking bugged). I wonder if they gave him fewer scenes and dialogue to prevent people from guessing the ending. Regardless, that strategy doesn't work when players don't get invested enough to care about what happens to Solas. I think they should have added more content to make people more attached to Solas, but just greater care in not giving us too many hints.
I'm not sure who was responsible for his party banter and such (is it all Weekes?) but they did an amazing job at crafting interactions that flowed naturally and easily as HedgeMage!Solas, but came back to punch you squarely in the gut after the Reveal.
All his advice to Sera about the Red Jennies. His weary soldier camaraderie with Blackwall. Conversations with the Inquisitor about the nature of benevolent social organizations. His anti-Warden rant. Naturally, everything and anything that had to do with the collapse of the elven empire. I have to wonder whether people who consider his character "boring" simply escape-spammed through all his dialogue.
Y'know, I just want to say that while I may not be very active in discussions that come up here, I really do enjoy reading them. The atmosphere of this thread is very chill and welcoming (I maintain that it's the mutual sorrow) and something I really like is that people here actually take the time to read and consider the views and opinions that're expressed. I think there's a lot to be learned from both people who love and dislike a character, but it's only made possible if people're willing to think and give reasons why rather than "I don't like it."
Solas, I find, is a very complex character with a lot of subtlety to him. It's only if you see the complexity and subtext there that you can really appreciate it; he's not a character with a loud personality to draw you in. I imagine the stinger at the end will prompt people to pay more attention in subsequent playthroughs, though.

If I had to guess, I would say they probably didn't have him in the party very much, so they would have missed it all anyways.

Well, see, that's what I thought! So I was very disappointed when I got nothing. I really don't want to have to do another playthrough once/if these issues are resolved, but I suppose I may...
Does anyone know what he says re: Rift Mage? Maybe I can just pretend I've heard it.

Maybe they were hoping the stinger would carry enough weight to make up for the lack of content. I think people care about what happens next in his story now even if they don't care about the character.
BTW what an awful thread that one. The OP was so closed up and intolerant. He was Viv and Meredith in one, with a pinch of Loghain and none of their redeeming qualities. I'm glad I missed it

All the writers write banter for their own characters. So Weekes wrote the entirety of all Solas & Cole and Solas & Bull conversations. Solas & Vivienne would be Weekes and Kirby.
_Lucinia is probably right about people not having him in their party. You just miss out on so much of who he is by leaving him behind.

True, but the ending is more emotionally impactful if you had some sort of feeling for the character whether it is strong hate or strong love. I still think it's a bit strange how Cullen and other characters get so much more content when Solas is a lot more important to the plot.

Hey I'm divided about Sera. I really like her mischievious side and love how she questions authority and dogma. She and Solas have a lot more in common than either would admit.
But some of her writing turns me cold for her, with the offensiveness of it, so I pretend it's not in the game and then I have more fun with her. She isn't perfect by any means but she can make Lavellan laugh after having her heart ripped out so she is a BFF.
I enjoyed how Sera was (at least from the perspective of my Inquisitor) alternately obnoxious and chummy; it was fun to see them go back and forth between yelling at each other about elvish history and playing pranks/roofwalking together.

I'm guessing that with the reveal out of the way, Solas will be getting more content in some form. The others probably had to have the majority of their stories told during DAI.
Bah, I knew it had to be some glitch that only Bull commented when I took a specialization. I wonder if it would fire if I went back to a save before then and tried speaking to people?
At least I'll always remember the cauterized nipples...
I was left with the impression we got so little of Solas because too many questions/conversations would lead to too many suspicions, opportunities for more questions, and it may have resulted in fewer people being surprised by the stinger. There were so many times when my character would've wanted to call him out on his fishiness (much like you could with Blackwall.) In any case, I kind of hope that wasn't the case, because that's a bit of a cop out... so I'll carry on convincing myself it was a matter of time/budget. I respect PW and all he's done with his characters.
Aren't those mountains being carried on their back byt a pair of red tailed wolves, one on each side ? United on skyhold, bringing the Inquisition flag standard to Thedas ?
I used to post in here all the time up until a few months before the game came out, then I stopped reading at all to avoid spoilers. This is my first time visiting since then and after browsing a bit just wanted to say hello and hopefully catch up someday This thread was always amazing and I'm looking forward to diving back in! *looks at 600 new pages* I'll... just... get started on the FAQ
So, hi again! Oh, and for reference I'm the type of player who couldn't bring herself to ever leave Solas out of the party. Ever

He has essentially the same dialogue about all three with flavor differences (like Sera). It may have been, and may still be, bugged but most companions should comment on specialization. He'll approve of all three if you play an elf, I think, and pick the right dialogue options. I don't think he's fond of KE humans and possibly qunari.
From memory, he was pretty cheery about my human KE.
Ah, Solas. Just finished my first play through at just over 170 hours. WOW. Not unexpected but my Lavellan rogue is still sad, she was enough of a student of Elvhen lore to see the writing on the wall though (even is she wasn't quite sure where he fit in she knew he was no simple hedge mage). And that bit after the credits - OH MY. Now I can't wait to see what happens next (probably tragedy for my Lavellan though).

I think he says something kind of grumpy about the Chantry? Maybe it changes based on approval. I know a human KE can pick the right option and he's cheerful enough about it.
Someone recommended this amazing thread to me from reddit, and I'm so glad I checked it out. I wanted to make my own little contribution:
I wanted to bring up Leonard Cohen. Why? I read Bioware's blog post on the 12th about the music the writers listened to while writing and k.d. lang's "Hallelujah" was brought up as something that was listened to on repeat while writing Solas' dialogue, and it influencing him speaking in a metered tone.
Leonard Cohen wrote (and still performs) "Hallelujah". He's an incredible songwriter and I'm not at all surprised that his melancholy, romantic, verbally rich lyrics influenced Solas' dialogue. I could hear it in some of the opening dialogue. Leonard Cohen took years to finish "Hallelujah", he's known to take months and years and multiple versions to consider a song "finished". He's in his 80s, he still tours, and still writes songs and poetry. Many, many, many people have covered his songs, you've probably heard some of Cohen's work and never even known it.
His poetry is amazing, his songs are amazing. I felt like I should try to make sure that, although k.d. lang does a great cover, people knew who wrote those words and put them to music and influenced such a great character.
