Doesn't Solas say in Nightmare-land that Fear is one of the oldest spirits, second only to Desire? I also got the impression that Solas didn't necessarily view demons as universally bad..? Maybe that's just me. Sometimes it's good to be afraid, or to want something, or to have grief. Just not all the time in such a way that it overwhelms everything else.

If you're willing to buy into the theory that "spirits-as-we-know-them were created when the veil went up and elves were ripped in half" theory - which I'm not sold on, honestly - then then it's still plausible.  That would have been the beginning of the corruption, the rebellious song.  Not surprising that the spirits were dark at that point, as they would be reflecting new, mortal aspects: desire, fear, hunger, etc.

@Ispan

I think Cole is talking about Solas' feelings on Lavellan there.  Especially since Cole doesn't always become more human, but he always says that. :)

I don't think it matters whether or not you make Cole more human. The fact still stands that he was able to come over from the Veil and retain a body without possessing anyone or becoming corrupted. It could still work.

On the topic of body-posessing, I'm actually a bit scared that it was indeed Solas spirit and body that Flemeth took instead of the other way around mostly because

Spoiler

About three souls. The beginning, it looks like she sent a soul or soul fragment through the mirror before Solas comes along.  Wish I had the photos, but in the video Solas gets this determined sinister look and the next is Flemeth with a look of pain.  Plus the whole "I should be punished but the People need me." I'm firmly of, Solas stole her powers because he lost his to Cory/Quizzy.

I'm not entirely following....Why wouldn't Fear and Desire exist before the Veil? Solas made it sound like they were still around just different?

I was thinking more along the lines of evolution. When the elves are running around without fire or sewing, they're motivated by fear of things that could kill them and the desire to eat and exist/procreate. Not exactly that because we don't know how The Beginning started, but I don't think it was just BAM CIVILIZATION. Or maybe it was. *shrug*

Maybe, but that doesn't explain how there's still ancient immortal elves, or why Mythal has to keep jumping bodies to "live"
But it could work if it's just that those born after don't have it apart of themselves, but the ancients do.

Solas says something about it not being magic but apart of their being.

Flemythal is definitely a decent counter-argument, though it's worth pointing out that she had the unfortunate luck to claw her way back into a human host. The human race, of course, was never immortal, and could have been created (more crackpot theory) lacking some inherent mojo that makes it possible.

I still don't think it was referring to Cole.  It doesn't really fit the context.

I thought we were talking that a Spirit/(human/elf) would be the cause of immortality.  Which having her being combined and still having to body jump kinda downs that theory in my mind.  XD  Lol. Did I lose it somewhere?

Neither do I. I was just pointing out that Cole had already done something miraculous; he didn't need to be made more human or spirit-like to be relevant in the conversation.

I like to play Devil's Advocate every now and then. (:

My friend pointed out that Rivaini seers willingly accept possession by spirits to help them guide their villages, so it's plausible that a magically-advanced ancient elven society had done the same.  So the spirits were immortal before the Veil and continued their 'immortality' in the physical world by being accepted into new willing hosts when their bodies expired.

Solas talks about how he should be the one who pays the price and apologizes to Flemeth, Flemeth apologizes to him and collapses. There's a lot of ways to interpret the scene but I'm 90% sure that Solas mentioning the price means that Flemeth is the one who collapses and pays for it instead.

Re: Cole banter

I think the change from "her" to "you" is because Cole goes from talking only to Solas to responding to the Inquisitor. Video for reference:

Spoiler

Before the Inquisitor interjects, Cole uses "you" to refer to Solas in "but then you turned away". Quizzie joins the conversation with "perhaps Cole can get a better answer from you than I did," and it seems like from then on Cole is addressing Quizzie and no longer talking about her in the third-person. I do think Cole factors into Solas' feelings, but not this particular banter.

That is an interesting piece of banter. I'm trying to wrap my head around what the idea of "real" means. I guess what you can determine is that people lived in a certain state before the gods/spirits/whatever were sealed away and he is going to put it back. Perhaps its not that the gods need to rule, but that they took something with them when they left.Seems like something big is in the making.

They're still immortal, or at least very very long live.  Even the spirit friend of Solas' dies and is being reborn later.  But there's the Old Ones? I dont' think that's the name, but they're very old original spirit/demons that you apparently encounter sometimes.  Which all highly suggest that they are still immortal. The Veil didn't change that. It would change elves sure because that's an outside influence. But that wouldn't change spirits/demons.

They're still immortal, or at least very very long live.  Geez, even the spirit friend of Solas' dies and is being reborn later.  But there's the Old Ones? I mean that the physical embodiments of the gods would seem immortal by possessing multiple hosts, not the spirits themselves.  The spirits themselves are immortal but they might need a different way to appear immortal to the residents of the unchanging and immutable world of men.  It was just poorly said, sorry :)

Edit: My head is starting to hurt from coming up with crack-brained theories, haha >.<

Also, I just finished watching "Exodus: Gods and Kings" with the hubby and friends and I have a line I would like to share. It went something like:

"Loving all I know about you. Trusting all I do not yet know."

Just made me think that this is how my Lavellan would feel for Solas. <3

I kind of lost myself, honestly  Solas, or some part of him, could be a spirit in my mind.  There were some signs and changes he went through in the game that I thought fit the idea but I start to confuse myself when I think about it too much so it might be time for me to just ogle some fan art ^_^

I get the feeling it's more or less short for "real elvhen".  Considering the ancient elves and Solas don't seem to consider modern elves as true elves.  Hence all of Solas' "my people" confliction.  I think he sees Lavellan as an exception, making her "real" elvhen, and that makes him doubt himself.  If she's real, then all the other elves he's written off as lost causes could be real as well.  It could change everything, because maybe that means he doesn't have to go through with whatever he's planning.  But he isn't willing to back out of his plans.
