I will suggest swapping out Solas sometimes too though, Dorian is perfect and has great comments. I enjoy necromancer too.

Wait...you mean I could conceivably run with my best buds of Dorian, Solas and Cole/Varric? *Falls over* Mage it is then. :-)

I ran around once with Viv, Dorian and Solas. It was like the Fourth of July. I did it in the fallow more because dead people are easy to kill.

I'm disappointed in rift Mage, wish I would have tried something else. Maybe I'm just not playing it the right way.

As for my Mage it depends on the fight. Hard ones? Two warriors two mages (like dragons) and for running around I swap in a rogue depending on what banter I want .

But I ran with three mages (myself, Solas, Dorian) and iron bull and it was amazing.

I really like the Rift Mage. That class is the controller class.  You can move all of the enemies around and do massive aoe damage.  The only problem is that to properly use it you need to spend a lot of skills and you have to respec after getting it.  I always run with another mage, usually Solas, so he can drop barriers, because I don't take that skill.

Focus on aoe burst damage.  There are a bunch of trees that have them and runes are nice for traps, then slap a Pull of Abyss down.  I don't believe there is a limit for how many enemies you can suck into that thing and it's super OP.  The only defensive skill I take is Fade Step.  So I zip around the battlefield flinging dudes everywhere and pulling them off of my squishy party members, Solas and Sera, and applying weakness to everyone.  Honestly, that is my favorite class and kind of makes me feel like a God.  However, it is very tactic oriented and I can see how it would not be for everyone.

OT: I feel like it was never really made clear why Solas only likes elves. It was either Mike Laidlaw or Mark Darrah that said it will make super story sense, however no where in the game does it explicitly state why Solas only likes dating elves. The thing is is that he can still like and respect you if you are another race and doesn't seem intrinsically racist, but you don't even have the option to flirt with him as a non-elf. All the other characters have flirt options, including ones that are not available to you. Basically it is assumed by most players that finished the game that he only likes elves because he wants the elves to rise to power once more. I don't want to just assume that just yet, because I really want to see what happened in his past and what his plans for the future is (even if that means waiting 3-4 years for DA4).

The romance being so restricted comes to 2 things for me:

1) Solas is a man-on-a-mission. He's got a plan and wont be sidetracked. So restricting the romance options for him shows that. At  Haven, Solas tells about dealing with spirit and demons that 'a beautiful fruit is not deliberatly tempting you to eat it'. I think that illustrates well enough how proficient he is at not falling for someone. The Lavellan romance really found the tiniest gap in his armor. Its the one mistake he did not expect.

2) Since he isnt interested in dating, I feel its his connection to Lavellan that keeps him linked to her. Being an elf for sure means something: not because he doesnt care about other races, but because he specifically cares about elves (and I mean that he has a stake in it, not that he likes the modern elves). Making it a female romance rather then a male romance might just be how the character is wired up. Could have been the reverse.

I'm hopeful that the romance will continue on in a DLC. It seems plausible that since the Inquisitor has the anchor that she is likely the key to helping Solas unlock the eluvian without the orb now. So I'm hoping that will some how bring them back together.

Go go eternal optimism!

Yessss

I thought about it too, that is such a grand way to continue this with relative ease.

I'm hopeful too, because if I won't I would be very sad instead :|

I think the race restriction is ICly a matter of trust, and from a meta story perspective, it makes literally no sense for a human, dwarf or Qunari to be involved with an elven god. You see it most clearly in the discussion on the mountain over the orb. That conversation goes down a lot differently with an elf than it did with my human PC.

Personally I'm so glad they gated it. It makes the romance feel more authentic and, for lack of a less trite word, special. Alistair x elf mage is my canon DAO game, Fenris x f!Hawke mage my canon DA2 game, so personally I'm burnt out on the cross cultural romance thing. Elves are doing it for themselves a bit in this one. I hope we eventually get a dwarf romance like that, too.

Edit: I also come back around to something not many people talk about, but the parallels between Solavellan and the Maker/ Andraste. The similarities are tenuous but they're there.

A little bit of a strange question but I stopped playing my Warrior elfy because a) warriors are kinda boring and b ) she just looks completely ridiculous swinging about a greatsword that's easily the height and weight of her. Especially with her twiggy arms. Too, too unbelievable even in a world of magic, rifts and glowy hands.

So for you mage elfies, how do you play? What's your companion set up? Obviously Solas needs to be in the group at all times, but how do you roll with 2 squishy mages? Is there a good set up that includes Cole too? (Because I need to issue out hugs to him at all times.) I'm a bit out of my depth because I almost always go for two dagger rogue but that meant on previous playthroughs that I missed out on lots of Cole and Sera banter.

Put the difficulty down and take whoever you want. You sometimes miss out on rogue or warrior specific stuff like locked doors, bashing, etc. Mages aren't really squishy in this one except if they get backed into a corner, in which case you can Fade Step out, or there's a spell in the lightning tree that paralyzes anyone who attacks you, which is also quite useful.

Personally I usually take Blackwall or Cassandra + Solas + Cole, Sera or Dorian. The tank pulls threat, the mages do crowd control and dispel, and rogue is there for high DPS especially on single targets. Iron Bull works better with my rogue's setup. Vivienne sits home, she's my Wynne in this game I guess. Just not useful enough to me to take regularly. I brought her along a few times to listen to her needle Solas and Cole.

I'm happy to go with him just liking Elven women because that's what he's attracted to. Just as easy as I can accept that Cullen doesn't get all hot and bothered over Dwarves and Viv has bugger all interest in any of you. Doesn't mean that he can't connect to them on a deep level, I think his non romance friendship is incredibly deep and personal too, but it just never sets those lovely little alarm bells off in his head and...other places. By which I mean his ears. Obviously.

So how do you have yours spec'd? Maybe I'm not doing it right? I'm really focusing on fire but I think maybe I should have spec'd out into more aoe? I use fadestep only from winter and the main lightning one- the rest are from fire and spirit.

OH.  I like that- nice catch with the fruit reference there.  From his perspective, Lavellan is certainly the unwittingly tempting lure in a trap that he has fallen into (possibly many times) before.  Not the romance directly, but what it implies: hope.  A reason to take action to change the now.

The path he was on before DA:I begins, and the one he seems to be sticking with at the end, is a rejection of his original act of Pride.  It is completely inverted: abject humility, an insistence that he cannot fix what is, and thus the only path open is to step aside and allow others to shape the future (if releasing the old gods is his goal) or "undo" his original mistake by returning the world to its original state (dropping the veil).

erk.  and now I really do have to catch my flight.  GRATS ON 1500 PAGES IN ADVANCE!

I think it's perfectly fine to have specific attractions, we do, as real people.

Solas' background is probably what makes him attracted to elven women, it's like Dorian only likes males and Sera only females (btw, so awesome we don't have only straights and bisexuals).

It's part of the character's depths, they have their preferences.

Solas can be good friend of the inquisitor no matter the species, he is no racist/speciesist.

I think it added a great deal to the romance, even if I don't enjoy roleplaying an elf as much as a dwarf.

(By the way, what pissed me about being a dwarf and romancing Blackwall is that they made her taller in the romance scenes so they could kiss, like, her feet weren't even on the ground. Don't be so lazy BioWare! Make him lean moarrrrr. One of the reasons that I didn't feel Blackwalls' romance as much as Solas)

So how do you have yours spec'd? Maybe I'm not doing it right?

I filled out the Rift Mage completely and I took most of the Storm tree.  There are a lot of passives that help with cooldowns and mana in that tree which is really important, because you want to be able to throw PoA around all the time.  I also filled out the Fire tree to get the rune, but I could have gone with the Frost instead and it might have been a better idea.  Then Fade Step.

Weakness is important.  It seems really lame, because they don't explain it really well, but it's awesome.  With it you can cripple all of the enemies, because very few mobs, including bosses, have resistance to it.  You make all of your party members hit harder and you lessen the damage the mobs do.  And I think every Rift Mage tree attack applies Weakness.

I can't remember my exact specs and I'm constantly playing around with it.  But focus on AoE and PoA.  Also that Fade Fist thing, I can't remember the name, is amazing.

All of that being said, I'm not thrilled with the special gold attack.  Firestorm, really?  How does that make sense for Rift Mage?  I have god-like powers and the best my mark can do is fire?  Pshh.

In my experience, fire has the least crowd control capability and is more of a damage dealer. You do get panicked enemies and I think it's useful together with Necromancer to incapacitate people. My mage is a lightning mage primarily, and I take a few in the fire tree just to get Clean Burn. Static Cage is too much fun, especially upgraded.

I always take the first three on the left side of the spirit tree. Barrier, Peaceful Aura and Dispel. IMO they're just mandatory mage skills to keep threat off you, to have a 2nd Barrier for when Solas is out of mana, and Dispel to make short work of rifts.

For Lavellan I think I've decided to get KE just for the passives. I don't like the KE gameplay, but dem passives... I think you can do a lot in this game with a straight elemental mage.

Plus the whole bit where a lot of elves-- Dalish in particular, are often uninterested in non-elves for the simple idea of preventing their race from being bred out/dying. As one of the few elves from old times he'd probably have a heightened interest in this, perhaps even adopting Lavellan as one of "his people".

I didn't really figure out what spec to use for my Knight-Enchanter until I started playing the Arcane Warrior in multiplayer.  There are several ways to play him, but once I got into my groove I figure the next time with single player will be a breeze.

EDIT:  Personally, I like using Chain Lightning then Fade Step then lightsabering things to death, using Fade Cloak when I start taking damage.  I love zipping around the room using the upgraded Fade Step as sort of a mild CC.

Rift mage here, too. I love that RM gets a spell that is basically Singularity from Mass Effect. Makes me feel like a space wizard again.

I specced myself for crowd control as well, with a rotating crew of 1 tank and 1 rogue. Solas was my barrier babysitter (he's a lot better at barrier-ing than I), though I did take some spirit tree stuff because just having barrier is very useful. Also upgraded fade step. Fade step freezing a line of enemies then turning around and giving the last one a f*ck you stonefist is the best.

Same same. I feel (for) you.

Either that he thinks he doesn't deserve happiness or that he thinks the path he has to walk would be too hard/dangerous/painful for Lavellan/Cole/his friends, as he says something like he wouldn't wish this on his enemies. And in a way it pisses me off. He is with this great woman, who sealed a frickin Breach with a gesture, who survived political and religious turmoil, who has this wisdom and great soul he hasn't seen in so long, and yet he doesn't trust her enough to confide in her? Not even tell her what his path is and let her make the decision for herself? Boy that man got trust issues.

Maybe considering the end credits
