It occurs to me some people might not have finished a Mahariel game in DAO? Tamlen x f!Mahariel was the OG of tragic elven romances. I happened to blunder into the Tamlen mini-romance in the Dalish origin (which was easy to miss), then later when.... I stared at the screen for five minutes. I think it's the most emotional that I ever got in DAO, mostly because I'd already played through before so it was totally unexpected. I also think that's when I started loving the Dalish, especially after a Dalish mage mod came out.
Just a tip if you're into Solavellan and haven't finished a Mahariel game in Origins.
I'm slowly working my way through the stages of Solas-induced grief. I'm firmly in the "anger" stage right now where I just wanna deck Solas for all of our poor Lavellans. Or whack him with the "DON'T" sign.
And then maybe give him a hug and some ice cream, but only if he figures his s*** out.
Really, because we're also squeeing it's hard to realize how terribly cruel that scene is. She thinks he's taking her somewhere for a special experience, when what he really does is expose her ignorance (something she knows is a big negative for him), then offer to take something from her that's deeply personal and a sign of both her coming of age and of her identification with her family and people. After he's left her about as vulnerable as she could be, he dumps her with no explanation. It's no accident, I'm sure, that Cole's banter about it always has Lavellan thinking that there was some fault in her that led it to happen. I don't think Solas meant any of it to be cruel, in fact when looked at another way it's all signs of his deep caring for her, but that just shows he's freaking clueless about how he affects people.
