Found this link from the Abelas thread: apparently if you drink from the Well, you get some extra Codex entries that clarify the ancient elven writing.

http://yaranyarai.tu...e-to-drink-from

I have to say, the descriptions in Elgar'nan and Andruil's entries definitely ping some Lovecraftian vibes for me.  Especially Elgar'nan.  "Shifting, shadowy mass with blazing eyes, whose form may be one or many?"  *shudders*

Also, who are those who cast Mythal down?  Abelas says that the humans had nothing to do with the fall of Arlathan, and Fen'Harel didn't murder her.  Other elves?  It seems unlikely that it would be other members of the elven pantheon; maybe it was some sort of external threat.

Ugh, these clues.  Those writers.  My head hurts.

Ohhhhhh!

I'm really sad about how much of the game I'm missing by not being able to read the text - it's way too small on my TV. Normally I don't care, but it seems to be adding so many layers to DA:I. Thank you to everyone who is posting letters, codex entries, etc. online!!!

Yes...thank you to everyone who is posting the codex entries. The font is way too small for me to read as well. :-(

I think it probably just fell, like the way most empires in history do. Internal conflict, social strife, corruption, economic decline, over extending itself in conflicts/wars with other nations, etc.

That last one seems to be written by Abelas, right?

Does he die in playthroughs where you go against the Sentinel elves? Or does he always live? If he always lives, I could see tracking him down as being part of the same storyline where Solas returns, or else him even being a companion in DA4...

IMO Lavellan's actual age is a bit of a moot point when Solas has a few thousand extra years on her   The tone of the romance is more dependent on Lavellan's experience and maturity than her age.

True. But it still doesn't bother me..the age difference.  :) ;)

Morrigan stabs him while he is taking in the power of the Well in order to destroy it.  Take that as you will.   :)

When you chose the companion to take with you on quests, does Solas´s card change like the others? Even though Solas really respected my Inq, his card never changed. Same with Cassandras.

Solas's card can change after the final romance scene. If you're not romancing him, it will only change after the end of the game, once he's no longer available.

I haven't done the Cassandra romance but I believe hers also will only change if romanced. Possibly also if she's made Divine post game?

Gosh, Morrigan is so silly sometimes. (that's me being polite) I don't think I'll get to see it myself, since I can't play anything but an elf and I'll always ally with the sentinels...

If Witch Hunt taught me anything, Morrigan + Stabbing does not equal death.

So one line in Abelas's Well of Sorrows codex entry just caught my attention:

"Without the wise to lead them, they will lose what they should have been."

This sounds rather like what Solas says about Sera being the furthest from what she should have been, no more an elf than he is a horse.  Maybe Abelas is talking here about the gods?  Perhaps the gods were vicious and vengeful, but the elves relied heavily on them as leaders.  It sounds like this codex about his name was written after Mythal died, and perhaps even after the gods disappeared or were sealed away.  He also talks about how the younger elves "do not understand the keenness of what we have lost."

He might be talking about just Mythal, but he could also be talking about the gods in general.  Maybe the elven immortality and affinity for magic is somehow bound up in their gods, and without them, the elves lost a lot of their power.

I think it probably just fell, like the way most empires in history do. Internal conflict, social strife, corruption, economic decline, over extending itself in conflicts/wars with other nations, etc.

Arlathan, yes.  Mythal...Abelas specifically mentions preparing for those who cast her down.  That to me says some sort of deliberate, concerted effort to kill her.  Though curiously, Abelas never describes her as dead in the Codex.  She "rests," and she's not in her "fullness" as she once was, but he never seems to think she's really gone.

I found her sort of detached whimsy at the end to be in character for how I played Lavellan. I think basically, the gift that Solas most wanted to give her was her freedom. That's what he failed to truly give the elves in his own time. That may not be what she wanted at first, but was really what she needed. She's powerful and is going to become a target now, so she needs that strength to be her own person. So I like to think, she misses him, and is a bit frightened because she relied on him so much, but in that moment she is happy as she's standing there in the last scene on the balcony. It's that moment when you realize you don't need your teacher/mentor anymore and start to make your own way. So I like the idea Solas succeeded this time in helping someone he cared about for a change, whether he realized it or not. I picked the stoic option in the breakup scene, because I liked the double meaning behind the "everyone makes mistakes" line. I figure she doesn't know the whole truth but still understands on some level.

Wow, this is great. I never thought about it like that, but I really love your approach.

Even the "forget about the kiss" dialogue during his balcony scene cut me up so bad I had to reload.  Solas could weaponize that sadface.  But I'm also a tremendous softie  :P

Oh by the way, did anyone else try to jump from the third floor (Leliana's) and land on Solas?

No?

Just me?

Huh...

I have not seen that one. I also have been curious about the first scene where you can kiss him or do the other option.

Yeah he takes it really well but he definitely looks sad when he walks back, another reason for me thinking that he didn´t plan on breaking up with Lavellan when he brought her there.

Aha, I just found this video:

If you break up with him after the first kiss, he says "Thank you. I appreciate it. And I will always remember a surprising moment stolen in a dream."

On one hand, that last part makes me melt. On the other than....that first part makes me want to punch him in the face a little.

I agree. I see a lot parallels with Hawke and Anders/Justice in DA2 here. How Hawke gets blamed for it all and becomes a symbol of the mage rebellion and/or traitor, though he was trying his best to protect/defend. He became infamous. Maybe something like that happened to Solas back then? Like a civil war or slave uprising. Then he left or fell asleep, and there wasn't anything left to replace the old system after the gods were gone. No one wise to lead them, and they didn't really understand freedom so they lost it. It is like what happens to the mage rebels, how they sell out to a magister. Fiona wasn't really the leader they needed.

It's weird his card updates so late in the game. It should change to the romance card after the balcony kiss IMO as you're tied into the romance at that point until after the Temple potentially.

Seems like a waste of a beautiful card as I do the temple/final battle back to back.
