Solas has not come up yet but for those who have Twitter, we should make lots of noise when they asked who romanced Solas.

So I've been thinking...

 

Where do you think Solas' originates from?

He said he hailed from a small village, but said village is discovered to be century old ruins.

So I thought of two main options for this:

 

1. Solas' has indeed came from said village and he is under the same circumstances as Flemeth - either he found Fen'Harel in the fade or he was found himself in a desperate situation and called Fen'Harel. Now this seems a very unlikely answer. First thing first, for him to have found Fen'Harel in the fade would've meant Fen'Harel locked himself in with the other gods or something of that sort, so let's say Fen'Harel came to him. Now that we've settled that, we need to rethink the way we approach how he acts and who he is. Unlike Flemeth - Solas acts as if HE is Fen'Harel. Speaks of mistakes done by a young elf, seems to take it really personally when Morrigan tries to understand why Fen'Harel's statue is at the Temple... It doesn't seem like Solas is a host (unless he is a very passive host who is really connected Fen'Harel's spirit). So if we continue with this theory it means Fen'Harel took over the body of an elf. This seems wrong, Flemeth said that "A soul is not forced upon the unwilling", which means that the elf Solas was before just accepted losing his body? If so it must mean Fen'Harel must jump bodies, since, even though the village is centuries old, the elves of the time were not longer immortal, centuries =/= thousands of years. So if that's true it'll also must mean Solas didn't know the village was ruined, and that's why he said he hailed from there.

 

2. Solas was always Fen'Harel, there was never a 'mortal' Solas. He saw the village in his travels to the fade, or in one of his physical travels a long time ago and decided to use it as his background story. He didn't know, however, that the village was ruined.

 

3. Solas was always Fen'Harel + several accumulating centuries = thousands of years, in an assumption Leilana just guesstimated badly.

 

4. Solas was always Fen'Harel + the village was itself really old and was ruined some centuries after Solas' departure. He just wasn't aware of it. 

 

I lean towards 2 & 4.

Since my theory about the elven pantheon is that they were just regular elves who joined with one or more spirits (not demons, but spirits) to gain enormous amounts of power, I'm going to say I lean towards mostly option #4. I think Solas has always been

Fen'Harel (though not always a "god"),

and he was born in and grew up in the village he claimed he was from. It's nothing but ruins now because he's many centuries old, and while he hasn't crumbled, his village has. He'd have to be aware that it would be nothing but ruins by then, though. He most likely didn't think anyone would actually go looking for it, or even feel the need to go looking for it, because

That's exactly what happens. If the Inquisitor ask if they're her servant after she "releases" them she laughs at them thinking they're a servant and then says she has no commands for them, not yet. So the Inquisitor can't actually be released from Flemythal's control entirely, just in that one instance.

Yes you get the same responses, and he seems to be over the Mythal thing by then, though maybe it would come up later. Importantly, what I've discovered is that not everyone realizes that if you ask Flemythal to release you from the geas, she does.
 

 

You're right. I had no idea. In my prior playthrough as a human mage who also had the geas, I must have missed that somehow. Interesting...

 

I'll have to pay better attention when Chesha gets to that point. If she gets to that point. Even though the game sent her back to Skyhold, in my mind she's still standing all by her lonesome where Solas walked away from her. It's also raining.

 

 

She'll defeat Corphi-shite eventually, I swear. Just need. Some time. :C

You guys have probably discussed this already, but I have missed it, so if anybody has any thoughts on the topic of shapeshift / true forms...

I am kinda intrigued by the whole idea that Solas / Fen'Harel could tranform into a giant wolf, and that maaaybe, just maybe, that his name "Dread Wolf" isn't just a title, or name given to him because of his actions or that the imagery of him being a wolf hasn't just developed by itself over the centuries of wrong interpretations and translations.
In relation to this, I find it curious that Flemeth can transform into a dragon, and it is the only form we ever see her take besides her human form. Morrigan claims in DA:O that she changed in to large bird to rescue the Warden and Alistair, but we only have her word and didn't see the form Flemeth assumed to rescue them. What if the dragon is one of her forms, or even her true form? Because Mythal and the other elven gods were spirits or something else entirely, something that has long since been forgotten after they had been sealed away?
I'm just kinda curious to hear your opinions on one of Solas' forms being that of a giant wolf, or if you think that he is "only" elven, and the name and title had  been warped and misinterpreted over the centuries to give him this image of a wolf?

Ok so... my Chesha just got her itty bitty heart broken into a million pieces. I knew it was coming but dios mio. Dem feels. I had to put the game down and just sit a while with a sad, sad face. Not sure I'll be able to do another playthrough. I think I need the help of a support group now. This thread is where to find it, right?

If so, I have a question, and a niggling, nagging thing about all this that I just can't wrap my mind around. I dunno if any of these things have been addressed. 1400 pages of posts is a little much to skim over for results. Please forgive me if I am redundant, and for what is going to be a very, very long post.

First the question. Can we post spoilers here? Hmmm... Just in case:

My Lavellan drank from the well and got the lecture. Due to his faulty dialogue in the temple, it really wouldn't make any sense for her to do otherwise. Even though she felt obligated as Dalish, if he had actually truly begged her not to, she would have listened.Thus my whole experience was based on her being bound to Mythal and my question is this: Does any of the dialogue change during his final scene for a non mythal-bound lavellan. I am most especially interested in his response to the "I believe in us" dialogue path when Solas is letting us go?

I replayed that scene a half dozen times going through all the options to decide which best fit my Chesha's reaction. I am curious if a non bound Lavellan also gets the (paraphrasing): "No, you can't help me. You'll see." response. If so, then I wonder what he means. He also says something like "if we are alive when all this is over, I promise everything will be clear to you" when you approach him in Skyhold with certain dialogue choices. I don't understand this. I've beaten the game before, (not this playthrough yet). What, if anything, gets revealed to our inquisitors? Solas simply leaves after the battle, with only Leliana's note that he's run off and isn't who he appears to be. She still doesn't know who he really is, or what he was actually trying to do.

I suppose he was going off the hope that the orb would be recovered intact and he'd right away do whatever he was planning to with it. But when that wasn't possible.... he just leaves Lavellan with a broken promise that she'd understand? Blat.

And the thing that has caught in my head, and my mind is worrying at it like a rat. It is somewhat related to the above.

He said he had no choice. When Cole taps into his noggin and asks why he walked away from her, Solas's only said, "I had no choice."

It strikes me as very odd. Especially with the timing of his departure. Mid-kiss he stops and the fleeting expression on his face is something like a sad puppy being denied the only thing he wanted in the world. Most seem to believe this was a moment of epiphany and that makes a lot of sense, I am ok with that, even if I think whatever epiphany that could have been feels like typical fantasy soap.

Don't get me wrong. That stuff is like crack to me. His epiphany, if that is what it was, was likely related one of the following, no? "I am immortal, she is mortal. I can't deal with her dying on me. If only she were my people.. in another world I could love her without fear " or "She'll know who I am once I have that orb. She will hate me for it. I will be the legendary villain from her Dalish children stories. Better she hate me already and get it over with." I'll happily toy with the thought of endgame/DLC/DA4 Chesha chasing him down to prove how wrong he is. (O pretty please, give us this option, powers that be.)

But what if it wasn't an epiphany that twisted his face in sorrow? What if it was a sudden complusion. "I can't do this." Or more like something in his mind telling him with great conviction, "You can't do this."

He tells Cole, "I had no choice." Based on all we know, when has he ever failed to understand choice and consequence? That just seems like an uncharacteristic answer from someone so wise. My mind can't leave it alone. Am I crazy?

Don't answer that.

What if, like Mythal-bound Lavellan, he is also bound. The way he passionately argues at any inquisitor who drinks from the well speaks of possible experience to me. Fen'harel, but bound by the will of another. Likely also to Mythal. Just because he is peer to these powerful, ancient beings, doesn't make him immune to their handiwork. Could all of this be traced back to a loyal dog dancing on his master's leash? He thinks locking the ancients away was his own idea and it probably did resonate with his feelings of ancient elven society, but what if it was actually a compulsion from the murdered and vengeful spirit of Mythal. He tells Mythal-bound Lavellan that she will mistake Mythal's will for her own, and do things at her bidding without even knowing it. Is it because he's been dealing with the same thing for who knows how long, and has learned to recognize it?

Free to follow his own heart, until he isn't. If this is the case, he knows his predicament. "It would be kinder in the end."

It may also explain why Cole says Lavellan changes everything. But also can't. She changes Fen'harel's mind about modern elves. She changed his heart and the world outside the Fade is not lonely anymore. She changed even the Fade for him, when they met in a dream. But she can't break the geas. She can't change what he is compelled to do.

If that is the case, I sure hope our Lavellan get the chance to prove that wrong too, and break Mythal's hold over him (and herself should it exist). A hold that is likely infinitely stronger now that the spirit of Mythal possibly resides in his body.

I hope someone can help me get my mind around this or has had a similar line of thought, I'd love to hear it. Is there some way to prove my theory wrong so that I can lean on the other and maintain my sanity a little bit while we wait for what's to come? Even In that regard I'm more than a little concerned, based on past experience with these and other titles. For example:

Romancing Anders and leaving him alive, reduces him to barely a footnote as Hawke awkwardly explains where he is.

Romancing Kaiden in ME1 and staying faithful in 2 because Bioware told us it would be worth it, only to have to rekindle the whole thing in ME3 while someone who was unfaithful was cursed to... exactly the same thing.

With all the different options and outcomes this game appears to offer for the future of Thedas, is there really any hope for our Levellan? I may be alone, but I don't want closure. I want Chesha to pursue her happily ever after with the big bad wolf, dammit. That's why I can work with an open ending like the one we have for now. If closure for us ends up being an obscure Lavellan codex entry in DA4, however, or witnessing events unfold through non-Lavellan eyes with Solas at the center, I'll be grumpy about it.

But what else can they do? The dev work to make a DA4 a game where every DA3 choice really and truly effected the events of cinematic importance would be mind boggling. I think being the Star Crossed Lover of Dragon Age's own Loki is that important, but it is one singular path among dozens they will need to account for in the next game So, what hope can we have? Any promises from the powers that be to ease my troubled little heart?

I apologize again for all the rambling as I try to get this sorted in my head. I'll be grateful for any thoughts on it all.

I think there's a lot of evidence for Solas having independent agency, but I'm a lot less certain that it's absolute than I was. Must chew this over.

 Yes, he did and he lived for a freaking long time.  I think it's also important to note that he went a little crazy too.  Like his initial decision to bind himself to the spirit of the forest, brilliant btw given how connected he was to the forest as Dalish, was not really insane.  I mean it was bit over the top maybe, but wasn't his daughter raped by the shemlen and then the whole town was like "psh she's just an elf"?  I understand his anger and I understand the response.  He cursed them in classic righteous anger fashion.  However, when the Warden meets him Zathrian had become a bit unstable.  Which makes me wonder if whatever affected the ancient elves and made the gods go crazy was affecting him on a lesser level.  Because his spell made him immortal, but that was like an aftereffect it was not the reason for the spell. 

 

Just like Solas said.  It wasn't really a spell it was just a state of being. 

 

So if on a minor level Zathrian tied himself to immortality with enslaving the werewolves, which was what they were.  I wonder if the elven gods tied themselves to immortality on a similar level with their slaves.  Btw I don't mean making them werewolves. 

 

Anyway Zathrian was bonkers and so were the elvhen gods.  Thoughts?

 

Well, if we go by this, then the ancient elves would have had to tie themselves to something "other" which involved making a spirit "real".  The spirit Zathrian bound still does have its dual nature, Witherfang and The Lady.

 

What if the Forbidden Ones are actually the dark side of the elven Creators' dual nature?  And the darkspawn/taint/somethingelsethat'sgoneawry is what they bound themselves to?
