If those dev notes were from way back when the game was in development (if they are genuine), then it is possible that the storyline of the game has also evolved over time... after all Solas and Cullen were not even originally supposed to be romanceable in game.

If they had changed the intent of that scene after those dev notes were written, it's like they would have updated the dev notes, or there would be a second dev note that stated the new intent. Just in my experience.

But that doesn't seem like the type of moment that would change much during the course of game development. If anything, other parts of the game evolved to better support the epilogue.

Anyone need a Solavellan fic rec? My friend wrote a drabble (altho it kinda turned into a short story by how long it ended up lol). I really loved it because it has both fluff (i'm particularly fond of the scene she wrote for them in the study/fresco room) and nsfw stuff at the end and there's some pretty prose delving into Solas' thoughts. I highly recommend!

It's on ao3 here :)

Oh hey, that's my fic! Glad I caught this, I was going to post it in the thread today if anyone wanted to read it but you beat me to it lol thanks minxie. This thread moves really quickly, whoops.

I enjoyed that, thanks!

>.<

That was an awesome share.....

Thank you! I wanted to play around with Solas' POV and the idea that he would eventually feel compelled to share one last moment with her before whatever is coming. That, and, I'm really intrigued by how Lavellan would inevitably begin to question a lot of the Dalish history given all the reveals at the Temple of Mythal (especially if she drank the well, and is able to read all of the codexes) There's a line Solas has, if you're on low approval with him where he says: "The power is yours...until Mythal chooses otherwise."

A lot of people have expressed hesitation about drinking the well because they think, given the events of the epilogue, it will give Solas potential control of any Lavellan that has drank from the well - but this line here implies to me that this servitude is something that can easily be removed. So, if there is any power that Solas receives from absorbing Mythal's soul over her "servants" I'm pretty sure Solas would just release the Inquisitor. That's something I made sure to stress in that fic as well. I highly doubt Solas would want to impede on the autonomy of Lavellan, it really goes against everything his character stands for.

Ooh, thanks for bringing that up! I think a lot of us have mostly done high approval playthroughs, so hearing about the bits and pieces we missed can be illuminating :)

That sounds like a pretty plausible resolution for the "servitude to Mythal" plot.

Or it's like coming out of an abusive relationship and three years later truly seeing the man for what he is -- trust me, it's like waking up from a long dream and you don't know what was real and what wasn't.

I'm not sure they're going with these feels or not, but in my mind it's still a possibility.

Not that I'm happy about that.   :(

Spoiler

Yes if he shows complete disregard for everyone and everything I will consider him truly lost, regardless of whether or not he looks like a kicked puppy while doing it. But I'm still holding out hope that whatever he is doing won't kill Quizzie & co, and isn't even likely to do so. I think if one or all of the Inquisition get in the way he could justify killing them, but not as casual bystanders. Because if he were willing to do that then I think he'd use them and instead he distances himself from them.

Basically, hoping that his goals aren't so far out there that they are objectively wrong on every level, and that it doesn't take ridiculous mental gymnastics to see his side of things.

I don't think his goals are morally wrong.  Either they align with what Flemeth is up to, or she believes that what he is doing is actually good.  Much as people have gone on about how evil Flemeth must be, I have yet to see it.  She's repeatedly been helpful during the course of the games she's in.  Perhaps that was simply because her goals and those of our characters' were in alignment, but either way it doesn't make her look like a terrible person.  And so, if he and Flemeth share an ultimate goal of what they are going to do, I don't think his actions lean toward "evil."

The problem is how much of his humanity he may be willing to sacrifice to achieve those goals.  If you want to keep your optimism alive, well... remember that his final tarot card only changes if you romanced him.  Lavellan gets the cute fluffy white wolf.

Maybe. Not so sure that he wasn't using the Inquisition - think of all the information he now has on them. It did get him to the orb. It did take care of Corypheus. Even the warden decision, perhaps he favored banishing them because it would make things easier for him in the long run. He may well have had genuine feelings for Lavellan... but the romance also conveniently makes it harder for her to get in his way. We just don't know.

He was using them insofar as he needed them to achieve their shared goals: stop Corypheus, seal the rift. What I'm saying is that after all that is said and done, I think he could easily manipulate the Inquisition into doing something else that would benefit him. We're talking about an organization with a lot of power, led by someone that is potentially in love with him. He has respect as a member, and access to resources that he can't dream of accessing traveling solo. He could even have left that door open by saying "hey I have stuff to do, see ya later" in case he ever needed to access all of that later but instead he cuts the Inquisition out of his life entirely.

As far as the Wardens go, I think he has a genuine dislike for what they are doing regarding the Blight and the archdemons. To him, Blight magic is inherently Wrong and yet the Wardens use it without even really understanding what it does, to kill things that they also do not understand, to stop a phenomenon they probably don't even know the true origins of. We know how much Solas dislikes people being wrong, and there's a lot of wrong in Grey Warden land.

That's what I wonder as well: how far down the rabbit hole is he willing to dive? He doesn't seem to mind taking on personal cost, or even eliminating people that "deserve" it, but he also seems to want to help and protect the "innocent". Is he willing to give that up, and if so, doesn't that make his goals moot? Or is he just going to twist himself to the point where he manages to "justify" every death he causes? Gross. I don't want to see that happen.

The tarot cards really confuse me, and I don't know how much to rely on them: whether they're highly relevant or more just flavor.

I think she's the only person he - as he is now - has been in love with. Perhaps when he was living in the ancient times before he saw the need to rebel he fell in love. But at some point he seems to have changed (somewhat) and taken on a more serious attitude. Following that shift, I don't think he would have allowed himself the luxury of love, but Lavellan surprises him. As to what that means with spoilers...meh?

I think we've barely scratched the surface when it comes to Solas.  I think what we've been shown of him in game IS actually the truth.  I don't think he's pretending to be something he's not.  I can't see BioWare having him be a LI if he's essentially a lie/fake.  It's a terrible thing to do to the fans.  But I think we've only been shown the best side of him, with tiny glimpses of the darker aspects.  Especially if you don't have high approval with him.

I can see how he is a trickster.  It does come out some times.  Especially anything with Sera.  He's subtle most of the time, I can't help but giggle though when he gets his digs in.

Solas has the least content, and I think it's because BioWare has biiiiiig plans for him.  They couldn't give us too much without showing their hand I think.  Plus I think they had to be careful how much they gave us so that we didn't feel lied to or manipulated.  I mean there's already those who feel like he is a liar and was using the Inquisition all along.  Us in the Solas Recovery Wing saw the beauty of his character early on, and dove in with no hesitation.  But those folks who didn't enjoy him as much, or maybe understand him, don't have the luxury of being optimistic like we are.  (Not sure where I am going with this :P)  I'm stupidly attached to Solas, and not because of the romance, that's just a side benefit.  Even my Human and Qunari Inquisitors are on good terms with him.  He's intriguing.  I like the way he sees the world.  Solas suddenly becoming a villain, or dying, devastates me, because there's so much potential there for so much MORE than that.

I'm with those that think he might not be wrong in what his plans are.  Game and story wise, the idea of something like the Veil coming down, and the impact it would have on Thedas; I want to play that game.  BioWare has created a world and story I get lost in.  (My poor fiance misses me when a new game comes out.  He feels like he's suddenly single lol) I love their characters, even the easily unlikable ones like Viv.  I am ready for things to get messy.  We've dealt with a Blight, we watched a nobody become a Champion, we've built a super power and sealed the Breach.  I am excited at the prospect of doing something that are nothing like any of those things.  Part of me wants Solas to succeed, and not as an antagonist or villain.  I am curious what the world would be like with immortal elves and magical dwarves.  (provided that IS where the series is going)

I kinda rambled on a bit, sorry.  Just had a lot of these thoughts rolling around in my head.

Whatever DLC they make about Solas..they would need to make two different versions. One for those of us who romanced him and one for those that didn't. It would be like having two DLC at once. ^_^  The only reason I would play my human rogue again. While I did enjoy playing her and romancing Cullen...it's just...not the same. It felt like a totally different game. Romancing Solas is just so romantic..so magical...no one else can even come close. I wonder if the developers regret making him romance-able.

I didn't play the Witch Hunt DLC, but I suppose it's generally the same thing? An important party member with a secret plan (that some wardens romanced) that we go after?

Yeah. Witch Hunt was a bit of a let-down but the premise was that you went looking for Morrigan even though you told her not to and eventually found her. You never do find out her plan, other than that she needed an Eluvian for it.

Even if this were a joke, I would buy it. Like it's just a single mission and all you do is run around the Hinterlands collecting eggs but every time you pick one up Solas has some random banter lines and at the end if you turn them all in you get armor that lets you dress him up in a hilarious bunny costume.  I need sleep guys and it's only 4:30 pm
