My feeling has always been he does love her, esp if you hear some of the dialog from Cole...Solas, to me, seems very sad and lonely.  I think in the past he had to do something that was necessary, but at the same time terrible.  I don't think he feels he deserves her or to drag her into his mess anymore than he already has.  I feel he should let her decide that though instead of making the decision for both of them.

Bioware may try to write him as evil in the future, I don't know, but I think that is too easy of an answer and whatever is going on with him is a complicated matter of doing what is necessary, even if in the eyes of others it might be perceived as wrong/evil. What happened with Flemeth seemed consensual to me. Flemeth tells Morrigan she was never in danger of having her body taken because she can't force a spirit into her...I don't think Solas could pull one from Flemeth without her consent. In my scenario though more than just Mythal/Flemeth was passed to Solas and I do worry who is in control of that body now.

Well I think on the final point, the spoiler contains an interesting spin too.

And of course he actually cared about her. People are being so emo today, lol. They wouldn't write a romance that was intentionally bait and switch. I feel pretty confident that Gaider and Weekes have better story instincts than that, and also want to sell games. Not that this guarantees a happy ending by any means, but I have no doubt whatsoever that "what we had was real" is... real.

In this concept art his eyes seem to be yellow too, and his smile looks kind of... calculating? Don't really know how to say it

Something was passed to him, and there was a scene in the fade where Morrigan threatens Flemeth, and Flemeth's eyes flair up exactly like Solas's eyes do at the end.  I just can't figure out what to take from that final scene other than all that was Flemeth/Mythal/Urthemiel was passed to him, or took him over, not sure which at this point but if Flemeth was telling the truth whatever happened to him was with his consent.

I'm like 98% sure he cares! But I also think he might see the practical benefit of being close to her. As others have pointed out, he can be ruthless if it's required. I don't think he decided to get close to her because of that or anything, but I think once he did realise she was in love with him, it might have crossed his mind at some point that it was probably good for his disguise, or if he needed her for something in the future... 

 

I think he dismissed that idea (otherwise he wouldn't have ended the relationship), but I think it must have crossed his mind at some point...

Agreed. I don't doubt that his feelings were real. I more worry about where it might go from here. Are we going to get something like Morrigan or something like Thane? I hope it's the former, but it's easy to get drawn into the idea that it might be the latter every once in a while.

Well I doubt she'd mention it. It's sort of an insurance policy. She might be willing to give Solas power but she's still Morrigan's mother and still wants to retain some agency, so she hides away whatever made her a god. Maybe she didn't give it to Morrigan directly - I think she hid it in the Eluvian - but she put it somewhere that she could find it. It might be that whatever made Mythal a god is separate from whatever Solas took. She was able to separate Kieran and the OG soul, so why not?

I am pretty sure he was leaving her with some reassurance that their relationship wasn't a sham or a trick. If things go like we expect he's probably going to have an impact on the world and she's probably going to hear about it. I think Solas just wants her to know that, despite everything, their relationship was the real deal.

got Solas' god mojo on her hand, that doesn't mean she became him. I'm sure he was wondering about that, hence his questions about whether she had changed since the mark, but I think you can transfer power without transferring the essence. Flemeth did it between DAO and DA2, when she sent the gem to the Dalish in Kirkwall but was still in her hut to meet the Warden later.

said that Flemeth was nurturing a spark for Solas. She was expecting he would come. She planned to give him what he wanted as long as she could pass Mythal's essence on to Morrigan. I'm guessing the blue thing going through the Eluvian was Mythal's essence and what Solas had transferred to him was the spark that she nurtured. Morrigan has no reason to mention it in the epilogue...if she even has it at that point in time. The stinger does takes place after the credits. Evidence points to Solas being alone and in control of his body (except with an extra boost in power). Besides, there was no way he was consenting to having his body and will taken when he has a duty that he would kill anyone to fulfill. Frankly I don't think he would consent even if he didn't have a mission considering his stance on free will.

Real as in genuine. I mean almost everything that happened occurred outside the Fade so if he was like "yes those things happened in the physical world,".... I think it would be a pretty silly thing to say. Plus the Fade/Real World distinction isn't a big one for Solas anyway, so why would he point it out? To him, things that happen in the Fade are not much, if any less real than what happens in the mundane world.

 

No, I think it is very important to Solas that Lavellan know he was not manipulating her. He knows that she will find out his identity eventually, and he wants her to know that while everything else might be false, that part - their relationship, and the way he felt about her - was real. He is so accustomed to being maligned, and hated, and alone, and he might think he is fine with that but we know from his fear that he's not. He doesn't want to be alone and for a small moment in time he wasn't and he doesn't want that to be false. But over and above that I think he cares about Lavellan and he doesn't want her to feel lesser, to feel used or manipulated. He wants her to know that he valued and respected her because she is the person he Loves.

 

That's my take anyway. I'm a Romantic, and an optimist in this case, but I don't have any doubt in my mind about that part of the relationship.

Like others have said, it doesn't surprise me at all.  The only thing that did was the bit about Morrigan.  As for Solas, I think there's a reason his romance card is so different from his regular endgame card.  Lavellan loving him meant something to him.  I like to think that it did potentially change him.  He was never evil to start with, but he's driven and so focused on doing what he thinks is right.  Of course he would kill his oldest friend.  It's for something more, something that he tried to achieve long ago and lost.

 

Still, I think Lavellan reached him, touched a spot he thought no one ever could, and I bet he will have implications in the long run.  I just don't want her to randomly appear in DA4 and be killed or something stupid like that.  I'm still holding on for them spending the remainder of their days in Uthenera together.

Yes! I don't know if you read the Lavellan x Skyhold smut, but the way it describes Solas' reaction to Lavellan's dress is classic.
