I don't think he could have been exposed to it at a young age, and still be open-minded about the Fade. Or else, what made him open-minded was some serious crisis of faith that then enabled him to consider that maybe the Fade wasn't what he thought? Maybe learning more than one religion and having conflicting expectations that were then reflected in the Fade?

I didn't word that part of my post correctly, sorry (it's pretty late where I am). What I meant was that I agree that at the age he is now, he probably knows what's in the Chant, but didn't have heavy exposure to it when he was young.
About learning more than one religion - maybe this could relate to his possible Dalish parent and Andrastian parent? Maybe he was learning about the Maker and the Creators at once, and this led to some sort of incident while he dreamed in the Fade, which in turn might have led to his desire to research it.
