If you didn't romance Zevran he becomes the Crow's "King" or something like it. So he didn't have to stay, he chose to stay.
It's making me lol too. Mostly because the reactions are way out of proportion. It is honestly nowhere near the the strangest prompt/fill I've seen on the kink meme.

If he is romanced, he wants to stay with the Warden, so he does. He has no other priorities or things going on that are more important to him than being with the Warden.
If he isn't romanced, he's a freelance assassin. I'm assuming actually letting him meet with the Crows is what leads to him becoming their leader, but when the Crows said they wanted to meet Zevran in my non-Zevran-romance world state, I was like, "Eff that, you aren't getting anywhere near my Zevran." and I helped him get out of Dodge. (At least I think that's what happened in my Zevran war table missions, I've been up like 24 hours now and brain no work anymore.)
Literally every other Origins romance has something else going on, though. Leliana is the Left Hand, Alistair is either still a Warden or a King, and Morrigan is Morrigan. They all have pretty good excuses for being separated from their Wardens (except maybe King Alistair with non-noble Wardens, because screw being a mistress).
I'm playing catch-up guys! Ahh... It's not like Zevran doesn't have other goals or other things he could be doing. He's perfectly OK with being an assassin, but he's the only LI from Origins that decided what they could do was less important than being with the Warden. Morrigan does to a certain extent, since she presumably raises Kieran with romanced Warden, but in DA:I she is not with him so...
I remember when DA Awakenings first came out and I romanced Zevran on PT number two I wrote a really bad fic (I was 14 so give me a break) about "In a perfect world..." because Zevran was off doing his thing and I thought "ah they'll be separated forever because his Crow business is so important." Like two people always missing one another because their paths don't converge. Anyway the fic was basically contrasting "another world" of them together and "this world" (I kid you not, I know Solas says "in another world" and Lavellan says "why not this one" but that's the exact phrasing I used x.X), and lamenting about how sad it was blah blah...
So that little line in DA:I about the Warden and Zevran being together meant the world to me. That doesn't have anything to do with Solas, except to illustrate how one small tiny thing can make a whole romance awesome. Zevran x My Warden is now my favorite in the series because I feel like he must love her so much to choose her...Solas pls love Lavellan as much *cries*

I would never think Solas would be dominant. If anything he would be mischievous in a fun and sexy way. Certainly know what he was doing, and there would be a lot kinky fade things to do.
But the very essence of his character is NOT to be a Dom. He is disgusted by slavery and the domination of others. The entire story arch of his life revolved around him rebelling to free people.
Maybe long a go when he was young and powerful. Maybe. But he's essentially an old man by now. Do you know how kinky old men have to get to keep things interesting? He probably knows a lot more than just tying you up. A lot more.

I think he'd need only the briefest of teases, or looks, and he's do some rather involved nomming. Just the way his body folds over Lavellan shows some spark of that. Outright domination, no, no tying up, gagging, etc etc etc. But definitely some more aggro play.

Like...I dunno, even the softdom stuff is kinda pushing it for me. Anything that has Solas making the first move. Unless he's really drunk or something. And even then, I think he'd wait until he was 100% positive that it was what Lavellan wanted. Every time he touches her, you can see him hesitate. He's confident, yes, but when it comes to his relationship with Lavellan he's very very conflicted. So Solas grabbing Lavellan and pushing her down on the bed, even if she's totally cool with it, sets off all sorts of OOC alarm bells for me.
Personally, I don't mind dom stuff in fanfic, but only if it makes sense for the character. For example, I would read the sh*t out of a well-done and respectful Iron Bull fic that features dom/sub stuff, because that is in his romance already. I also think light femdom works really well for Hawke and Fenris. Solas, though? Not so much. Anything with him being controlling just goes against his entire characterization. He doesn't want to control anybody, let alone Lavellan.
What I can see is him being very experienced. And to portray a sexual encounter between an experienced and a less experienced partner without getting into power dynamics is tough. But it's doable if you go about it the right way.
It's the tension between passion and hesitation that makes Solas's romance so wonderful. It's very...subtle. And I guess I'm not surprised to see the fandom at large missing that subtlety, especially with all of the Fen'harel baggage. It's a shame, though.
But every so often you get stuff like this, which so perfectly encapsulates that tension without needing to put it into words. So browsing tumblr for Solas stuff is still worth it.

Or I could see him being dom in a playful way, say if Lavellan initiated it and he turned the tables. But 99% of the stuff I read in that vein is OOC. Still read it though >.>

If Zevran is romanced then yeah, I don't think there's any story-driven reason for him to leave the Warden. He can probably do wham bam thank you ma'am freelance assassinations while staying on the move with the Warden, and I think by that point the Crows have decided to just stay clear of Zevran as long as he stays clear of them? I'm not sure. Either way, if he's romanced, he has no real reason to leave the Warden's side that I know of.
And if you're talking about Justinia, Leliana knew her even before she knew the Warden. If you mean the Inquisitor, Leliana didn't just hightail it back to the Warden because Justinia, a long time friend and very important person to her, was just murdered. Then there's also that gigantic hole in the sky. She stays because she wants to get to the bottom of it. Like Varric, she's not one to just ignore something like that and go, "Not my problem." Unless that's her personality when she's hardened. I wouldn't know because I don't think I ever did a playthrough of DA:O where she was hardened. lol
ALSO, it seems like it's the Warden who leaves the LIs behind anyway. It's like... "Bye, babe. You stay and do your thing. I gotta go find out if I can cure the Calling I won't eventually die from the taint. You know me. I totally won't get into any kind of trouble."

Solas has, what I can only consider to be a CENTURY of built-up tension. Not just sexual, but emotional tension. The way he pulls away from Levellan when she steals their first kiss, only to succumb to that base need and take her mouth into his...
I imagine his controlled resistance when tempted to be physically intimate with her. My Levellan was a little smart-ass, so Aliyah would most likely poke and prod at him for a reaction. He would remain reserved, for only a time however. Once released, his passion would be unbridled. Years of experience and knowledge, pent-up aggression and longing, all of which would be released onto his "prey", but not in the "I'm-basically-about-to-rape-you-way", in the, Levellan is the most deserving of his affections... kind of way.

This is exactly how I feel! I've never posted here before, but I was like, I think I need a support group lol. I've been analyzing my life and identified some external factors that I thought might be contributing, but really, I thought I must be just going batshit. One thing I will say is that it's uncanny how much the situation feels like an ACTUAL breakup. I haven't shed any real tears, but since I finished the game a couple of days ago, I've been thinking about it an inordinate amount.
It would be interesting to compare the reactions of people who completed the romance knowing in advance that Solas would leave to those who were caught unawares. I think myself being the latter category definitely increased the impact it had on me.
