Does this mean I have to go back and play DA:O and DA2 yet again just to obsess of every little tidbit?

Yes, we all should, and post every single time we find Solas/Fen'Harel references like the bat**** crazy people we are.  ^_^

And then share some halla bacon.  Then wash it down with a steaming cup of our collective Levellan tears.

It is fascinating! And something humans have been doing since art was born. You have the author's intent, and then what the audience makes of it- sometimes, the two aren't the same.

I forgot the title, but there's a short story that my teacher in highschool gave us to write about. We picked it apart for all these tiny meanings. That it was Faustian, it was about a man in red who was clearly the devil. The teacher then revealed that the author intended it to be a story about Santa. It doesn't make what we read into the story was less valid, but it really is fascinating.

Which is why I don't tend to get too hung up on canon/noncanon, so long as what ends up being 'true' canon doesn't feel like it has detached itself completely from the narrative. Sometimes I have a vault of little head theories, and I think- well, if this isn't what the game ends up doing, it could make a really awesome novel someday.

It reminds me of Cassandra Claire, who began as a writer with her own Draco Trilogy fanfiction, based on HP world. It was so good and popular, that she swept together best ideas and came up with her own universe of City of Bones. Just saying.

And the wait is absolute torture, too. How long was it before Witch Hunt came out? I wasn't directly involved with the fandom then - just joined, popped in now and then. I did see that people were pissed about the Morrigan thing, and hoped against hope for closure.

Origins came out around the holidays and it was the following fall, as I recall. There were a couple DLC out quickly, because there had been a delay in development time, so Stone Prisoner and Warden's Keep were out almost immediately. Then there was a long lag til Return to Ostagar, because they had engine problems or something. I think they were gearing up for Awakening. Awakening came out and then a few throwaway DLC and Leliana's Song, then finally Witch Hunt.

The no expansion thing could be good for us if it leads to higher quality small DLC. The DLC for Origins was very... uneven.

Witch Hunt came out a little less than a year after DA:O, though I'd prefer something longer and more substantial than Witch Hunt if we're being honest.

I'm playing DA:O now! I geeked out earlier when I encountered Flemythal for the first time! I'm holding off on the Dalish until last but I'm so excitedddddd

I'm not sure that they all read fanfiction. While some may browse tags, it seems like they have a.. complicated relationship with fanfiction of their characters. DG wrote a blog post about it.

http://dgaider.tumbl...9/on-fanfiction

Just read it...interesting post.  It makes me think of the balance we strike btwn the ownership we feel of Solas, and the acknowledgement that his fate (and, by extension, ours) is in the hands of Patrick Weekes.

Personally, I'd want to avoid fanfic of my work, b/c I'd always be worried that I'd somehow cribbed the ideas from fanfiction instead of coming up w/ them on my own.

Ah well, she is a bit of a controversial figure, although I won't deny that she can spin a highly readable tale and has excellent business acumen.  I was also struck by how some of her AU fiction accurately predicted what J.K. Rowling herself would include in the books later on.

Isn't that also how the 50 Shades of Grey series started(but with a Twilight fanfiction)?

No idea, I despise both titles *shrugs*

But it wouldn't be that uncommon anyway

You could say that all books are fanfiction for life. At least, that's what I snarked to my prof when we were talking about this during senior seminar during undergrad. I got a chuckle and then a glare >.>

Lol, Allan Schumacher is All Fears Come to Life?

It was Luke Kristjanson who told us they had talked about an Alistair DLC that never was. Instead we got Leliana's Song and Witch Hunt. I'm not bitter, oh no.

There was almost an Alistair DLC?! I would have played that! Never played Leliana's Song, and while I love her in DA:I, can't say I've been interested in her for any of her other (many) appearances.

Absolutely! I am familiar with the work, although I haven't read it. To add another name to the list: Una McCormak got started writing fanfiction for Star Trek. She was known for her stories about Elim Garak. Fast forward to today, and she's basically in charge of his character in the expanded universe.

I think the transition of fanfiction writers into professional writers is inevitable, and one we'll continue to see a lot of. The same way that many fan artists start their careers drawing characters, or modders transitioning to game developers by adding content onto their favorite games. Art requires passion, and the internet allows passion to be shared with other people. It can be hard to generate instant interest with original content- but fanart and fanfiction and modding allows for an instant connection.

Art is sort of a crazy field, full of questionable ownership and ideas. The dangerous part is when the author and the audience become antagonistic against one another. And that can be very difficult to ever reconcile.

Someday in the future, we'll know the whole story about what is going on with Solas. People should never feel like their interpretation is wrong- it just might be different from the grand scheme of things. It can be hard to untangle emotions from the whole business. But part of being a fan is allowing a certain element of trust in the authors. And if you really don't like how it ended up? There's nothing to stop you from writing your own story. Chances are there's someone who will read it. You can't kill an idea.

[Just don't use your own idea to police other fans- which is unfortunately what tends to happen when creative ownership gets out of hand.]

It is a question on the nature of creativity. My professor used to say that it was impossible to create anything new, only to modify something, already present in one's experience.

Unfortunately, there isn't much that's known about Shartan, but multiple sources read that he was a slave of the Imperium, and he escaped with his fellow elves. It's mentioned in the 'Dark Moon' codex:

"They say that Shartan's followers stole whatever they could find to make weapons. They fought with knives of sharpened stone and glass, and with bows made from broken barrels or firewood. This bow was ox horn, made in secret over the course of months by a slave who worked in the slaughterhouses of Minrathous.

"The slave's name has been lost to history, and the verses that spoke of his deeds, stricken from the chant, but the weapon endures."

There is a little more that's revealed about Shartan's life during his war against the Imperium. According to the codex 'Glandivalis':

"It is heresy today to speak of Shartan, an elven slave that rose up against his Tevinter masters to help Andraste's barbarian invasion.

"It seems most people would prefer to believe that Andraste crossed the Waking Sea with little more than a basket of flowers and songs of peace and harmony. The truth is that she came with a horde of warriors at her back, and that without a rebellion occurring behind the enemy lines it's very possible that the holy invasion could have been foiled.

"Shartan was a slave who became a fabled warrior and later a devotee of Andraste herself, and we know this because the Canticle of Shartan spoke of their meeting on the Valarian Fields. Andraste gave him a mystic blade that he called Glandivalis (translation unknown) and he even fought at Maferath's side. But now the Canticle is one of the Dissonant Verses, and has been ever since the Exalted March of the Dales.

"It seems we don't wish to speak of elven heroes or the role they played in Andraste's war any more than we wish to speak of barbarians or the bloody death toll that accompanied the war. With each passing age, heroes like Shartan become more of a fable, but some of us will always know the truth."

I won't be rid of so easily!

Admittedly, we don't actually have a lot to go on so don't take anything I'm saying as anything more than my crazy theories. The difficult part is deciding what the Dalish may have gotten right, and what may be completely wrong. We just have fragments. But I do like what fragments we have, and trying to make sense of what they imply.

Oh, I hope you didn't take my comment the wrong way!  I am just selfishly hoping for a place where all your theories are cataloged so I can read them all over again!  :)

It's nice that all this stuff with Solas and the elves has apparently been planned from the beginning, but boy... it didn't actually feel like it until DA:I. For me, at least. I've always been super interested in the elves and their history, but even in DA2, with all the Merrill stuff (which I think you can skip out on entirely if you don't recruit her, right?), it felt like they were as much a background thing as the dwarves still are.

It always felt like the focus was more on mages and templars to me, especially in DA2, so while I am beyond excited about the elves suddenly taking the fore, it also still feels like it kinda came out of nowhere. I mean, there were hints, definitely, but... I dunno what I even want to say. I just really wanna see what they have planned next. XD

Haha, maybe I'll make a blog post someday! Or maybe condense them all into a small narrative.

It still weirds me out that the devs go into character tags and read all the fanfiction...and the smut. It's like...oh god they know our kinks. XD

But this ALSO means they know how much the Solas fans want to reconcile with Solas...so...yay?

Writers usually tend to avoid fanfiction, so if you want to use that as a reason to not feel awkward, hey, whatever you have to tell yourself. :D

And Sera. I had to replay her conversations a few times before I got her speech pattern down pat. Speaking with Solas, Cole, and Sera made my brains implode; Solas was a bit easier to figure out once I got his rhythm down, then Cole is like a text book describing people as fast as their thoughts allowed, and Sera talks in like analogies.

I was the same though I understood a little of what she was saying but I had to talk to her a few times to clearly understand the way she spoke. Cole completely understood....I used to read lots of poetry when I was in my teens and that's the way Cole is it's like poetry in little pieces when he speaks,if that even makes sense lol. :)

Also I agree Solas wasn't to hard to understand I have read the Old king James Bible and old stories plenty of times growing up and his is pretty close to that but a bit modern.

I liked Leliana's Song, though the best part was the dungeon song and Sketch. I wish we could see more of him... and not looking as derp as he did in DA2. Such a cutie.

Maybe I really do just have a thing for elves...
