That is a very interesting thought. Presumably there would have to be some catalyst involved in making a new creature or race.

Kinda like the theory that the Ancient Elves created the Qunari/Kossith by using some kind of dragon blood magic ritual?

@Tielis - Your avatar has a slight Zevran thing goin' on... *ahem* J-just sayin'.
Yeahhh, I've noticed that lately.
It wasn't intentional, but I must have been channelling Zev when I made him. Darn sexy elven rogues... Mahanon and Zev would get along so well!
EDIT: Close up he doesn't look as much like Zev, now that I think about it. Must be the freckles, and yes, I am very disappointed that they don't go all the way down. *ahem* Link to more pics of him if you're interested.

Yeah, they'd have had to make them from something, and that art with the downcast people (possibly slaves) inside of the halla makes me wonder even more. The red could represent blood magic, used to actually cause the change to happen. It would have taken a lot of power to achieve something like that. If I'm right, and halla are people... well it would also explain why they seem to be way smaller than they used to be, too. The elves shrank, why not halla if halla used to be elves too? And what with how the Dalish insist on treating halla like people, sure it could just be a quaint tribal tradition, but what if it's actually a fragment of lore that they have, that they've misremembered the purpose of?
I wonder what Solas could tell us about halla...

I know we were talking about baby griffons in here a few days ago..
I have a hardcore love for men taking care of animals. And children, even though I don't particularly like children themselves.
Not sure if Solas would make a good father though. The whole abandoning-your-loved-ones-for-the-greater-good thing and all ![]()
First off, wow, I had to catch up on around 30 pages... you guys are prolific these days.
Don't give up hope just yet. (And yes, I know about Cillian and I adore him, I like to play him and the archer in multiplayer because they're both just so nice!) While I don't write smut, I haven't yet decided how Solas and Lavellan will be resolved, other than there will be closure in some form or another. While she might not romance Abelas if things don't work out with Solas, she's been running around with Abelas and Cole in her party for a while, so... wouldn't be that strange if they kept one another company, at least.
/snip/
Right, back on my halla theory...
You guys may want to hold off on the halla bacon. I avoided killing them as much as possible (they tend to get in the crossfire) because canonly, the Dalish view them as their brethren, their kin. After all, the Dalish believe that Ghilan'ain turned into a halla.
Well, I don't think she turned into a halla, but I think she might have turned other people into them (notice the huge halla with downcast people/slaves? in it in one art pic). It isn't just that the halla can only be tamed by befriending them, or that they are apparently super-smart and understand things most animals can't, or even that the halla keeper in DAO seemed to be able to speak to them somehow. I think the halla are actually honest-to-goodness people, slaves who were turned into beasts to serve Ghilan'nain, possibly also to serve as an intelligent sort of prey for Andruil's hunts.
Really wish there were a way to avoid killing halla entirely but there just isn't, they get stuck in the crossfire and they die.
It's not canon for a Dalish to kill them, unless she just doesn't agree with Dalish beliefs.
But yeah, until it's confirmed that halla aren't actually people (or weren't sometime in the past), I am totally not eating 'em. (Besides, Lavellan is Dalish and that'd be like eating her sisters and brothers... Halla aren't livestock, or pets to the Dalish, they are friends. Gross, seriously!)
So you're saying the halla are basically the elven version of the gollums *shudders*

Yeah! I think there's a possibility that it happened. Perhaps developed to fight for whatever god 'commissioned' them? And Ghilan'ain sounds like a prime candidate to have been the one to create them.

I find it entirely plausible. It doesn't sound like the Elven Pantheon were very nice people, and given what we know about the monstrosities that the Tevinter Imperium commit (who, mimicked much from the Ancient Elves they destroyed/captured), it wouldn't surprise me in the least that some seriously messed up shite was going in the days of Arlathan. It's all so very interesting!

No, they are living creatures, not souls stuck into stone. I would guess their bodies were twisted and reshaped into a form that Ghilan'ain found appealing, so that they could do her bidding. And perhaps she also wanted to honor Andruil, or the like, so... deer could serve as mounts, and since they were people-smart, they could be very interesting to hunt. It's both super-creepy and fits quite well into the new information we have on Ghilan'ain's actual behavior and how she ascended to godhood.

She's probably behind any weird creatures/races, given her penchant for reshaping the living things of the world.

Felassan talks about the halla a bit (and he might have been working for Solas, given how his final line was likely going to reference how Briala reminded him of a certain mythological figure), but the Dalish revere the halla as special, and the halla are said to lead the dead into the afterlife, so I think that their religion figures heavily into how the People view them. It's possible that there could have been more to it, at one point in time.
The codex reads, "No creature is more revered by the Dalish than the halla. No other animal has a god of its own. These white stags are much larger than ordinary deer, and the Dalish halla keepers carve their antlers as they grow, making them curve into intricate designs. In ancient times, these stags bore elven knights into combat, but since the fall of the Dales, they are used less as mounts and more to pull the aravels."

Please tell me you're joking.
The thing is, they really fixed the elf faces in DA:I, but the bodies still look horrid. That's... kind of worse, in my opinion -- dude is hot, just don't take off his clothes.
Oh, Zevran... I will never forgive what they did to you, my dear.
Spoiler
while i agree that zevran....sort of got hit with the ugly stick in DA2 xD i actually think marethari's beautiful in DA2 and i think merrill looks much nicer in DA2 and in DAO (i also loved eve myles' voice).

Actually Morrigan may indeed be Flemeth's biological daughter. There is a theory that she may have been conceived on the night when Flemeth pulled aside Maric for a private chat, which Maric then never wanted to speak of. We never found out precisely what was said, or what they did. So, if you did make Alistair do the Dark Ritual, Kieran may be the child of incest. If the Dark Ritual wasn't disturbing enough for you, before, well... Enjoy!
That... can't be right... right? It's just a wild theory? ![]()

Oh poor Fenris, I was really sad my Hawke only said like 2 things about him. I freaking loved Hawke/Fenris.
Also how many other people choose elves for all their romances. It's gone Zev, Fen, and now Solas.

True answer is we don't know. All we know is that Flemeth met with Maric, and they made a deal offscreen. We never found out what that deal was. Some people think the deal was to father Morrigan. But it might have had something to do with Maric's dragon blood too.

Fenris was so hot, but the romance felt more forced than the one my Lavellan had with Solas because my Hawke was a mage who was pro-mage.
