eww, I don't want Solas to act like that.

Solas: Lavellan?  Look at thiiis- like sneaking into the Inquisitor's quarters.  Heavy risk, but the priiize...

Lavellan: I was wondering when you'd show.  What's your intention, Solas?

Solas: To give Corypheus every kind of hell I can, breach or not.  But until then, I want aaaalll the time I can get.  Win, lose, doesn't matter.  I want you.

Lavellan: Sounds like you better make every minute count, Hah'ren.

Oh that's not weird, that's probably from the old days...it made perfect sense to us back then :D

What I pretty much got out of the interview was that the Solas romance was included only for characterization sake - to make him a more sympathetic villain.  Oh dear.  Can we all agree that it backfired, albeit in a good way?

Please let our Lavellans move on!  Please, I'm begging you BioWare guys!

I definitely did not get that out of it. The romance arc helps add another layer to the character that romancing him helps you see and understand, but the rest? Not so much. His feelings were real. He wanted to be honest about it. But for reasons we - and Lavellan - couldn't know at that point in time, he had to pull away. And when you consider the truth, yeah, it's not something that one romance cut scene can adequately explore. It would have felt cheap for him to be all, "Yep, orb, Cory, Dread Wolf," and have you either gasp and chase him off or fall madly into his arms anyway. That would have been some weak writing and a very cruddy thing to do with Solas's character at that point, regardless of the stinger at the end.

And while Solas is flawed and makes bad decisions, just like the rest of us, we really don't know if he will be a villain when we see him next. He might end up like Hawke and oops another catastrophe, or he might be the direct result the world goes to **** (again?). Or he could be attempting to stop worse things from happening and that's why he had to leave to set things right. I'm not willing to find some manipulative ulterior motive to everything he was written to say and do. That weakens the character just as much, and Patrick Weekes has proven to be a far better writer than that.

I don't think so...I think part of the point was that he isn't a villain. Patrick said he had trouble writing villains and gave an example of an actual villain he wrote. Solas is meant to be more complicated than that, someone who makes bad decisions for a cause he believes is moral. Yes I went and used that line again. Bottom line, I don't think Patrick sees Solas as a villain.

This thread is threatening to kill me again.

On the topic of Corypheus, even if he came across as weak to some people in DAI I found it interesting how he seems to be someone so bitterly jaded about his beliefs from what he found in the Black City that he sort of... went mad? trying to find a way to make sense of himself and the world, and in doing so wanted to become a god where none existed. Makes him stand out as something more than an ugly endboss antagonist when you start thinking of it that way.

He was definitely interesting, with his angle of lost faith and giving people something real to have faith in. I think he just got overshadowed by all the ancient elven stuff happening, especially after the stinger. He didn't feel quite as... connected to the story maybe?

Unfortunately sometimes you still come off sounding like that one person in a bar. You know the person.

Yeah it's only okay if I imagine that Lavellan was drunk 100% of the time. Which, I mean, would be understandable. Then in her head, she's all, "HAH I'm so smooth," and everyone else is like >.> We-ell I guess we have to humor her, she is the Inquisitor....

Not really. I think most of us like Solas because he's the sweet intelligent type who also happens to be smooth and passionate. Jocab just seemed sleezy to me in that scene. Not smooth or sexy. EWWW

Oh man, finally got a chance to listen to the interview... and I love and appreciate team optimism- the world needs more believers in HEA!- but I gotta say, I took something completely different away from Mr Weekes' words about the romance.  The fact that Solas almost told Lavellan about the truth, and that she was almost enough to make him "give up his past" does not make me see hearts and rainbows in the future.  I mean, he loves her, really, really loves her, and he still couldn't step away from his goals?  If she couldn't change his mind then, I don't think anything will.

Ohhhhh the glorious sadness!  The tragedy of it all!  There must be something wrong with me- I'm addicted to the sorrow!

Let us not forget the boneheaded Kaidan romance arc:

ME 1: 'I love you with all the love that is love, Shepard!' Kaidan says.

ME 2: Shep dies. Comes back. 'WTF u r evil now go away 4eva!' Kaidan says. So you go. Move on to, say, your boo Garrus. Kaidan likewise moves on. All is good, right?

ME 3: No. 'I understand why you cheated and I will graciously forgive you' says Kaidan.

What the effin' EFF, Bioware.

P.S. Garrus is the man.

P.S.S. Dear Bioware, I love you anyway.

He shows up at the end in a pair of flip/flops(even though it's winter), board shorts, a pack of natty light.

Solas: Anyone for a game of cornhole?

Lavellan: You are an abomination and must die.

That is the only scenario in which I would willingly kill him.

I honestly think the Forgotten Ones may not actually exist. They are just the remnants and memories that the Dalish ancestors had of the crueler nature of their gods. Which is why Fen'Harel is considered to be a kin to both of them. He's the only god that they are willing to remember the bad parts of.

The old gods themselves are the trapped elven gods. [In my theory.]

The thing that makes me wonder in particular, is how all those old Tevinter constellations seem to match up Old Gods and specific Creators...like, a lot.  But I'm still leaning towards the Old Gods being the Forgotten Ones because I think they probably existed as an actual rival group, and the idea of the Forgotten Ones being locked away in the abyss sounds a lot like the Archdemons.  But it does feel like it could be either way.

Love isn't the end all and be all of everyone's existence. Right now, no one knows what Solas is doing besides Flemythal, so no one has tried to talk him down (if he even needs to be talked down). He couldn't convince himself but that doesn't mean he couldn't be convinced.

Edit: Top of the page Solas!

Yeah, this was me, 'cept w/ Thane.  Then Thane dies, and Shep is like, "Actually Kaidan, you're sort of boring.  Also, you don't have an awesome nickname for me.  Maybe you should fix that."

*sigh*

Need to get out of this funk I'm in.

Here, have some Solas screenshots I took in the Hissing Wastes the other night. Hard to get screenshots (on console, for me) because any time I get close enough to swing my camera around, my companions start moving away. On that note, any way to get them to close that gap and "follow" you more closely? That would make group shots much easier.

Here's one:

solas_wastes_1.jpg

And here's when I learned how to deactivate the HUD for better shots:

solas_wastes_2.jpg

And here's my poor Mikayla. She only has a few more sidequests to wrap up before she gets to head off to the Temple of Mythal and then subsequently get her heart shattered.

I'm not sure I actually dare buying and playing any DLC after this. I'm a pessimest, this cannot end well.

Yeah, railroading to the max.  Do not want.

Buuttt... new hot elf romance starting 6 months to a year after Solas has ditched?  Yes, please.

(Sorry, loyal Solasmancers.  I'm off that train for good now.)

I had to dig up this post I read, jeez ages, ago.

I have nothing but love and respect for Wrex because after Shep convinced him to sacrifice a cure to stop Saren, he still greeted Shepard like a friend and helped out in any way he could. Kaidan was basically this:

Horizon:
"Oh Shep, my one true love! I am so not thanking you for pulling my ass out of dodge together with the rest of the colony. Let me instead call you a heinous traitor. No, you don't get to explain how come you're with them instead of busy repainting the new Normandy with Alliance colors. Traitor! Watch me pimp away and sulk at the same time."

Letter:
"Yeah, I could have handled Horizon better, but you still suck. Oh, try not to die, we might totally hook up if you don't smell too much of Cerberus after you're done doing my job."

Mars:
"Cerberus! Why are you still with Cerberus? Oh you're not? Don't believe you. Allow me to interrupt the mission some more by asking the same thing I did not 2 minutes ago. Oh, ****, you look mad! Totally trust you."

5 minutes later:
"Are you sure you're not a Cerberus zombie? What about my precious feelings?!"

10 minutes later
*nearly dies of not being a trained marine and space wizard while attacked by a fembot*

Hospital:
Kaidan - "OMG, YOU CHEATED! We're so still together, I wrote you a letter and everything."
Shepard (missing dialog option) - "Are you ****ing kidding me?! We're over!

Hospital again:
"Ha! They made me a spectre after not having another spectre evaluate me."

Coup:
Kaidan - "Cerberus traitor!"
Shepard - "I swear to God, I'll kill you!"
Kaidan - "Uh, Udina, please step aside."

Later:
Kaidan - "I kinda get the feeling that you might have pulled the trigger back there."
Shepard - "Specultating is useless."
Garrus - "Would you?"
Shepard - "Oh, yeah."

Date:
Kaidan - "I forgive you."

I'm sorry, but this is not the character most of my Sheps romanced in ME, because if I had a hint that this was on the table, I'd have saved them for Garrus. I have never seen this sort of writing outside of a Harlequin novel. If I didn't know any better, I'd swear that Jennifer Hepler was on the writing team.

To answer OP, he doesn't get more slack in general due to being dead in 75% of the Virmire outcomes. Ashely on the other hand gets no slack du e to her habit of speaking before thinking.

If I weren't such a War Assets junkie, I'd kill them at the coup.
