I just finished listening to the podcast and... oh my god. I'm going to try and sound as coherent as possible.

It's something of a comfort to have that validation that Solas was never dishonest about his feelings for Lavellan - that's a big deal for a guy with plenty of reasons to lie. More than that, he went with the intention of telling Lavellan who he really was, came so close to leaving the past behind him, because she just meant so much to him. Whatever the future holds, lethallin, at least we have this! This is pretty amazing on its own already!

I don't feel like that vallaslin scene was any lesser after what Weekes has told us. Regardless of whether or not Solas planned to offer to remove the vallaslin from the get go, it was still a very meaningful and thoughtful gesture.

Agh... So many feelings. <3

I stepped away from that podcast feeling, actually quite okay.  In my heart of hearts, I knew the Vallaslin scene had more to it.  The way Solas hung on the words "...the truth" told me that, so to have Patrick Weekes confirm what I felt, was very validating.  I must be a glutton for punishment, because I love the conflict in this romance.  I don't think I would care about it as much as I do, if there wasn't something incredibly profound going on in the background.

I still savor the moments when Solas is trying desperately to hold himself back from being close with your Levellan, the subtle shake of his head, you see his struggle, his yearning, his longing to hold her, but trying to remain true to the path he has set for himself.  It's delicious.

And it's stuck with me, haunted my waking hours and my dreams, literally, I dream of him, what's wrong with me, I'm a grown ass married woman with kids and a dog, why am I so love-sick over a fictional character?! I've never liked bald men, but his voice, and those ears, and his gaze...

...aaaand there goes my attempt at writing something of any importance.

*clears throat*

As I was saying, I would like, at the very least, for any further content to allow those of us who romanced Solas, to have a conversation with him (the one that beautiful jerk promised us before he left us broken-hearted and ALONE), and a chance to either remain in a, how can I put this, in a "long-term relationship", or a final goodbye, so that Levellan can either choose to be single, or choose to romance another.  Whether it be current companions or any future ones they add in (*cough* Abelas *cough*)

Don't!

I romanced him as well, in my second play through. I am glad I did it. I think I needed that. It's a well done romance for totally different reasons, and has it's own depth. I like that it is sweet, with a happy ending without feeling like pandering or empty. Cullen is a great character and his growth is fantastic.

Ditto on the don't (and everything else)!!!

Don't be too down, people! I mean, worst case scenario would have been Weekes going: "Oh no, he's just an evil dude and Lavellan was just too damn fine to resist." That would have been cause for pessimism. Finding out that the romance was sad isn't exactly a shock- everyone is sad. It is working as intended. Anything else isn't going to be spoiled in an interview.

I think part of it might be that maybe on some weird effed up level it would be easier in a way that he's just evil.  Because then you could just get mad and move on.  Something like that.  I think everyone is so melancholy because it was just as real and earth shattering for Solas as it was for Lavellan, actually even more so for him since he was that close to giving up everything and betraying himself for her.  I am feeling mopey cuz I am sad for him.  He's made mistakes, uhh huge ones, but he deserves to not be so burdened and to have something good that is just for him.

For me it's a good kind of sad.

Okay it's ready!

Some things I would like to add to your theory. First, I think the soul of the old god killed by an grey warden is not released, but actually destroyed and forever lost. As for the old gods, I believe they are the forgotten ones, elven gods were known to be able to shapeshift into dragons after all. The tale said how Solas trapped the forgotten ones in the abyss (deep roads?) while trapping the creators into the heavens (I believe it means the fade). Now here it comes the interesting part. I believe the elves also created the darkspawn taint. It was the taint that caused the fall of Arlathan, and then Solas used the Anchor to seal away Arlathan in the fade, were it became the black city, and perhaps the elven gods were trapped in there as well. That picture you showed of elves with red aura? They could also have been ghouls. When you fight Corypheus for the last time, he lifts the land into the skies with the anchor. Maybe that's how Solas did it, he lifted Arlathan away and sent it into the fade through an rift.

I was here but then I was driving five miles into town to visit my friend for New Years and I come back and there are more pages and there's so much pessimism. Pessimism makes Andraste cry you guys.

Mission accomplished.  Holy Tears for all!

I think a lot of the sadness is over how sad Solas is. How sad he's intended to be. We knew he was sad, or at least most of us had guessed at it, but it's different to have the writer say, "yeah, he's tragic." Poor darling. We need hug interrupts. Or a DLC that is just hugging companions. They can package it with the Black Emporium-ish thing and I can never finish another playthrough because I am too busy having Lavellan hug Cole and Solas.

Elves were on the decline from something, but if it was the darkspawn taint, then all the Tevinter people who invaded and crushed the elves would have been tainted as well. There were a successful number of years before the magisters decided to mess with going into the Fade (well, from Tevinter's point of view), and there aren't any stories of blighted creatures of anything since before the first blight happened.

There might not be any actual records, but all the stories are pretty consistent on when darkspawn appears, which is after the magisters tried their Fade nonsense and Dumat became the first archdemon.

I'd totally be ok with a DLC revolving around silly fantasies. Like Merril wanting to ride a gryphon named Feathers. Or exploring a Fade memory as a wolf while running around with your pack. Or giving everyone hugs or a compliment as Cole's silly fantasy. Can you imagine your Inquisitor running up to Vivienne and giving her a hug?

A Proving arena for The Iron Bull. A fully paid Orlesian shopping trip for Leliana.  A story telling competition for Varric to see who can get the most memorable/outrageous.

It could still make sense, though, couldn't it? If the taint was locked away and Tevinter came in to mop up what was left of the elves, and then later decided to try for godhood and broke into the Black City... only to bring it back with them.... It's possible.

Yeah, the ending does allow them to focus on post ending DLC, still I hope most of them can be played whenever you want except for the "Wolf Hunt" one,if we get one, I´d assume that would be where things are set up for DA4.

Oh and happy new year everyone! :)

Don't. I did. It was really sweet and happy with a tad bit of angst. Just what everyone need after a heart shattering breakup with a pixel egghead who stole your epic Mage staff that Dorian could have totally used.

What do you think hugging Solas would be like?

I imagine if Lavellan initiated, he'd tense up at first because he's not used to it but then he'd melt into it and wrap himself around her like he does when he kisses her.  :D

I'm supposed to be getting ready for a New Year's Party but I'm listening to the podcast again because apparently I hate myself.

Weekes: "Well OK...let me word it...because I feel like the honest answer would just make people grumpy with me...it was to make it sadder. Hi Solasmancers, I'm so sorry guys."

That's the line that guts me. He's not like, "ah I cant give you the honest answer because of spoilers," it's because reasons hurt.

I dunno, I still think and hope we'll have the option to affect him in some way. He was pretty static in Inquisition, even within the romance. We never really get the opportunity to go toe-to-toe (barefoot if you're Dalish, hehe) with Solas, to directly challenge him. We know so little about him in DAI that it is almost impossible to do so. Once the Inquisitior knows everything, I'd like to be able to really confront him, and to make him defend himself and not just say "you can't understand". Even if that comes after he does whatever it is he plans to do. Then Quizzie can say, "alright that's fair" or "no that's wrong" and Solas reacts accordingly. I really, really hope that within that confrontation, there's an extra mini-cutscene if you romanced him where you can also abandon or re-affirm the relationship.

I guess the alternative is this: Solas' story as it stands is sad. He goes on to do other things that just make everyone shake their heads because he's wrong and everyone see's he's wrong but he does what he's doing anyway. You go to him and your choice is only to stop him from doing this terrible thing or not stop him. You get a romance scene or a few lines and it's basically like, "yeah I'm sorry but I have these goes and like I said before we can't be together." All that just seems way too static. I feel like at this point redemption is the more interesting option.

But what do I know, I don't write video games! But I'm waving the Team Optimism flag

I guess. Where would it have been kept though? In the Black City itself, or maybe one of the Eluvians leading into the city like in the DAO Dalish origin story? It would have to be contained somewhere or else someone would have stumbled on it earlier. Maybe that's what triggered the magisters' corruption when they actually walked in the Fade? Trying to release the dead whispers of their gods from sealed Eluvians with the wrong key caused a serious backlash.

My thoughts exactly, you've nailed them all in one brilliant post. Would like it if I could

You know guys, as a clinical psychologist I am so very tempted to write some paper on this profound involvement with fictional characters nowadays. After all with modern ways of visualisation and voice acting it's a whole new level compared to novels and stuff
