Hope New Years is treating you well, lovely people!  B)

Morrigan's romance at least had some bit of clarity. She explains what her plans are before the deed. What stings with Solas's romance is that, while we as players know what's going on to some extent, our Inquisitors don't. Lavellan is left with a broken heart and a lot of questions.

True, I didn't consider that point. If after all the DLC, Lavellen doesn't have any answers, I'll be annoyed, but I'm sure that won't happen. It was stated multiple times in the game that she would eventually find out what was going on, so I'm not worried about that.

I got the impression Tielis didn't like the ending because it was tragic though, not because it lacked closure. I could have misunderstood...

Ummm... it seems to be a bit doom-y in here.

*hangs a Team Optimism banner*

*hugs the banner and cries*

I want to believe in a happy ending, but the more I read what people are saying, the less confident I become. So, I just want this story to end, one way or another. I don't mind a bittersweet or even a sad ending - although I would obviously prefer a happier one - , it's lack of said ending that's killing me  :(

This romance is definitely masterwork. I'd say it's the most emotional one out of all I've played so far. It just leaves you here staring at the monitor teary-eyed and wanting more. It's not like a romance you just complete and forget, no, once you're in, it doesn't let go. I think I was never so close to actually understanding what the player character must be feeling like before. I want to be stubborn and confident and believe in a "happily ever after", but deep down I am afraid that it's not going to happen, and it hurts

Here. It has actually driven me crazy, and now I'm writing sobby posts on forums. Well done, indeed.  :P

The only thing that would leave me completely and utterly disappointed is to never have the romance acknowledged again.  I could eventually come to terms with almost any resolution to the romance (keyword: eventually), even though I know I'll be incredibly sad after.  The exact wording escapes me but I got the feeling that Solas' idea of when everything is "all over" is different from Lavellan's, so when he says it'll all be clear if they both survive I think he's telling the truth but the time hasn't come yet.

Agreed--they should have made the romance more available.  I think that is at the crux of many of the complaints...if it's supposed to deepen the character THAT MUCH and is so crucial to understanding him, then why gate the romance to such an extent?  Doesn't that seem to be doing a disservice to other fans?  Another explanation is, then, that it in fact does not matter, and our emotions were toyed w/ for no reason other than to elicit a reaction.

A lot of people decided to role a female elf in their second playthrough. Everyone has the choice of playing a female elf.

Me, I'm just disgusted that it was thrown in at the end just for haha's for only one gender.  I really don't believe that it was intended for anything more than a throwaway romance since it is so heavily railroaded.  Because it was so incredibly done and captured our emotions so well does not change that.

I honestly think you're 100% misinterpreting what Weekes said. Maybe you should go back and give the interview another listen, because what you're saying is not what I heard come out of Weekes' mouth.

Were we ever "off" it? I didn't sign that memo, if so.

I do hope for a happy ending option, as long as it's earned and not just handwave-sappy-cheap. What I think we really need is resolution one way or another. I think the writers know that and I have some trust that they'll try to respect what they started. Weekes cried, Gaider reblogged that art of Solavellan and said he really liked it. They're not totally indifferent. They've done a much better job in resolving the romances in DA than in ME. Not always with equal attention or success, but I think they get that people get invested and want something.

Gaider has written that he doesn't like gotcha setups, and so far I'm willing to believe that wasn't what this was. It's their job to hook you and make you care, or else why make and why play a story-driven game?

Why railroaded?

Ohh which pic did Gaider reblogged?

There are plenty of opportunities for happy endings, along with tragedies. I wouldn't worry too much. When we learn more about whatever it is that Solas has planned, then we'll have a better picture of whether or not a happy ending could ever be possible. There's still so much left up in the air.

I guess if I could say anything, its to hold your pitchforks. The story isn't done yet. If you want to support the romance, then let the writers know how much you enjoyed what you've got so far. Support the character. Turn creative efforts towards fanart and fanfiction. Don't go on the attack. Enjoy the potential for more.

Its going to be a wait. There's no way around it. But that's not a bad thing either.

Lol, he had to pick the one that I didn't like. I mean, I didn't like it because I don't think it characterizes Solas well, not because it isn't a beautiful and emotional piece of art. Why he gotz to pick the ominous oneee.

Crazy over-analysis ahead!

Re: the NA interview, I love how careful Weekes is about describing Solas' anger at the Grey Wardens. He says "he thinks their plan is bad", and the interviewers immediately go "yeah, it's a pretty bad plan".

A bad plan is a stupid plan, likely to fail. If someone wants to specify a morally bad plan, they have to call it an evil plan, because phrases like "bad plan", "terrible plan", "awful plan" force "bad" to be a synonym for "stupid" rather than "wrong".

But instead, Weekes switched the phrase around, to say "their plan is bad". Same words, but the new ordering means that "bad" is no longer forced to be a synonym for "stupid". If Solas hated the plan for being a bad plan, that would mean he hates it because it's reckless or stupid. But he hates that the plan is bad - meaning that it could have a wrongness independent of its stupidity. That alternate meaning gets masked as soon as the interviewers switch the order to the more typical "bad plan".

This is why writers make such interesting interviewees.

I don't know if you've ever noticed this about David Gaider or anything but I think he rather likes things to be ominous.

I love that one myself, not sure why people dislike it. Something about it makes Solas look "dom"? Lol, I think I'm better off for avoiding kink meme and fetish crap because I have no such associations.

Using the fact that Mr. Gaider liked this art for justification that there's a possibility for a happy ending is just...

How many signs do we need, people?

Yeah, for those of you who dig all tragedy all the time, I'm glad you're happy.  Some of us had choices in BioWare games back in the day, and we long for those days to come back.

THAT is what I'm pissed about.  The railroading my God the railroading.  And the fact that we have to PAY AGAIN to get the romance's true ending (if what y'all believe is true -- me, I think we already got it).

It's a great piece of art. I don't like it because I never see Solas acting like that towards Lavellan in the game. He has never behaved as though she's his prey or she's his underling. In the art, he's holding her chin and looking down in a stern/dominating way. I don't like that. I like sweet, passionate and respectful Solas.

It's fine to feel how you feel. It's just that some of your wording in the other posts makes it seem like you're poking fun at the rest of us for thinking differently.

I like it, er, but I don't see it as him sneering down at her as an underling. To me it kind of looks like he is quietly observing with curiosity more than dominance. if it was dominance I don't think he would be holding her chin so tenderly, its more like... gently guiding it so I can get a better look at you.
