ME franchise aside, there's still Anders and possibly Alistair which have people in a huff. The two female LI's from Origins can be deliberately killed or stabbed by the Warden, but show up and are made crucial characters in DAI. One of them can show up with your character's child. If Alistair shows up for an extended period of time, there's a 50% chance he dies. Then there's Alistair's romance in DAO, which made me so angry I thought about never playing the game again. Anders is...a whole different thing I don't really want to get into too much. I never romanced him because I didn't like his character in DA2, but a lot of people felt punished for keeping him alive in DAI because everyone seems to hate him. Not to say that the female LIs are perfect sunflowers - Merrill is a blood-mage and Isabela betrays you (usually temporarily) - but don't think it's fair to blame the grumblings about the male LIs only on the ME franchise.
I'm super-happy that straight human/elf women get so many options. I'm SUPER SUPER glad they added Solas (obviously) and Cullen. Especially Cullen, because otherwise we'd been left with borderline-ick/tragic Blackwall romance (and the Iron Bull - who is a lot of fun). I don't think it's unfair to ask that all romances have an option to end in a way that is not absolutely tragic. It's not like there's a big blinking sign when you start the romance with Solas that says "THIS ELF WILL BREAK YOUR HEART." Almost all of the LI's question the relationship, so it's not fair to say that's a warning sign. And you're locked into Solas' romance only after the worst part of it happens. By that time I was like 70 hours into the game, with one major mission left. I shouldn't have to start an entirely new play through to get a romance that won't be tragic (in the End, whenever that will be). It should be possible for me to play and get a story I'm reasonably happy with the first time. BW writers themselves have said that they don't want to write something where the player feels like they need to reload a save to have an outcome they're satisfied with. A lot of people have talked about having to spoil the game for themselves so they don't inadvertently pick the "tragic" romance, because they are so prevalent. I think that's a problem.
I dunno, I guess I get my kicks out of being involved in the romance that's most important to the plot. Which to me, has to always give it the possibility to be tragic. But I do think the important thing is that it involves player choice.
Alistair:
- don't want to get dumped? Either tell him to grow a pair, or don't make him king.
- want both of you to live? Have him impregnate a ****** with no idea what the consequences will be.
- don't want him to die in the fade? give up Hawke.
Morrigan:
- don't want her dump you? Impregnate her with potential demon spawn
- want to be with her forever? hop in the Eluvian
Anders:
- don't want to murder him? Become a pro-terrorism fugitive!
- don't want him to be left alone? sacrifice stroud! no one likes that guy anyways!
Isabella:
- don't want her to be imprisoned and re-educated by the Qunari? Duel the Arishok!
- don't want her to be left alone? sacrifice stroud! no one likes that guy anyways!
Cassandra:
- don't want her to become Divine? Don't ever listen to her advice!
We're just still waiting for that choice for Solas's romance.
