Really? I think it's great how bioware takes fan desires into account....and I agree with how they overuse tragedy sometimes, especially in the female romances, but on the other hand, I think that's going a bit far, and I seriously hope they don't cave into compromising their storytelling just because people are threatening to leave if it doesn't turn out the way they want. I mean it's one thing if you just plain don't enjoy the games, but I feel, there's a fine line between art and propaganda...and I feel always giving people what they want to see or telling fans what they want to hear is treading dangerously close to the later. So I respect when writers aren't afraid to push back on that attitude a little bit, even while being open and accommodating to what fans want to see.
I'm thinking you may be referring to me, if so let me clarify. Voicing and intention to not play the game is not a 'threat' to Bioware, I reeeeeaaaalllly love the game, but I am concerned that playing, and exposing myself to the angst is doing myself a bit of harm. Equally I think that if there is no conclusion, and no options for even a glimmer of hope in any of the endings, I would have to ask myself seriously if it might be better (for me) to kind of let Bioware go, not because they are not awesome, but because I personally can't cope with the angst, I'm not sure if I would ever be able to do that though... am an addict.
Yeah, if everything that fans claimed to be ruined actually was ruined, there'd be no game left
On happy endings and BioWare's female romances: So I'm probably opening a can of worms here, but y'all are nice people
I honestly think a lot of people were burned by ME3's ending and romances, and they're carrying that feeling of disappointment and disillusionment forward into DA:I. I'm not going to tell anyone how to feel, and I can certainly understand feeling cautious and apprehensive going forward. But IMO DA:I doesn't deserve to have the baggage of a very different game in another franchise tacked onto it. It was the first game in which female PCs actually got more choices, and two of the guys (Cullen and Iron Bull) turn out perfectly well unless you really try to sabotage the relationship. It did a great job of providing variety in the story arcs we get with LIs.
And I don't think it's BioWare's fault if they write one really tragic LI, and then players choose to romance him out of a field of SIX potential LIs for Lavellan. No more than a brightly colored fruit is deliberately tempting you to eat it, in Solas's words
You're absolutely right about ME3, that is pretty much central to my current angst, rightly or wrongly, it is not actually possible for me to discount that experience when considering DAI.
If its not Bioware's 'fault' then whose is it? (I don't really think 'fault' is appropriate term in this context though) Going into the game blind, players are not to know that picking Solas as a LI would end the way it did. Sure, it is clear from the get go that there is going to be angst, but it would have been reasonable for a player to assume it would conclude with closure at the very least. I don't really think it would be fair to say 'tough, you picked the wrong guy' The choices are only relevant for multiple PTs as players pick the character that suits their PC, and that might only be one of them. As a player who always plays elven characters first when there's a choice, and who feels it is a central pillar of their characters to only romance elves, Solas was the only option... okay, there's Sera, but I do play straight characters also, and even if I didn't, she's so obnoxious I don't think I could put a PC through that.
I hear you
I picked DAI to cheer me up with some really sad RL **** (my son is very ill) and ... god damn it Bioware you did it to me again. hould have known better than to romance a mage.
Still on team optimism, if only because I want to believe Bioware would not do Anders, Thane and Solas all on a row to it's fans.. Could they ?
I'm so sorry to hear this, I hope that he will get well soon and send all my positive wishes to you both.
Other thoughts: Some have mentioned when talking about post game DLC that some may not have many companions left, but is it not the case that we potentially have Morrigan, Cullen and Leliana on standby? Is it possible to lose Cassandra any way aside from her becoming Divine? I Know Cullen is concerned about his ability but it would be pretty nice to have them all as companions in DLC.
