I'm totally with you.  It's complete and utter bullshit that not only do we have to wait that long, but we may not get it at all and even if we do, we have to pay for it again!

New time poster here. I imagine this question has been asked here before, but I can't scroll through over 1,000+ pages to find the answer. My next playthrough will involve a Solas romance, but I've been wondering what the stated reason is for Solas being a female-elf only romance?

 

My first playthough was a female elf who romanced Cullen, but I didn't really see him being all that into elves. There *are* some questions about whether he really sees elves as his people. I'm just confused. Perhaps someone here can answer? Thanks.  

 

Solas is deeply invested Elvhen culture, meaning the ancient elves. Modern elves have lost much of what they once were, but the Dalish are at least trying to preserve their history (too bad they're doing a terrible job). So I think he is angry with the Dalish for twisting their history, and a bit dismissive of the city elves who have lost sight of it almost entirely. So he makes it seem like his People are the ancient elves. Perhaps he would have a higher opinion of modern elves if he was able to restore them to their former glory somehow. Either way, I think non-elves aren't really on his radar.

 

From a writing standpoint, I think Solas's true identity would have the greatest impact on an elf, so it makes sense for them to write his romance this way.

I think the stinger is what makes the wait for more so unbearable.  I've been obsessive about BioWare games since KOTOR (Yes I know I am a heathen for not playing BG).  I've never felt like I was going to explode if I didn't get more content NOW, before.

That's exactly how I feel about it. I keep checking the forums every day actually more often on a slight chance of hearing some news about a DLC or smth, even though I know it's way too early. XD

Wasn't it because if elf marry with a human, their baby will look like 100% humans (Bioware genetics, lol) so elves decided to avoid humans ? I'm pretty sure I read it in the wiki about elves lore. So since Solas want to "save" his kin may want to avoid that it become extinct.

Solas might not actually know about that. He probably does, but it's implied that he pretty much only just woke up from uthenara and found that the world went batty. Orb stolen, elves crushed. There were probably humans encountered in ancient Arlathan, but I'll bet it wasn't common for an elf to have babies with a human.

I don't think children were anything he was even thinking about.  According to Weekes, he broke it off because he would be "betraying himself".  He fell in love hard and fast and almost derailed his own goals.

Some games have a longer development cycle than others, and big RPGs take longer than action games, generally speaking.  It's been, what?  Since 2010, 2011 when Skyrim came out?  And that has less plot and less characterization than Dragon Age: Inquisition, but yet we have yet to hear a peep about the next Elder Scrolls game.

 

I've waited five years for novels before.

 

I think people forget the amount of work that has to be put into a game for it to be released to the public.  Four years is not too long; I would expect the next game will be out in more like 2-3 years now that they have a grasp of the Frostbite Engine.  But it will be longer than a year, for sure.

Whoa whoa whoa, I never said I expected the next full on game in less than 3 or 4 years. That would be insane. I'm not that crazy haha. I have family members who work in the industry (one even works for EA) and I am fully aware of the massive effort that goes into making a triple a game like Dragon Age. I am constantly astounded with how amazing DAI is with how little time they took to make it (the water gets me every time guys). 

 

I only said that I need some kind of closure, in DLC, before the next game. It doesn't even have to be a full complete closure of the Solas story!  I just need SOMETHING. Even if it's just like "And Lavellan is on her way to find Solas"  DONE. I just need something before the next game. That's all I meant, and since I do know a little about the industry, it's very likely that some (if not a majority) of the DLC content is completed or on its way to being completed as we speak. 

 

And seriously, books are not the same as video games. I have a large library, I love books just as much as any reader, but it's not the same. I didn't create the characters, I didn't make their choices, and the outcome of the story does not rely upon the choices I made while reading the book. Games require more of a personal investment, and it's what makes RPGs like Dragon Age so great. I've waited several years for books I love as well...but it's not a really equal comparison.

 

Basically, all I'm saying is give me a little something something in the DLC over the next year or so to keep me invested in the Solas x Lavellan story. That's all I want, and that's all I need to stay invested in the game. I can be reasonable when the brainmeats are working right.

Hrmmmm.  It's funny, the first time in my life I ever read fan fiction was after this game.  I blame Solas.  (Please don't anyone who writes fanfic feel offended by that.  There's just never been a situation where I felt the need to seek it out.  I appreciate the effort and time you all put into what you do.)

Oh right you wanted suggestions.  I guess whatever you feel you NEED to get out.  The only thing that really makes or breaks it for me is the characterization of Solas.  He's gotta be so ridiculously hard to get right.  The fics that I've read that I've enjoyed the most have been Crystal White by Brekalor, the beautiful story that Cheerios789 did, I apologize so much for forgetting the name.  Brass_Buckle's post game story is wonderful as well.  I don't know if you've seen any of those, but that's a good indication for what I've found enjoyable.

After listening to that interview, I went and made some gifs of the final romance scene.

 

Here's the first part, when he's talking about giving Lavellan a gift to show her how much she means to him.

 

Then you commit to the romance, and when it comes time to actually tell her, he... falters.

 

I keep thinking about the fact that he almost told her the truth.

XD Thank you for your suggestion! I will have to check those stories out, but I will probably skim them more than anything. I want my own imagination to guide me not what someone already created; and I agree about Solas being a difficult character to portray...it will be interesting.

*Gasps* I just found the theme for my story with your idea! I will post a video of the song that will hopefully bring it across. That is a good idea, but I am also thinking about maybe a one-shot or a three part story with a young Solas. We know he used to be rather wild back when he was younger so that could be fun to write. I don't think a lot of people would had made a story like that...then again I could be very wrong.
