The way I understood it, he just... how do you put it... chickened out at the last moment? He was prolly afraid Lav wouldn't trust him anymore afterwards (remember his "But losing you..." line from his second romance scene?). But he couldn't continue to hide his identity and plans forever, as well, so he kind of went for a preemptive strike and ended it himself instead of waiting for her to find out and (probably) breaking it off on her own. It was a bit of a selfish thing to do; he knows that she still loves him, and while they cannot be together atm, he didn't lose her love - which could have happened if he told her the truth.

He assumes what will be and (due to his credit and cleverness) is so often correct that he doesn't always realize when he might not be.

He very specifically says in one of the 3rd romance reply options, that you won't forgive him. Or something to that effect.

I'm at the Temple of Mythal with my Solas' Lavellan. Should I drink from the well or not?

 

I'd say for a  first playthrough, go with no. There's a dialogue bug where Solas is supposed to say something more interesting than "No :|" if you're in a romance, but it doesn't actually trigger. There's a reaction to drinking from the well that seems reaaally weird because it lacks context.

 

It doesn't affect anything too major, but it's mostly jarring. I'd actually save right before and play through each choice to see which one you like better. Just keep in mind the bug when talking to him after.

It's not a bug, the dialogue doesn't exist. Patrick Weekes intended to write something to be there and didn't.

Damn, really? I was always under the impression that it was there, just not coded in to properly fire. That sucks. I was hoping for a future patch to fix it. :/

I interpret it in similar way, since after he chickened out the next thought of him was to give up his plan and just stay with Lavellan. He cares for her so much that he dared not take the risk of telling Lavellan the truth and face......well, any negative reaction she might have.
