Solas; "Iron Bull, how do you people put on shirts?"
"Well, it doesn't want for sand."

I tend to follow this line of thought, built off several conversations and a bit of reading:
Fen'harel was one of the Elvhen. So were those referred to as 'gods' now days. However, what would distinguish magical immortal royalty from a god? I think they were just the nobility of a time when magic took centuries to weave.
There were no roads because of the network of eluvians...and some of that 'royalty' held cities in places OTHER than the world we know, because the eluvians could travel across such barriers.
Fen'harel rebelled to free the people (Viva la revolution) ... and his means of doing so was to cut off transportation, this actually trapped the people in their respective cities because ...no roads...and with no eluvians, no way in or out.
It's possible the way we KNOW the fade now was a consequence of this, but not, perhaps, the fact that the fade may have always existed in some form.
Perhaps it was his intent, not to free the enslaved elves, but to free the enslaved beings we now call spirits? There are far more questions than these. But these are the immediate thoughts I've pondered for my own happy writing. ;} And also for when I was constructing my DA RPG campaign for friends.
I don't think Fen'Harel cut off the eluvians. It's heavily implied in TME and Well-drinking-no-Kieran Morrigan scenes that the elves did that to protect themselves from attack during civil war. If he did cut them off, I think it may only have been after things started to crumble, but I tend to think he did something earlier and went to sleep since things went south pretty quickly after the eluvian network was closed. I don't see him watching that rapid decline and not feeling like he needed to get involved somehow.

Here's what I think re: the Veil. The Fade and the real world have always been physically separate. Solas seems surprised/amazed to be physically in the Veil if you bring him along for Here Lies the Abyss - as if he has not been there before. It seems like the Fade - or something like it - existed since before the fall of Arlathan since the Crossroads are created as a place very near to the Fade. Why would the eluvians be necessary at all if someone could walk through the Fade itself, since doing that would negate distance and time anyway? But I think the perceived difference between the RW and the Fade was very slim. I think it was possible for spirits to come from the Fade without the difficulty that seems to be there today, and I think that the elves were able to manipulate the real world in ways that the current people of Thedas could not dream of. Solas has a banter with Viv about how her conception of magic cripples her abilities. She believes magic works in one way and so it does, but believing that it can work in other ways would mean she could do more with her powers.
I just really like the idea that the Veil isn't like a physical thing. Like it's a side-effect of something that influences the Fade or the Real World... not really sure what I'm getting at.
I'm starting to wonder if it's the Elven Creators who were trying to bring down the Veil, and that's the first magical OOPS that started this whole thing. And the corrupted lyrium was the byproduct of doing such an experiment.
We know lyrium is alive... I wonder if, instead of using blood like Tevinter mages do, that the ancient elves used lyrium as... holy crap. Every mage in Thedas uses lyrium! And it's the blood of... the earth? A Titan-like race? It has to be some other race. Oh man this is horrible. I'm sorry I went there. ![]()

I would agree. I think whatever he did to seal the elven gods sapped his strength to the point that the only thing he could do was find a 'safe' place to slumber, or, one of the gods put him to sleep and he had no control over what happened.

You can. Anyone can wear other armors, you just have to use the right materials. It's how my night enchanter wears that pretty medium armor. She refuses to wear shem clothing any longer than necessary. Even if that means suicide run through the Hissing Wastes at level 11.

Does Solas ever talk about lyrium? I think of lyrium as really connected to the dwarves, and that it was what allowed them to participate in whatever kind of world was happening during the time of Elvhenan. Or it birthed them. I'm not really sure. There are a lot of holes in the dwarven lore. I should hang around the dwarf thread and see what they have to say.
But..I could see the gods trying to merge the physical world and the physical Fade and that being...catastrophic. Or trying to merge the Abyss and the Beyond, since the Abyss is where the Blight seems to come from.

Maybe you saw this on the elf lifespan thread, but I was reminded of this strange codex from The Black Emporium in DA2. One of the coded lines reads "Two shadowed spheres among stars... an eclipse as Fen'Harel stirred."
I was trying to think of any known eclipses we've had in the DA universe? Couldn't come up with anything. The book is supposedly pre-Tevinter but will randomly create new pages with pictures and words. The picture on that page is the spheres, and the bit about an eclipse is the coded message that accompanies it. I guess this suggests that Fen'Harel was waking up during DA2 game time. Maybe the eclipse is the Blight blocking the sun. I wonder where he was? Sundermount?

I knew that was a real line! Ok. So, a while back there was a really interesting post on reddit:
To give some context, my boyfriend does not play the Dragon Age series, but he does attempt listening to my wild rants. One day, after showing him the cutscene where the Inquisitor first meets Corypheus at Haven, he asks me about the metal-looking ball.
What ball?
The one that Corpheus uses to try and remove the Inquisitor’s anchor, of course. The orb that destroyed the Conclave. That set the world down a path of fire and destruction and far too many demons. Yes, the orb. Foci, Solas calls it. “Foci?” my boyfriend asks. Yes, foci.
“So where’s the other one?”
All knowing, I dismiss the theory with the wave of my hand. There’s only one orb, of course, a powerful relic tied to the ancient Elvhen gods. I mean, Solas was devastated when the ‘foci’ was destroyed.
“There’s always two focus points in an ellipse.”
Math stuff. He tries again, in Dragon Age speak. “The Breach. Ellipse-shaped, right? Foci help define an ellipse.” In other words, if Solas’ orb played a role in creating the Breach, there should be another orb. Foci, the plural of focus.
Wait. Wait. What if – and I’m going out on a limb, here – what if there really were two orbs? One dedicated to Mythal, and the other Fen’Harel? It changes the context of DA:I’s backstory, because it would mean that Fen’Harel wasn’t the sole architect.
TLDR: Two focus points, ‘foci’, required to form an ellipse. The Breach is an ellipse, and our known focus point, the Elvhen relic, is destroyed. There’s a second relic, but to whom does it belong?

Dragon Age Origins runs on the Eclipse Engine. That's all I got.
I think Solas was sleeping somewhere safer than Sundermount (that didn't really make sense but alliteration). Anyway I suspect he was closer to Arlathan, or wherever he's headed to now. I think he just followed Cory to Ferelden because Cory needed to do his stuff at the temple of the Urn.

My gut feeling is that the "eclipse" is representing an overlapping of the Fade and the real world.

There are multiple Foci. Solas implies that the gods used them to channel their power, so I'd assume all of the elven gods have them.

Well I like it! You have my support.....*hugs* We can hope! I mean, we loved him even before we knew who he was. So the Dread Wolf part, while powerful and sexy, was not the part Lavellan actually knew. I mean the whole Doctor thing was he was the man without the Doctor part. So it's everything that he is, just without the power part. Curious if that would change him from being a mage or not....Hmmm, would be great for a warrior or rogue Lavellan to teach him how life works without magic if he didn't already know.
