Solavellan is like an unfinished rom-com in a way...without the com part.
They have a 'meet cute'. In an outrageous situation he suddenly grabs her hand and closes the rift. Then there's the fact that she's Dalish which is a point of conflict in the prologue banter and during the first conversation.
Like most rom-com couples the plot forces them to continue interacting. They have a world to save, and all, and it's not like the only Fade expert can just walk away.
Eventually Solas and Lavellan come together. He's hesitant and tries to deny the relationship for as long as he can like at least one pair in a rom-com couple has to do, but eventually they get together. The scene at the Winter Palace is basically their romance montage (it really isn't).
Then there's that plot point that's keeping them apart. Solas is Fen'Harel and has his duty. No matter how much he wants to ignore these things and be with her he can't. So the relationship ends.
Then, in typical rom-com fashion, one member of the main pair has to make their exit. In this case Solas leaves at the end of the game to do what Solas has to do. This is where the game ends, and thus the rom-com like situation ends as well.
What we need to bring this thing into full rom-com territory is a chase. The love interest always chases after the person who leaves. It's just how rom-coms work. Lavellan needs to chase after ancient boyfriend.
Then there would need to be a grand declaration of love. Lavellan would say something like "I can't just let you walk away. I really do believe in us. You don't have to be alone because I love you and I'll stay by your side forever." For some reason Solas would stand there and listen to the declaration and be moved by it.
Finally the ending. Solas would agree to allow Lavellan to remain by his side and they would share this obnoxiously long kiss no matter who was watching them (they could be in the middle of Val Royeaux and not care) and they would run off into the sunset/Eluvian/Fade/etc. together to continue their beautiful relationship.
I'll be going to the doctor to get a firm dose of reality now.
