Were you physically attracted to him when you first saw him (in-game or pre-game) or did you gradually warmed up to his looks?
I was! I find Solas to be very striking, and I love his angular features. I mean...those cheekbones. *noms*
I liked him from the concept art and liked him in the German magazine picture. Everyone else was like ewww, bald, I hope he isn't a LI for my demographic. I was like "Bioware please let him be available to ladies."
Well, now I actually like him bald. Kind of funny how I can accept bald dudes now and think it's sexy. I was all about the long hair before.

As for Solas' appearance. I will admit when I saw pictures originally he didn't do anything for me. It was mostly the bald head. But I've always been someone that needs to see personality, and a character in motion before attraction will kick in.
As a straight male I wasn't ever considering him for his appearance. But with his backstory I wanted to romance him as my female dalish keeper in training, which turned out AMAZING in the game.
Question for everyone:
If Solas had told her the truth, about why he couldn't stay, couldn't be with her....what would your Lavellan do?
Politically? Romance/emotionally? Would she tell other? Keep the secret? I'm curious what people think.
Mine would understand, but move forward. She would seek to restore Elven society, or at least dispel some of the myths and inaccuracies held by the dalish, and she would be open to learning and working with Solas in the future.....but she would understand their romance was over (except for the occasional fade romp perhaps)
I don't think she would tell anyone else...yet...maybe Varric. I don't think she would love another either.
For my Lavellan what solas told her would be surprising but not totally beyond her expectations. I mean, she did catch all the odds and hints Solas leaked. And she'd been made into Herald of Andrastate, got involved into political games to learn how easily fact can be distorted, manipulated. So if the belief and history Dalish holds is mostly not true, it's not that hard to accept.
But my Lavellan will certainly have problem with Solas lying to her, causing all the trouble, and she'd wonder if he is merely using her...maybe not the whole time, but at the beginning?
Regarding the thing he's going to do...what my Lavellan would do still largely depends on what is his plan. But she'd probably act like "you can't just throw me into the whole mess and expect me to leave, pretending nothing happened"
Whatever he want to do, she won't let go so easily, she'd tell him that she will interfere, one way or another.
If Solas's plan is truly beyond her ability to get involved, she'd at least makes it clear that their issues are not settled yet, she'd keep an eye and wait until Solas finish his work.
I just noticed that the youtuber who's been chronicling all the companion disapproval conversations uploaded an elf-specific disapproval dialogue with Solas where you can hear the Inquisitor actually speaking Elven:
I gotta say, it's still really unclear to me how much of this language the Inquisitor canonically knows. On the one hand, they seem to be capable of holding at least short conversations; on the other, they also have to get pretty much every elven inscription in the game translated by someone else, and they seem to periodically forget they know any at all when other people are speaking it. Difficult to untangle how much of that is just default dialogue originally written for a human Inquisitor, and how much is actually meant to represent the state of the lore re: the Dalish and the elven language.
edit: Also, the Inquisitor in this video totally looks like the dude version of my mage. Weird. XD

Personally I don't really take a character's hotness into account when picking my favorite romance plot, so it just wasn't important to me. I do think his character design is excellent in that it's distinctive and conveys a lot about what kind of personality he is, and thought it was interesting that the devs decided to make a character who wasn't conventionally "hot" a love interest. Which is pretty much the same as what I think after having played the game.
That said, I am married to a bald intellectual who hates baggy pants, so perhaps I have more of a "type" than I'm aware of. 
To be honest I'm a little surprised people noticed the bald when he was wearing such tight pants.
Before release I spent most of my time in Scuttlebutt and the Twitter thread. I missed out on all of the talk this summer (in this thread). And then I put myself on a blackout after the spoilers were surfacing for achievements and the book.
I was trying to keep myself in the dark as much as possible before playing. So I only stuck around long enough for all of the character announcements. And I was holding on to hope for Varric as a LI to the last possible second. Using only the little blurbs and screenshots to go by I was reserving judgment until I played the game. I know there's a lot of folks that know before they've even picked up the game, who they are going to romance. I was fairly certain that if no one's personality was doing it for me I was gonna go the eye candy route with Cullen. I figured it was going to be Solas because he seemed to be mysterious. And it's always the quiet ones!
I will say though that there's something about Solas in motion.

To be honest? I got spoiled by DA male elven companions with great hair (Zevran and Fenris), and the only notable bald male elf in the franchise so far was Zathrien, so it was kind of a rude shock to see the next DA male elven companion being bald. Not only that, but plainly dressed!
I remember looking at him (long before the game came out) and thinking, "Great, a bald elven Spock." Then I remembered I love Spock because he is so calm and logical, so I thought, "Well, maybe his personality will attract me." Boy was I right!
His looks have grown on me. I do love how smooth and cool he is, both in physical appearance and overall demeanor. I also love his high cheekbones, intense grey eyes, and kind smile. And I love the way his eyes light up when he smiles. "When he smiles..."

Just want to add to this (though I'm no elven specialist so take it with a grain of salt)
I think eva might mean free since revas means freedom and it contains eva.
Masula contains ma (as in my/mine/you) and su as in happen. Also sula is in sulahn which means sing, and sulahn'nehn which means joy (though I think it's closer to ecstatic or to 'sing in happiness' since the wiki also lists just nehn as joy, so put two and two together...)
Duthenas contains uth as in long/forever/eternal and then as in awake/alert.
So a possible translation might be: I am forever surprised your spirit's trapped yet you sing with a free heart.

Yeah, so I wasn't physically attracted to the concept art at all. He looked, I don't know...mean? Kind of? He looks much better in game. But even so, I still wasn't super into it until THE VOICE. I mean, for me, it is all about Gareth David-Lloyd's performance. Guy deserves some kind of award for getting people so hot and bothered. The first time Solas spoke I was pretty much swooning for that voice...it's just so lyrical and those words sound so good in my ears. It's kind of weird, maybe, to be physically attracted to the sound of someone's voice...but yeah, everything just kind of fell into place after that.
My theory which has some programming knowledge but may have a healthy dose of wishful thinking:
They were going to make a scene where Solas returns at game end and Quizzy retires to her room and goes to her balcony:
supporting the theory:
- most of the other LI have a scene there
- would give closure to Solas arc
- the portion of code is in every single talktable on the game. Hence important
- they had no time to finish stuff on other romances, I imagine the scene got cut because they had no time to animate it
- the dialog is very short and is only shown at Skyhold's file (the "gasp") which would be the proper place for it. and a short dialog would indicate lack of time to do much more
- All other LI have a closure of sorts, no other LI has a "re-enable" flag, not even Blackwall
against the theory
- I'm a solas obsessed fan girl and see rosy Solas scenarios everywhere
- No mention of it by Weekes or Gaider or Bioware
- We haven't found any other corroborating evidence yet

The fact that it appears on all the talktables is unusual. We don't! I wonder if they had him in the Lion's Helmet to hide who it was. There are quite a few scenes in the trailers that don't appear in-game.

I had to warm up to him. I had precisely zero interest in him when I started playing the game. And then I heard his voice and I swooned a little. Then he started talking about the Fade and I was curious. The "wake up" line was the final bit to firmly reel me in. Now, I find him probably the most attractive DAI character.

Initially for me he kind of just fadedget it? into the background. Like yeah he was bald & dressed like that guy on the corner of my street that talks to his pepsi bottle. In the defense of everyone who was not initially attracted to him because bald, balding can be hereditary so naturally some people will not be sexually attracted to someone with unfavorable genes that can be passed onto their children. We're not shallow its science
I accidentally lost my tabs. I lost that one fanfic where they use time travel to make fen'harel come and it was super hot and everyone responed with "this is so hot" gifs.

I love how his eyes look during the romance scenes. In the last one, they were dark and looked so loving and gentle. *incoherent babbling*
I was not attracted to Solas before I got the game. I knew nothing about him other than him being an elf mage. I decided to romance him since I always make a female elf first and I thought it would be nice of her to romance one of her own kind. I fell in love with Solas after Lavellan asked if Varric was from the chantry. That smile..that laugh..his voice. It was all over from there.
I'm already pessimistic but I wouldn't have developed my awesome humor without it. Making light of things is my favorite activity. You think of the worst thing that could happen and when it happens, it's never as bad as you thought it would be so you feel content with the result. If there is ever a worst case when it does happen, there will be no surprises.
How do optimists react to situations that aren't as they hoped? I feel it happens pretty often and they are more likely to feel disappointment.
Is a bummer of course but optimism is a choice to never let yourself be defeated by setbacks. They won't put you down and you will trust things will work, no matter the number of times things don't work out. Is an act of defiance, to me.
In my view if you let yourself be sad even before you know the outcome, you have already been defeated. You already let the world and the bad jerks win. You might stay safe but that is because you already put the jail bars around yourself and you can never get out and be free if you don't challenge your bad expectations.
But ya, it isn't easy to be defiant and dare to expect good, not disappointment. a lot safer to be disappointed ahead of time.
