Ok ok ok
Since everybody said how they felt about Solas (attracted at first sight or grown to love)..
I'd say I grew to love him, but not gradually. I made a graph of love through time.
[wonderful chart]
First playthrough I was a dwarf, I barely knew anything about the companions (didn't want to spoil the plot), I only knew he's a bald elf and can only be romanced by elves. To be honest, I wasn't even sure I'd go for him at any point since I don't like playing elves. I wasn't attracted to him, but I'm not attracted to people if I only know how they look.
Then.. The "is that a serious question" and I got butterflies.
I took him everywhere, my character romanced Blackwall but went to speak with Solas more than with Blackwall (and I thought Blackwall would be awesome because of BEARD but he wasn't very awesome). My poor dwarf kept yelling in her chambers "WHY WAS I BORN A DWARF, I WANT TO BE AN ELF".
I managed to finish the first playthrough with her (even though I wanted to quit and create an elf) and after he left at the end I was HEARTBROKEN. After the stinger I understood that beyond being adorkable his romance will closely related to the plot, so I made a female elf immediately after Skyhold reloaded.
By the way - this graph depicts how I felt about him through the first PT with the dwarf.
When I romanced him I was already obsessive.
That's a really great (and sad) story. I'm sorry for your heartbroken dwarven lass. =(
While my playthrough's order has been the opposite (elven woman who romanced him first, dwarven woman after), I'm actually having a rather similar experience. That is, my dwarven gal liked him much more strongly, much more quickly than my elven gal did. She found him handsome, intriguing and alluring right away, and started making plans to woo him - which just made me sad knowing she'll never do it. =(
I guess while we're on the subject of "how long did it take you to warm up to him (if you're in that category)" ...
While I obsessively read up on everything DAI related before opening (because I'm impulsive, Id-driven, and the kind ruin my dinner with snacks and sweets beforehand), I didn't read up on Solas because, honestly, in some ways he seemed the least interesting. I figured if there was more to him than met the eye, I would discover it in the game instead of reading ahead like I did for the others. (Ironically my shallow lack of initial interest made me appreciate him all the more when I finally started playing.)
I was also a little on the fence on who to romance at the time. I thought I'd want to romance Sera at the time because I'd been wanting a lesbian elven couple since Linu La'neral from Neverwinter Nights. (Although Linu wasn't officially available for women, her lines were very affectionate, so I headcanoned that my elven ranger ran off with the sweet elven cleric. Merrill would have been perfect, if only the DA2 PC wasn't forced to be human! >< ) When BioWare announced Sera being available to women, I was a bit excited... Until they revealed that "she's not your typical elf" because she doesn't like nature or elvy things. Then I started to feel nervous. Then Solas was revealed to be available for elven women alone (intriguing...) but that he "wants to prove he's not just another elf."
"Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu-!!"
So I ended up thinking, "Assuming they don't despise elves, I'm going to romance one of these two with my Dalish (and Iron Bull with my dwarf and Josephine with my Vashoth), depending on which personality is more attractive and/or which one hates elves less." Solas charmed and intrigued my Keeper's First, with his politeness and calming demeanor and knowledge of the Fade. The more she talked to him, the more she grew to like him, and the more addicted she became to learning his views, knowledge, and experiences.
I (as the player) remained a little on the fence though, until Lavellan finally went to Val Royeaux and actually met Sera. Not to disparage her, but... Sera being so random, out there, in-your-face, and disappointed to see that my Inquisitor was an elf (*sneers* "You're not too elfy, are you?"), my Inquisitor just kind of stared wide-eyed and I thought, "... WOW! Okay, Solas it is! By a landslide!"
No regrets.
