I wonder if "soulless"  is a word relating to "no Fade connection." All living things dream, have their souls pass into the Fade, or can be conscious in the Fade itself. Everything except dwarves and (maybe) whatever the Titans were.

I never heard that! He never said anything when I died. =/ Wonder if that's part of the banter bug too?

I've never heard it either. In fact,Tiger Festival somehow accidentally launched herself into the abyss on the edge of the Western Approach a few times during my last bandit fight, so I had the opportunity to listen for Solas's reaction. Sadly, all I got was "Nooooo!" and "NO! Hold on!"

It did seem to be only him stressing out over it, though. Bull and Cole didn't seem to notice at all.

Yep, pretty sure this is the intended meaning.  Dwarves "return to the Stone" instead.  Probably related to this conversation with Dagna, but I'm still on shaky ground about connections between lyrium, the reincarnation of souls, and the fade:

Inquisitor : So tranquil and dwarves are linked to lyrium, but also not linked ?
Dagna : Like the lyrium needs to flow, but if you're part of it, it takes you with it. so you can't be part of it. That makes me sad. I'm not sure why. It seems like we should be part of it. Whatever "it" is.
Dagna : Or maybe we're the ones who make it happen ? Whatever "it" is ?
Dagna : You know what's frustrating ? Answers that aren't answers. Bleah.

Yeah.  You can say that again, Dags.

Somebody around here had a lyrium-is-concentrated-souls theory, which would be an interesting connection, but I can't dig it up.  Does that sound familiar to anyone?

(Crap crap, sorry crap about all this theory spam- it built up in my system a bit.  Anyone have a good, distracting fic to recommend?)

Er... Titans? It seems I've missed a whole lot of crazy theories. Must search through the thread...

Soooo In answer to number 2 there, I've got something for you that I stumbled upon during the post-prologue bit before heading into the War Room of the Chantry...

Here are screen shots.
Here is the wiki link to the Codex entry itself, "Children of Andraste."

TL;DR: Andraste was born the same year as the defeat of Dumat. Andraste had "five" children with her husband Maferath. Three boys via a concubine during her earlier life, and later, two girls she birthed herself with Maferath despite beliefs she was barren. So children by Andraste? Two. Only girls.

The line of the first daughter, Ebris, ends swiftly with both her and her daughter dying a month apart. The second daughter, Vivial, goes into self-imposed exile before the Exalted March with her consort Regulan and then into full hiding following the murder of Andraste. Vivial likewise has... only daughters and their records get lost given all the marrying into other families and losing their names in the process.

Likely situation? Andraste passed on Dumat/Mythal's godhood to Vivial prior to her murder - either before the Exalted March or after before her betrayal. Vivial did the same with one of her daughters, culminating in Flemeth at some point. As we know now from the Developer Notes, Flemeth's goal is now to pass her Godhood on to Morrigan.

EDIT: Top of the page Solas! Blatantly showing you my SUPER in progress sketches for a Solavellan Tarot Card.
Spoiler

I have been suspecting the same thing but I have not said anything yet. Andraste had bad dreams as a child. Keiren also had bad dreams and he also had a god soul.

I don't know for sure if there are any codex entries, but Kieran mentions that dwarves are weird without their Titans, or something to that effect.

I can't get over how much speculation you can get out of all of this. Its too much fun.

World pillars are a very interesting concept. There's also the fact that Solas, the Warden, Hawke and potentially even the Architect are all moving west. All of this is somehow connected. I have a feeling killing all of the old gods may be disastrous for Thedas. Possibly even killing it.

[ Also that tarot sketch is amazing! I am out of likes. Why do I like so much? ]

Uh, one more random thought before I get back to grinding through a weeks' worth of fic, theory, and tears:

One of the things that kept me from adopting the theory that the blight was directed by an entity whose goal was assimilation/domination of sentient life on Thedas was that blights ever end.  If the song/hive mind was directed by a non-Archdemon Something (something awake and aware enough to have called Tevinter priests and warped the Andrastean religion) why would attacks on the surface be limited to times when a blighted Old God/Archdemon was active?

I can think of two possibilities, and they're not necessarily mutually exclusive.

1) For the Big Bad to be released, the Dwarves have to go first.  My theories on 'why' are still half-baked.  In a way, I think the Dwarvish race might function a bit like an immune system for the Stone.  Carving away the bad parts, beating back the physical infection, with Kal'Shirok dwarves possibly working like T-cells, removing the blight from the Earth's blood directly.  I'm not sure how much I like the image, but it kind of fits.   In that mindset, my brain does weird twitchy stuff when I read things like this:

The "witless, soulless" part is obviously meant to trigger our "gotta be darkspawn" detector, but I think that might be a misdirect.  Consider instead:

Pillars of the Earth = Titans (possible keys to Big Bad's imprisonment)  Workers = Dwarves.  Blossom = blight.

I think it's safe to assume the original Dwarves- whatever they were before they lost/forgot their original purpose- were much different from what they are now.  Further assume this progression is a trajectory- that they're growing further and further away from being Servants of the Stone until you have someone like Varric, a surfacer who can't hear the Stone at all and is, in a meta sense at least, practically a Dwarven mage. (In so far as being a writer is a bit like dreaming while awake.  Crafting and shaping worlds that aren't, but could be, etc, etc. The fade-y connections are all over the place in his dialog with Cole.)

Anyway!  Moving backward in time and downward in space from something like Varric, you lose more of the Dwarf-as-individual, and gain more Dwarf-as-Stone-song-driven weapon/tool.  Combine this with Dagna's crazy experience after the resolution of "The Archanist and the Fade", and you have the Dwarvish race as a networked hive mind, connected by blue lyrium.  Built, perhaps, to counter the blighted red one and maintain the integrity of the Big Bad's prison.

Ugh.  Totally weak theory.  I don't like it yet, but there you have it.

2)  Surfacers think of blights as Darkspawn attacks... but what if they aren't?  Given what we think we know about the Big Bad, when there's no competing Song from an Archdemon, wouldn't it make more sense for the Darkspawn horde to be digging down?  The Old Gods, maddened as they are with blight and pain, have just enough them left when they wake for the thought "UP", dragging what they can control to the surface, away from the Big Bad's objectives.  So... not an attack.  Just a temporary setback, a roadbump slowing down the Big Bad's plan to free himself to rule over an enslaved and blighted world.

If so, nice job again there, Wardens.   =w=

Hmmm. Dwarves do not dream, do not have magical abilities.

"Then the Maker said:

To you, my second-born, I grant this gift:
In your heart shall burn
An unquenchable flame
All-consuming, and never satisfied.
From the Fade I crafted you,
And to the Fade you shall return
Each night in dreams
That you may always remember me."

"The children that populated this new realm had the spark of the divine within them, which pleased the Maker; according to the Chantry, the dwarves were not among His creations."

I think there might be something to dwarves = soulless

Morrigan only has a kid (Kieran) if you complete the Dark Ritual, OR, you romanced her with a male Warden.

He only has the Old God soul, obviously, if you complete the Dark Ritual.

I've been testing. For science. Plus I'm on nightmare run and die A LOT.

I get the "No! Hold on!" And "Fenhidis!" (Spelling?) Fenris' Tevinter curse, I think?

So... I just got the vallaslin scene with my elfquisitor.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I almost cried as much as when Grunt's almost death made me a total wreck, except in a good way. I cannot believe how beautiful that scene was. Bioware...!!! <3

Just bittersweet perfection.

And to think I was sad Solas didn't get as much content as other romances (played Blackwall's, Bull's and Cassandra's so far). But that scene...!!! Wow. DA:I is meant to be played as a female elf Solasmancer. Just had to come here and share my fan-freakout. Did I put enough exclamation marks in this post?

Ar vhenan elvhen sulahn'nehn! <3

I'm so glad you enjoyed that scene! I felt very similarly. Though I romanced Solas on my first playthrough, I was also sad that there wasn't more romance content and suspected there wasn't as much as others was because he was added after the devs were given more time. But once that scene rolled around, it more than made up for it. The whole scene was so sad, so beautiful, and so well-done. Even if other romances are given more happy moments and more content, the Solas romance seems so perfect from a story standpoint.

A thought. If killing all of the old gods may be disastrous for Thedas, possibly even killing it, isn't that the same thought one might have about killing something called "The Pillars of the Earth?" Perhaps those attempting to destroy those pillars are similar to those weird group of Seekers who hope to rebirth the world by destroying it? Maybe they're part of a time-old cult?

EDIT: Thank you! Plan is to have Lavellan painted on the inside of his cloak. But when I drew it, she had her bow drawn and it pointed at his heart and the irony of her as a hunter and him as a wolf slayed me and I'm considering other options. THERE MUST have been a story telling reason to have swapped his six-eyed black wolf into a white one if you romanced him vs did not AND the break-up = romance lock. It may honestly be the only way to reason with him in a future DLC into choosing a different path.

Yeah! I think that is very possible. Either the old gods themselves are the 'pillars of the earth' or they are actually connected to them. Still not quite certain how it all fits with the elven pantheon, since there's such a strong overlap between the two that it can't just be coincidental. Soo much speculation. I think we'll see more of that cult in the future. I doubt it was developed just for Cassandra's sidequest.

As for the tarot- that sounds like an awesome idea! I really love the linework so far. I also agree as far as the black wolf/white wolf goes. Its interesting that this pairing is also reflected in game. The shrines of Fen'Harel that have the howling wolves are of a black wolf and a white wolf howling together. Definitely keep us updated! I'm starting to feel like a lazy artist with all these awesome pieces being developed.

Yep, pretty sure this is the intended meaning.  Dwarves "return to the stone" instead.  Probably related to this conversation with Dagna, but I'm still on shaky ground about a direct connection between lyrium, reincarnation of souls, and the fade:

It seems drinking Lyrium makes templar able to reinforce reality (something going against the Fade having an effect on Thedas.)

We know Cassandra from being made tranquil (cut from the fade) then cured by a spirit is also able to reinforce reality.

The dwarves born from the "Stone" (I guess it's lyrium ) have no access to the Fade.

I think it's a case of two different type of magic , Lyrium is magic afterall but it's magic being solid.Like a piece of magic you can take in your hand. You can't do that with the Fade .

It's possible it's the dwarves Fade , their souls goes back to it afterall.Don't even want to think about it being "alive".

Anyway the dwarves do have souls , it's 100% sure .They are not soulless.

Anyway Dagna doesn't make any sense , people linked through the fade are obviously all tied to it because it's something related to your thought and mind .Like a collective consciouness.

If the Dwarves are linked to a solid form of magic , unless they all melt down and go back to it , they can't have the same relationship.

Also we get the whole the dwarves souls are rejected from the Stone stuff , as far as I know I never heard the human souls are rejected from the fade. It's possible dwarves souls feed the stone (lyrium ) just like red lyrium eats people alive and grows.

Thank goodness for that vallaslin chart (finally). Turns out my Lavellan has the Mythal vallaslin all along. :)

EDIT: I just realized, doesn't having Mythal's vallaslin make it all the more worse that Lavellan asks Morrigan who Mythal is?

Yeah, he screams out "Ma'Vhenan!" when you fall in battle.

He does?! Aaah! I'm on PS3 and my companions NEVER say anything during or after battles, just grunts. D:

That's it, I'm saving for a PS4 and buying DA:I again...

You know, I would've tossed this in the nutbag pile not so long ago.

Now with Sera/Andruil and all this reincarnation madness?  I'll see that $5 and raise you $10.

I wonder if he's actually aged in the time he's been with Bodahn.  Assuming he was Andoral, we need a way to stretch the timeline a bit... or maybe he's just looped through a few times since then.  @w@  More likely, I suppose.
