I leave Stroud. Thank the Maker I never had to choose between Hawke and Alistair. That would have been a do-over.

I made a throw away Hawke world state where she didn't romance anybody just so that I could actually talk to Alistair...and not leave him behind...

I had to make that choice. I left Hawke; if she can't manage to tear through the veil, Fenris is bound to show up and give her a hand....I that's how it plays out in my head. =P

Mine is just dead as a doornail  :( She was already on the fast track to Villain Protagonist, so it was actually really sweet to give her some redemption via self-sacrifice, even if I had to stop playing the game and make myself some tea because I was so teary.

Maybe he did give Cory the orb himself, and later he shaved a thousand years worth of beard so he wouldn't recognze him, and so the Egg was born.

Yup, He definitely goofed with Lavellan

Yep, he definitely goofed by leaving her. I was talking to a friend the other day about how Solas seems to make such terrible life choices. At some point, you think he'd decide maybe he wasn't the best person to be making world altering choices.

There's also Flemeth's line about 'When your time comes, do not hesitate to leap," and her talk of standing before the Abyss.

You know.

Here Lies the Abyss.

Though the sheer glory that is Loghain staying behind in the Fade to fight the Nightmare of the Blights in order to redeem the Orlesian Wardens is hard to deny...

The worst part is that I think Solas is aware of that to some degree.  He mentions it in the bad Redcliffe future, and his conversations with Cole about himself when he was young point toward a lot of mistakes.  He's well aware of how much he's f***ed up, I think he just feels compelled to try.  He has a darker, more twisted version of Harry Potter's hero complex; he seems to think that because he's the one who got the world into such a state, he has to be the one to fix it and damn the consequences.

Sometimes I just want to shake Solas until the teeth rattle in his stupid egg head  <_<

So Patrick Weekes had said in the NA interview in regards to the break up scene "...the part where he steps back and his face changes because he knows he has to break it off right there or he is going to..he is going to have betrayed himself...". I find his use of tense very interesting, as apposed to "will betray himself". I think the reason that Solas thinks that, is that he chickened out in telling you who he is and as someone who is such a staunch advocate of free thought, he felt like he couldn't stay with Inky without her knowing the whole truth about him.  I think he is mostly concerned about her knowing that he gave Coryphish the orb and in essence caused all this and what the consequences of that knowledge would be. That is the part that we do know for a fact about Solas and that would not be a good thing for anyone in the Inquisition to know. Solas would be risking execution or imprisonment at the hands of the others. I think he is less concerned about what he will have to do (what that is, we still don't know) in the future. I think he wasn't really thinking about what he had done a couple thousand years ago when he dumped Lavellan. My evidence for all this is mostly me wanting it to be true which clearly means that it is totally plausible. :P

I sincerely hope that is the reason and not that he will have to die in order to release the Elvehn gods.

Sad thing is, I was never a big fan of Hawke, so I made my "canon worldstate Hawke" a default throwaway character who romanced no one specifically so I wouldn't feel bad if something happened to him/her. Then, at the last possible second, on a whim I decided to have "her" romance Merrill and fired up my current game. Then I had to choose between Alistair or Hawke in the Fade. I the player said, "SAVE ALISTAIR! NO CONTEST!" , but my Inquisitor knew it would break both Varric and Merrill (my two favorite DA2 characters). When Varric broke down and said softly that he would have to inform Merrill, even I felt guilty.

In the words of Varric, "Well, sh*t."

I think he wants her to come to terms with his nature on her own, without him there to influence her decision. Solas joined to help fix his mistake, and Lavellan stayed because she was basically roped into it all and stuck (even if she decided later on to embrace it) due to that mistake; he feels incredibly guilty over it. And with the Anchor, he does not want her to think he is with her for that alone when the truth comes to light.

He also doesn't want to tie her to his fate - what Solas is doing is terribly dangerous, and the possibility of her dying for his mistake, yet again, would kill him. He thinks he must walk the path alone, he wants to walk the path alone to protect Lavellan and perhaps even the others he adopted into his little pack.

Mythal grant me strength, I hope we can convince him to let us join him.

I honestly thought the world state I had uploaded for my Cullen playthrough was one with Loghain, but it wound up being Stroud. By the time I realized it was the wrong world state, I didn't want to start over, so I'll get to Loghain eventually.

He definitely seems to have the "I messed it up, so only I can fix it" mindset. And, yeah, he knows that he has made mistakes and seems to feel terrible about it. It's like he can't really see beyond righting his past wrongs, though...potentially leading to more mistakes.
