I had an ok time siding with the templars, since you can still save Irving. But I could never bring myself to wipe out the Dalish or side with Branka. I saved those decisions for random Keep worldstates, and even then, I can never pick the Keep tiles like returning Fenris to Danarius, or giving Izzy to the Arishok. Just seeing the tiles makes me feel slightly ill.
I could NEVER side with Branka. After that whole Hespith thing. She was well and truly a monster.
****. Random thought, though probably insane.
Mythal acted as Falon'Din's "probation officer", so to speak, after his restoration to the Pantheon.
If the above is true, it's not impossible that she carried the keys to his metaphorical handcuffs, and that the transfer of power in the final scene was -at least in part- that restoration. Whether that take on events implies that his power was artificially sustaining her mortal existence, I'm still not sure. I don't think I'm quite on board with Mythal's OGS literally hanging out in Solas yet. Something just doesn't sit right.
Other random thought: Mythal's retention of her "self" after her murder (unlike Andruil and June) suddenly makes much more sense considering Solas- Falon'Din- would have had a hand in guarding and guiding her soul back from the fade. It's not an explanation by any stretch, but it fits more nicely.
I could NEVER side with Branka. After that whole Hespith thing. She was well and truly a monster.
I did it with Dwarf Nobles, mostly. My rationale being that, of all the Origins, the Noble is the one who knows how hopeless the battle in the Deep Roads is. What happened with the golems was horrible. What Branka did to Hespith and her kin was even worse. But there was only one smith willing and able to forge golems to become the salvation of Orzammar. To paraphrase a certain alien who would have made a truly legendary dwarf of Orzammar, "Stand in the ashes of a billion ghosts and ask them if honor matters. Their silence is your answer."
The fact that my Dwarf Nobles tend to be pricks is beside the point.
And lately I've been siding with Branka, only to convince her that she crossed the line. She kills herself after forging the crown.
Frankly, it always seemed bizarre that the entire Assembly seemed to buy that a thousand year old Paragon forged you a crown and you didn't just nick it from a handy thaig. So, on the practical side, you get the crown from the latest Paragon, the one you were sent after. And on the emotional side, Oghren gets some (brutal) closure on his wife, and gets to see her make a shot at redemption for betraying him and herself.
On an entirely off-topic and self-serving note, I have finally gotten my s*** together enough to write DA:I stuff that is NOT smut
I could use some critical feedback on this one. Writing Solas's POV is so much harder than I thought it would be.
This was really great! You definitely captured the character's voices very well. I would love to read more.

It is late and I've had a lot of cake and beer and can't really formulate constructive criticism. So can I get away with just saying that I like this? A lot? I'm super picky about fanfics because it really throws me when the characters' voices seem off, but you write Solas and Cassandra and Varric so naturally. I totally believe it's them. ![]()
More pls.
I think the friendship with a non-romanced Inquisitor changes him as well. For reasons kind of the same. Of course not nearly as deeply as the romance changes him.
If you take the option in one conversation he does say that he has no friends other than spirits. I don't think Solas ever expected any acceptance from anyone. Yet another reason why I don't think I'll ever be able to do an Assquisitor play through.
I can't do one right now, certainly. Maybe much further down the road...it took me a good few years before I could roll an Aggressive Hawke...even then there are things I still couldn't do, like have Zevran betray me, give Fenris to Danarius or let Varric keep the idol (even though in DAI nothing happens to him). I think being outright cruel to Solas will be a part of that list.

I don't have that much trouble with bad things happening in my playthroughs, but I usually make nice choices because a lot of evil/renegade/aggressive/whatever choices just involve being a jerk for no reason.
One exception is SWTOR's Empire class stories, where a lot of dark side options are pretty well thought out. You can be a jerk to people for money, power, or even the lulz, and have those choices recognized in the game. I played a cartoon-villain Sith Lord and it was pretty hilarious.

Cake and beer are always a very excellent life choice ![]()

I actually loved playing a light-side Sith Lord just for people's "Wait, WHAT?!" reactions. My Sith Inquisitor (it's so weird saying Inquisitor and NOT meaning DA:I) got such a kick out of trolling people just by being decent to them. It made their heads spin.

Heh, I went the other way with my Sith Inquisitor. A lot of the dark side choices make you sound slightly unhinged, it's pretty funny.
My Sith Warrior was total light side though. So many exchanges with NPCs that went "did you just do something... nice?" "SHUT UP HOW DARE YOU QUESTION A SITH I CAN BE NICE IF I WANT OKAY"
I can't help but return to Solas' banter with Cassandra where she tells him that following the Maker might give him hope and he responds in kind that he has People. People responsible for the greatest and most terrible moments in history. Not all-powerful deities.
Again, I think it's a fascinating theory and well researched, my interpretation of the lore just happens to point in a separate direction! Regardless, let's keep sailing the lore-seas and finding possibilities! Speculation for all!
I think the "multiple gods" thing is tripping people up a bit. It doesn't mean anything in terms of who he is or his essential 'human' scope as a character.
Quick repost:

Oh.. now I get it.. I was always thinking that Inquisitor sounds familiar but I didn't remember where I heard it before.. ofc.. SWTOR.. hhahah yes I played that. Stopped though for a good reason which I rather not talk about.. some personal matters hehe.

I'm definitely not demi- or asexual myself, but I really like that Bioware has been moving away from having a sex scene in every romance. It's just more interesting and varied when different characters have different approaches to sex, y'know? I think most fans enjoy these games because Bioware weaves really compelling stories into them, and having some kind of fanservice quota is totally unnecessary. I just want a good story.
Indeed, I think that's very well-said. ![]()
THIS. Imagine the **** storm if they had shown that scene and people got to the end credits. They would've felt violated and that Solas had lied in his genuine interest in the relationship. By maintaining Solas' interest in Lavellan BECAUSE she's Lavellan - her personality, her spirit, her actions, her curiousity and wisdom - we have no choice but to accept that the interest was genuine. Did he find her beautiful? Did he enjoy the grace with which she moved? Yes. But those were merely enjoyable side benefits to the part he loved most: her. Just as she was.
*wipes tear from eye*
Beautifully said. =')
(And I'm not being sarcastic, I think this was very well-said.)

I love how the Light-Sided Sith choices were actually pragmatic half the time, but because you're, y'know, a Sith Lord, you troll everyone when you do it.
The scientist in the Inquisitor's Balmorran quest's befuddlement at being allowed to live.

I am honestly wondering how the heck did Cullen thread get so many pages.. I mean.. He is pretty simple character. He does not have any mysteries unsolved like Solas and that is the reason why I can understand all of us Solas fans being excited and so on about stuff and discussing plus having multiple theories about it. I don't know.. I mean I like him as a character but to me he was pretty boring to romance with.. might be because he reminded me too much of Alistair and since I romanced Alistair in the first one (because Zevran was just for me pretty awful character.. I don't know I am not trying to be offensive so if you like him don't get mad) XD I just didn't really like him and because of that I picked Alistair. He was cute yes but just not interesting enough. I have a feeling that most of the ppl pick Cullen only because of his looks ( I mean for the first time when they do not know his character yet unless they spoiled themselves ) well I picked Iron Bull. I just didn't like Iron Bull so much only because he was too sure about himself to be my taste. I do not really like that kind of men who sort of.. think a little highly of themselves? XD I know he was also joking many times but that is a picture I got while romancing him. Second time I took Cullen. ( I had spoiled myself and I saw that Solas would leave you so I didn't want to romance him at first because I did not know the reason so I just thought it was another thing that didn't make any sense ). I got really bored having Cullen.. it was like.. having Alistair thingie all over again and there was nothing special in it. I mean a feeling.. no special feeling FOR ME there haha. After I got to know who Solas actually is I wanted to try it out because after it all started to make sense and the story turned out to be the best one there. I just don't know how can they discuss so much about Cullen when there is not really a lot to discuss about him lol..
Solas X Lavellan - Almost Lover
Hope you like the video! More coming up later!
Your fingertips across my skin
The palm trees swaying in the wind, images
You sang me Spanish lullabies
The sweetest sadness in your eyes, clever trick
Well, I'd never want to see you unhappy
I thought you'd want the same for me
Goodbye, my almost lover
Goodbye, my hopeless dream
I'm trying not to think about you
Can't you just let me be?
So long, my luckless romance
My back is turned on you
Should've known you'd bring me heartache
Almost lovers always do
We walked along a crowded street
You took my hand and danced with me images
And when you left you kissed my lips
You told me you would never ever forget these images, no
Well, I'd never want to see you unhappy
I thought you'd want the same for me
Goodbye, my almost lover
Goodbye, my hopeless dream
I'm trying not to think about you
Can't you just let me be?
So long, my luckless romance
My back is turned on you
Should've known you'd bring me heartache
Almost lovers always do
I cannot go to the ocean
I cannot drive the streets at night
I cannot wake up in the morning
Without you on my mind
So now you're gone and I'm haunted
And I bet you are just fine
Did I make it that easy to walk
Right in and out of my life?
Goodbye, my almost lover
Goodbye, my hopeless dream
I'm trying not to think about you
Why can't you just let me be?
So long, my luckless romance
My back is turned on you
Should've known you'd bring me heartache
Almost lovers always do

He's been in three games, so he's had since 2009 to rack up the fans. Considering Solas is a new character and this thread is almost half the size of the Cullen one, I think we're doing really well ![]()

Hahah yes I know he has been in those games since I played them all XD but I just... well we gotta catch up fast!

I don't think it's quite fair to dismiss Cullen's fans as shallow.
The morality of Templars versus mages is complex, and Cullen has gone on a long journey over three games. From nervous and naive recruit, to traumatized reactionary, to a Knight-Captain who struggles to remain just after he's been burned, to the man who finally stood up to Meredith and said no, to the General of the Inquisition who devotes his whole being to a righteous cause, all while battling lyrium addiction.
I was merely okay with Cullen for most of DA. It only took a few scenes in Inquisition for me to see what his fan club had been talking about all these years.

Why? Is there a competition going on?

Agreed. I never really disliked Cullen in the old games, he was more of a 'meh' for me, but I really ended up liking him in this game. I did somehow end up liking the Solas romance equally if not more however.

Different people like different things. And none of the characters in Inquisition are "simple". Cullen has a lot of depth to him, but he also isn't as conflicted as Solas. And that's okay! He's very supportive and reliable. His just isn't a particularly dramatic love story, aside from the addiction thing. A lot of people have really been wanting a romance with...a normal guy. Which is basically what Cullen is. And it's good that they have that option in Inquisition.
I know you might not have meant it, but cutting down anybody else's choice of romance option leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
