You know, it just occurred to me. Solas wasn't exactly a popular character before the game came out, or at least wasn't popular among the people I spoke with on the forums and in real life.

But after the game came out, he's one of the most popular characters in the game.

Perks of having an awesome voice actor, a lot of mysteries, the big reveal of being the dread wolf and just being plain cool.

Totally get your point of view and I see what you're saying, I just don't think it's the case. There's simply too much evidence to the contrary for me throw my money down. Falon'din and Dirthamen clearly existed simultaneously and had a very close, quintessentially elven relationship that extended beyond friendship. I can't read that and not see them as separate people. I do love the way your mind works, regardless of whether or not we agree! <3

Same here!  Didn't mean to push the idea too hard- sorry about that.  I just wanted to be sure the distinction was clear, since you're certainly not alone in feeling like it makes Solas a bit Too Important.

Though, as one last nudge (I promise!) as an example of what I believe the pre-veil Elvish race was in its wholeness, I'm not sure I can concieve of a relationship more "quintessentially elvish" than that between Dirthamen and Falon'Din.   owo   ....I'll stop now.  Really.

Solas thread theorizes about elven gods, Cullen thread theorizes about where Cullen got his nickname. Cuz his head hair sure isn't curly ;)

I'd say that warrants a few thousand pages

Is that really what cullen thread talking about? I thought he was curly, it wasn't up for debate. What other things does the cullen thread talk about? any crazy theories?

I don't think it's quite fair to dismiss Cullen's fans as shallow.

The morality of Templars versus mages is complex, and Cullen has gone on a long journey over three games. From nervous and naive recruit, to traumatized reactionary, to a Knight-Captain who struggles to remain just after he's been burned, to the man who finally stood up to Meredith and said no, to the General of the Inquisition who devotes his whole being to a righteous cause, all while battling lyrium addiction.

I was merely okay with Cullen for most of DA. It only took a few scenes in Inquisition for me to see what his fan club had been talking about all these years.

Am I the only one who feels proud of how far Cullen has come over the course of 3 games? I'm not, right? xD In a way I feel like a proud mother seeing him as a Commander/General now in DA:I.  :P

Seeing that DA4 might take us away from Southern Thedas, it makes me wonder if we'll even get to see Cullen in DA4. I'm actually gonna miss that guy. :(

Since I was playing Saint's Row III the other day, I did contemplate the image of the Boss, Cullen, and Jolee Bindo meeting up for curling.

I think that depends on how big of an influence the inquisition by the time of the next protagonist.

I am honestly wondering how the heck did Cullen thread get so many pages.. I mean.. He is pretty simple character. He does not have any mysteries unsolved like Solas and that is the reason why I can understand all of us Solas fans being excited and so on about stuff and discussing plus having multiple theories about it. I don't know.. I mean I like him as a character but to me he was pretty boring to romance with.. might be because he reminded me too much of Alistair and since I romanced Alistair in the first one (because Zevran was just for me pretty awful character.. I don't know I am not trying to be offensive so if you like him don't get mad) XD I just didn't really like him and because of that I picked Alistair. He was cute yes but just not interesting enough. I have a feeling that most of the ppl pick Cullen only because of his looks ( I mean for the first time when they do not know his character yet unless they spoiled themselves ) well I picked Iron Bull. I just didn't like Iron Bull so much only because he was too sure about himself to be my taste. I do not really like that kind of men who sort of.. think a little highly of themselves? XD I know he was also joking many times but that is a picture I got while romancing him. Second time I took Cullen. ( I had spoiled myself and I saw that Solas would leave you so I didn't want to romance him at first because I did not know the reason so I just thought it was another thing that didn't make any sense ). I got really bored having Cullen.. it was like.. having Alistair thingie all over again and there was nothing special in it. I mean a feeling.. no special feeling FOR ME there haha. After I got to know who Solas actually is I wanted to try it out because after it all started to make sense and the story turned out to be the best one there. I just don't know how can they discuss so much about Cullen when there is not really a lot to discuss about him lol..

While I don't frequent the thread as often and I am wrapped up in Solas forever right now most likely forever, I am still a Cullenite.

His story and character development is fantastic, one we have followed through three games. He goes from a nervous recruit, to an angry captain, to a resolved commander. Sure he's good-looking, but his story is what interested me. It was built up very well, regarding everything he went through and the writers followed through with Cullen overcoming his own shortcomings.

And, he's a huge dork with a big heart. <3 If I want fluffies I go to Cullen because he doesn't leave me for my own good. 8[

(Also, since there was so little screen time for Cullen in the previous games, we mainly talked over the same theories and went off topic often. ;) Plus the trolls helped fill the pages a bit, too. XD)

There's nothing wrong with being into a character because they have a nice demeanor, and nothing hidden about them.  If we didn't have the Solas reveal we wouldn't be having crazy theories about him either.  Let's not mock the Cullen fans.  Cuz they're just as awesome and kind as the Solas fans.  And I may spend most of my time here, that doesn't mean I'm not a Cullen fan.  Let's not be like that.

I love the romances, and the drama. I think BioWare is incredible with it's writing.

I'm just not a big fan of how Gaider presents himself online...

Definitely not trying to attack you here, but this makes me a bit confused. I'd be interested in a bit more elaboration on what you mean by this, if you'd be willing. He can be a bit snarky, sure, but I've never seen him snark in a disrespectful manner (also, I personally think that snark is awesome). In fact, to me he comes across as incredibly willing to understand new viewpoints, and he immediately apologises whenever people coherently explain why something he's said might be interpreted as offensive. The fact that he doesn't apologise for everything (some people seem to want him to apologise for even existing) does not make him seem abrasive to me; it makes him seem honest. He frequently elaborates both eloquently and respectfully on a variety of topics in order to help fans understand his view on things, and that makes me practically adore his online presence. I'm a devoted SJW myself (how that is even considered an insult is beyond me), and I don't even think I've ever found any of his opinions objectionable, though I've certainly not read everything he's ever written. I get that many people will be triggered and angered by things that may seem benign to me (because of things they have experienced in their lives), but the fact that they react to things that he says does not necessarily mean that he is wrong (though I'm not suggesting that he's always right). All that any human can do is to try and understand and explain when misunderstandings or mistakes happen, and I think that David Gaider does that very gracefully whenever the situation calls for it.

Bioware (and specifically the Dragon Age franchise) is a safe haven for many groups that are otherwise largely ignored by the gaming industry. They are given representation and shown respect, and I think that's why the games and writers are held to such a high standard and questioned to such an incredibly high degree. The games aren't perfect, and neither are the people that make them, but I think that its important to appreciate that they are at least trying. Questioning things that show up in the games or things that the developers say is great; it's a fantastic way of helping the industry develop as a whole. However, demanding that the games should be perfect (an incredibly subjective and unattainable idea), or berating the developers for being human beings that make mistakes does nothing beyond getting in the way of civil conversation that might otherwise have helped the games move in a more positive direction.

I really love his character growth. I was not a fan of his back in DA:O.  He creeped me right the f*** out during my mage Warden playthrough, but I slowly warmed to him in DA2 since he was one of the few people in Kirkwall who hadn't taken leave of his senses.

I was going to make a quizzy for him, but I'm so stuck on Lavellan and Solas that I don't think it's ever gonna happen.  Sorry, Curly.  You'll just have to be content with all your other myriad hot Inquisitors

I was merely okay with Cullen for most of DA. It only took a few scenes in Inquisition for me to see what his fan club had been talking about all these years.

I started out as a faithful Cullenite.  I had every intention of making him my first play-through romance.  Per the plan, I began flirting with him at every opportunity, fawning over every little adorable detail, remembering the days I had my Circle Mage from Origins feebly attempt a flirt (ooh, forbidden romance, the best kind!)

Then I got   by fade-tongue, and the rest is history.

In all seriousness, the series of unfortunate events that Cullen endured, make him a very interesting character to me.  A templar, having sworn an oath to the Maker, to the people, to himself, to aid and protect his charges, never to abuse his position, and try to make the world a safer place.  His sheer will and faith have propelled him forward in a, generally, morally-sound direction.  He doesn't take himself too seriously either (regardless of what Varric says, haha!)  His nerves with women are right near the surface, which make him endearing and not unattainable.  I rather enjoy seeing a grown, mature man, one who is relatively sure of himself, sound and resolute in his convictions, with high morals and a humble spirit; become a gooey and giggly mess over the charms of a woman.  *breaths in deeply*  Ahhhh, the secret power we hold, ladies. (and dudes too, and... little puppies, and kitties, and... I'm getting off-track)

Now, if only Solas would kindly cease and desist, and become the putty in our hands we so desperately crave.

Phew!  Uh oh, I feel a bit warm after that.  I-I think I've got a fever... and the only prescription is more...(wait for it) ...fade-tongue!

Agreed.

On days when I've nearly exploded with shall we say politically fueled rage at people, I look up times when Gaider has, with class and sass in equal measure, shut them down.

When I want a laugh, I just look up Weekes.  :P

EDIT: Don't worry, don't worry. I'll find a Solas picture to mount on top of this page.

I'm not too attached to Cullen, but in the same motherly vein: I'm going to be pretty upset if we never see Sutherland again.

So derpy. So enthusiastic. So meta.  Just can't help but root for the little guy.

I certainly would never call anyone's fans "shallow". We all have our preferences. I wouldn't call Cullen shallow as well, especially DAI!Cullen. He went through a lot of character development, and I don't dislike him, per se.

I am just not interested in him as much as I'm interested in, say, Solas. He's not my cup of tea, just as Alistair was in DAO. Yes, I prefer complex, problematic characters who have more to them than it seems, because I find them interesting. Yes, I'm more likely to swoon over an Anti-Hero than a Nice Guy. But that's just me, and it doesn't mean that everyone who doesn't think like me is wrong.

Let's all live in peace  ^_^

This is the best. Oh my god, the snort thing at the end. That is adorable.

Makes me realize just how much I love making him laugh. It doesn't seem like he often gets the opportunity. It also makes me remember just how much he does laugh around a romanced Inquisitor.
