Probably because he secretly wonders to himself when the last time he'll say those words will be and if it won't be this time...

Stop me! No. No. Must. Stay. On Dreadnought Optimism!

What's this wet stuff in my eyes?! It hurts us! Make it stahp! *writhes around on the floor*

Just finished the break up scene *cries*

This is my second playthrough with this Lavellan, and I made a number of changes based on shifting my focus on actually making the decisions she would. One of the big ones was who drank from the Well of Sorrow. After watching the break-up, I found doing so fit really well with my girl's story. When Solas yells at her for drinking from the Well and asks what she plans on doing with its power, she explains that she'll try to make things better.

I find this scene fascinating in the grand scheme of things. You can see the effect Lavellan's words have on him. He's encouraged now, given a stronger resolve that he can try and make things right. Almost immediately after, he takes her to Crestwood, originally to tell her the truth. About everything. Right after she's given him the strength to stay on the path he set out on long ago.

Of course, we all know it doesn't work out. But that entire scene...gah, I need to go do something productive. Like master a dragon.

I'm sorry for bringing this up. ^^" It's probably because I have a bunch of really sad songs turned on...

I certainly would never call anyone's fans "shallow". We all have our preferences. I wouldn't call Cullen shallow as well, especially DAI!Cullen. He went through a lot of character development, and I don't dislike him, per se.

I am just not interested in him as much as I'm interested in, say, Solas. He's not my cup of tea, just as Alistair was in DAO. Yes, I prefer complex, problematic characters who have more to them than it seems, because I find them interesting. Yes, I'm more likely to swoon over an Anti-Hero than a Nice Guy. But that's just me, and it doesn't mean that everyone who doesn't think like me is wrong.

Let's all live in peace  ^_^

That's perfectly ok.  We all love what we love.  I just don't like mocking fandom for not being as deep and complex as a particular character we love more.  I just wanted to pipe up to avoid it turning into that.  I adore this thread and the people in it.  I don't want to offend anyone either.  It might not have ever gotten to that point even if I hadn't said anything.

I'm like you when it comes to the characters I am drawn to, by the way.

Anywho ((Hugs)) for all.

To be honest, I played through some of the other romances. They don't really have that much extra content. Solas mostly lacks a romance quest. Which would have been nice, but I don't feel too bothered by it.

We didn't because in the Solas DLC the romance quest will be redeeming him (everyone will get it, but we'll also live happily ever after with him :P ). Just wait!

Team optimism!

Solas X Lavellan - Almost Lover

Hope you like the video! More coming up later!

Your fingertips across my skin
The palm trees swaying in the wind, images
You sang me Spanish lullabies
The sweetest sadness in your eyes, clever trick

Well, I'd never want to see you unhappy
I thought you'd want the same for me

Goodbye, my almost lover
Goodbye, my hopeless dream
I'm trying not to think about you
Can't you just let me be?

So long, my luckless romance
My back is turned on you
Should've known you'd bring me heartache
Almost lovers always do

We walked along a crowded street
You took my hand and danced with me images
And when you left you kissed my lips
You told me you would never ever forget these images, no

Well, I'd never want to see you unhappy
I thought you'd want the same for me

Goodbye, my almost lover
Goodbye, my hopeless dream
I'm trying not to think about you
Can't you just let me be?

So long, my luckless romance
My back is turned on you
Should've known you'd bring me heartache
Almost lovers always do

I cannot go to the ocean
I cannot drive the streets at night
I cannot wake up in the morning
Without you on my mind

So now you're gone and I'm haunted
And I bet you are just fine
Did I make it that easy to walk
Right in and out of my life?

Goodbye, my almost lover
Goodbye, my hopeless dream
I'm trying not to think about you
Why can't you just let me be?

So long, my luckless romance
My back is turned on you
Should've known you'd bring me heartache
Almost lovers always do

I couldn't help but notice... when Solas greets you with "vhenan", or says "dareth shiral" at the end of the dialogue, he sounds so damn sad

I love how much meaning GDL is able to put into those lines. I can hear the tinge of sadness, yes, but his 'vhenan' and 'dareth shiral' are always just so intense. Like those words are conveying much more than simply their spoken meaning; they also convey the depth of feeling that he has for the Inquisitor. And it makes sense. He's speaking to her in elvhen, the language closest to his heart.

I also love how he says 'my heart'. It's said so sweetly and softly.

That also reminds me of his lines when he finally runs out of stories. He sounds so apologetic. Even with an unromanced Inquisitor that he's friends with, it really shows how much he enjoyed just talking to somebody. He even says as much at the end of the Fade tongue conversation. "And if you wish to discuss anything...I would enjoy talking." He isn't able to talk about himself like all of the other members of the Inquisition are (so much knowledge and so little personal history, as Vivienne says), so he thinks of stories of things in the Fade that he can share with the Inquisitor. So that they'll keep coming back to talk to him.

Oh, Solas.  :crying:

Makes sense. After so many years of loneliness, he's probably desperate for a friend, or at least someone he can talk to. *all the feels*

This is one of the reasons why I can't for the life of me be a jerk to him in any of my playthroughs. Knowing who is he and the vast amount of sorrow he has, I can't even begin to willingly add more to it. :c

While I don't frequent the thread as often and I am wrapped up in Solas forever right now most likely forever, I am still a Cullenite.

His story and character development is fantastic, one we have followed through three games. He goes from a nervous recruit, to an angry captain, to a resolved commander. Sure he's good-looking, but his story is what interested me. It was built up very well, regarding everything he went through and the writers followed through with Cullen overcoming his own shortcomings.

And, he's a huge dork with a big heart. <3 If I want fluffies I go to Cullen because he doesn't leave me for my own good. 8[

(Also, since there was so little screen time for Cullen in the previous games, we mainly talked over the same theories and went off topic often. ;) Plus the trolls helped fill the pages a bit, too. XD)

Yes!! I know! He is really funny and awkward yet cute and adorable! I love him as a character yes but I still prefer other kind of men more personally.. so if I met Cullen in real life I would not actually fall for him. I think Solas has the sparkle that I would like and I am not just talking about who he is or his past but his actual behaving. I like the way he thinks and I like that he is capable of telling his own opinion yet listen to others and maybe even changing his mind. Yet he sees beauty in very simple things. He does not have many friends but only spirits so he is different.. it makes him unique somehow. Since I am an artist I personally find attractive all the inperfections plus perfections. After studying his appearance I have found him extremely attractive looking. High cheek bones, manly chin and very attractive jaw line. His blue eyes that seem more like.. puppy eyes.. yet it depends on the facial expression he does. When he does his basic face for some he might look a little bit mean. I think he looks mysterious just serious.. as he never tells everything straight forward his face does neither. I love that he truly respects inquisitor even if the inquisitor treats him badly. He respects their decisions anyhow even if he disagrees. He takes things as a real man and will not keep crying about every single thing the way Anders did on DA2. As a lover he really wants you but he knows that all that he has done and all his goals that he has would only cause you pain would not be good for you he does not want to hurt you so he has to leave you because he only wants your best. This is how I see him. He will be willing to break his own heart just that he will not hurt you or put you in danger. He is with you till the very end just to correct the mistake he made no matter what happens.

Hah, I get what you mean. I plan on romancing Cullen at SOME point because I feel bad about that scene in the Circle of Magi at the top of the tower from the first game, my Amell walking up to him, and his mind breaking at the possibility of demons having sunk so far into his thoughts, they corrupted the image of a person he could never have, but held incredibly dear. I always want him to have a happy ending, Creators know that poor man deserves it and he's fine as hell. But is that for me? At this moment? The answer is no. The idea of dating someone out of pity of their past or their physical appearance steers me clear of the relationship for now as well.

But that likely says more about me and my interests in a partner who is mentally stimulating and as curious about the world as I am than anything about Cullen as a character. I love Solas' sense of wonder at the world, despite the thousands of years he's had for it to make him grim and fatalistic beyond repair. He still finds joy in things, surprise in others, beauty where some might look away. Likewise, I don't think he'd ever be someone who would shoot down Lavellan's personal dreams or personal growth. He's interested in the nature of people, what makes them who they are, the essence of their nature, and in developing the qualities necessary to rise to the occasion, whatever those traits might be.

That might just be because I'm an Aries and he's totally a Sagittarius and I dig that **** like no one even knows. But I honestly don't have any faith in astrology whatsoever!

I agree with you on all what you said.. :3

I don't think it's quite fair to dismiss Cullen's fans as shallow.

The morality of Templars versus mages is complex, and Cullen has gone on a long journey over three games. From nervous and naive recruit, to traumatized reactionary, to a Knight-Captain who struggles to remain just after he's been burned, to the man who finally stood up to Meredith and said no, to the General of the Inquisition who devotes his whole being to a righteous cause, all while battling lyrium addiction.

I was merely okay with Cullen for most of DA. It only took a few scenes in Inquisition for me to see what his fan club had been talking about all these years.

I think you unterstood wrong. I meant that those who do not know about him a lot yet and do not know his character and with the first gameplay throught they will pick him only because he is ''handsome'' thouch I actually personally find Solas more attractive. I am not saying it is wrong to be his fan. No way! He is amazing character but I was talking about personal preferences and about the background story behind him that actually I do not PERSONALLY find really interesting. Surely I know he is battling of lyrium addiction yes and he has grown a lot as a character (I have played origins and da2 multiple times). But as a story of his I don't see how you could keep up the conversation about him because I find him just maybe.. too simple character for my taste? If you get what I mean :D I do like him though. He is cute. But prefer Solas's sort of.. how he really wants to be with Lavellan and kiss her and is clearly so passionate with her but he knows he should not and he can't which is adorable. He is just a mystery to be solved which I find very veeery intriguing.

True. And it makes his impassioned defense of them much more understandable when you consider that they're basically his only friends (and considering how they're treated as tools by pretty much everyone on the non-Fade side of the veil). But his spirit friends only exist in the Fade, and it must be incredibly difficult to be alienated from the entire "real" world. No wonder he spends so much time dreaming.
