I am honestly wondering how the heck did Cullen thread get so many pages..

Well...Cullen fans have been waiting for that boy since he awkwardly tried to process Amell's shameless flirting. That's two games ago. As much as I adore Solas, he just got introduced recently. I mean this thread moves pretty damn fast for a recently introduced character. I think it will grow much bigger because we are definitely not done with Solas.

Yeah I better get an option to go find you, Dread Wolf.

And the sad thing about that is the longer he dreams, the more frequently he dreams, the more the world moves on without him and he becomes further removed from it and its concerns.

Exactly. It's a vicious cycle. And the more he tries to connect to others and fails, the more he puts up emotional barriers. When questioned by an Inquisitor he doesn't like, he isn't even really angry most of the time. He just sounds tired. Tired and sad and sick of fighting only to get knocked down again and again.

That's what makes his relationship with Lavellan so beautiful. She reaches out to him. She turns his attention from the Fade. She's someone that he can finally connect with, who might truly understand him. And he realizes just how lucky he is to have found this. "But losing you would..." It's precisely the thing he's wanted for so long but could never have. Is it any wonder he falls so quickly and so hard?

But he has friends. spirits.

Very true, I was going to say this myself.

However, Thedas does not have such a kind view of spirits. They're seen as dangerous and destructive, often summoned against their will or drawn through when the Veil is torn, or twisted and corrupted in response to the negative expectations or emotions of mortals they come into contact with. And considering what a destructive world Thedas is... I can only imagine how many friends he's lost to mortal ignorance or destruction over the centuries.

There's probably also a degree of separation he feels from them since he himself is not a spirit. (He even says as much to Cole at one point. "I am not a spirit, and sometimes it's hard to remember such simple truth.") He may enjoy their simple natures and virtues, but at the end of the dream he's not really one of them. He is too ponderous and complex to really be one of them.

It's also kind of implied in some party banter that he needs to keep on his best behavior and emotional state in the Fade to keep from drawing the attention of or creating demons. (Like when Bull asks him if he indulges in simple pleasures in the Fade like flying around or seducing Fade women. Solas responds that such behavior often attracts demons, and Bull bemoans that demons ruin everything.) So there's another level of personal restraint and distancing that keeps him from fully enjoying being around spirits just as there is when he's around mortals.

A hermit who lives in the woods might love nature and animals, but at the end of the day he's not really of nature or one of the animals, so (depending on who and how the hermit is) he could still feel lonely out in the wild and (on some level, however small) long for the companionship of another person even if he can't stand being around most people.

That's how I see Solas, at any rate. He has many spirit friends, and I'm sure they're all lovely and have kept him company over the years. I'm just not sure spirits alone can do it for him, which might explain why he finds a befriended or romanced Inquisitor all the more precious. =(

Before Blackwall did his Champion thing and became an immortal, whenever the crap hit the fan in my playthroughs (which 80 percent of the time involved a convergence of bears), it was always the hobo elf wizard left standing last.

The first time I wandered into the Hinterlands High Dragon territory out of morbid curiosity, everyone except Solas died in five seconds. Solas lasted two minutes. At level six. I still don't know how.

And once he got Rift Mage...:D :D :D

Just finished my first playthrough. I was a bit late to the game...thanks to lack of funds. *shakes any fist at life*. But yes OMG Solas. So many things made sense in the end with him and I can say mind is blown. I was so happy I avoided reading all the spoilers ^w^

the worst I think was when I went to storm coast and got to the beach where the giant and the dragon are fighting and the dragon took off so the giant turned his attention to me and gave me a boulder to the face and quickly killed everyone in my pt Solas included

Completely 100% agree with you. This reminds me deeply of that first banter conversation where you have a choice during the prologue - it's when you go up to that one cave past that house on fire before you head up the mountain to continue and he talks about his run-ins with the Dalish in the past and it not necessarily being a good thing. You can sort of question him there - and that's all he sounds. Tired of trying to lead them down another path they refuse to recognize or consider due to years of lost knowledge and ignorance.

That is, truly, what makes Lavellan unique if you romance him in a friendly way. She asks him questions, she wants to know more, she's willing to consider that which her people would discard out of fear or cultural bias.

That conversation.  If you pick the middle option he says something along the lines of being run off due to superstition (referring to the superstition of the dread wolf).  If only the inquisitor could've been... inquisitive... and asked "and what superstition is that?" Game over. Mystery solved. Everyone can go home. Save us a bunch of heartbreak.

LUCKY! I accidentally read two huge spoilers about him before getting to that part of the game and will always wonder how strong my emotional reaction would have been had I not seen it coming. ><

Oh well. Good on you for successfully avoiding spoilers and getting to experience the Solas content in all it's emotional glory! ^.^

This is coming from someone who adores both Solas and Cullen.

I romanced Cullen first because I had a human Inquisitor as my first playthrough. I thought Cullen was adorable and I appreciated his character development through the games. He really grabbed me in this one though. I thought in Inquisition, fans who patiently waited for him got an amazing reward after all that waiting.

Which brings me to the topic of Solas! I mean how many years did Cullenites have to wait for a satisfactory ending (heck even just the option to romance him). While it may not take this long for Solas, I just feel like there's a huge chance we'll get an equally rewarding experience with him.

Solas is such an amazing character, and I love how I don't know everything about him!

Ugh. Solas come back.

Edit:

Ahh top of the page....what to do....what to do.....HAVE A SOLAS!!!

Lol thanks. I actually played a qunari but have now started a elven female due to the ending. It should be interesting to see how all this is going to unfold being a elf and all.

I think I'm gonna cry now...  :crying: And I want to give that silly egghead Fade nerd a big hug and tell him that everything will be alright. I sure hope he knows what he's doing this time (and hopefully won't get killed in the process, dammit).

I am hopeful that, should Solas be in extreme danger, he's as cagey about protecting himself as Mythal was.

On a happier note of sunshine and unicorns, did anyone else feel like the kiss-centric romance felt oddly.. Princess Bride? There's a level of purity, reverence, and devotion to it that flat out smites me straight through the heart. Also - if they want to end whatever Solas DLC that's headed our way the way they ended the Princess Bride.. I'll take it. We know their animators can do it.

“Since the invention of the kiss, there have only been five kisses that were rated the most passionate, the most pure. This one left them all behind.”

Finally caught up, and I missed all the wonderful theories about the elven pantheon! :(  So even though it has nothing to do with the present conversation, I'm adding my own thoughts (Sorry, carry on!) In the story concerning Andruil and the Void it says:

Andruil put on armor made of the Void, and all forgot her true face. She made weapons of darkness....

So Mythal spread rumors of a monstrous creature and took the form of a great serpent, waiting for Andruil at the base of a mountain. When Andruil came, Mythal sprang on the hunter. They fought for three days and nights, Andruil slashing deep gouges in the serpent's hide.

I agree with what many have said that Andruil's armor and weapons may have been made of red lyrium and that's what caused her madness. If she wounded Mythal deeply with a weapon like that, is it possible that Mythal became poisoned and eventually died because of it? In the dark future of the Hushed Whispers quest, Solas is infected with red lyrium and it's implied he will die of it, the same as any other companion.

The Dalish got a lot wrong, but I find it really odd that there are no stories of Mythal's murder. Maybe she returned to her temple and only her close followers like Abelas knew the truth about her wounds?

I know this is idea is crazy and probably Elgar'nan just stabbed her in the back or something, but Mythal claims that whoever betrayed her also betrayed the world, correct? Pretty sure bringing red lyrium (linked to the Blight?) into Thedas counts, intentional or not.

Also, welcome Rooikat!  :)

I really like Cullen. Cullen is the man you see yourself raising a family with. It's safe (ignore the lyrium addiction), warm and respectful. It has a potential for "dwelling". The Solas romance is a two people thing, as I see it. Every time someone brings up elven babies my brain goes; NOOOOO!

It's passionate and absorbing in a way that I can't see Lavellan and Solas building a future. The would make a great team for enternity, making the world a better place, but lacks a "everyday" aspect that Cullen has. Two great romances with two really different flavors.

Solas and Lavellan - world builders, Cullen and inky - family builders. I'm weird?

Aw man! That's how you trigger it???

I got that conversation in a playthrough once (him asking if you're Dalish and mentioning he's had run-ins with "your people" in the past), but I'm used to party banter being just between companions or with auto-dialogue. I didn't notice the dialogue wheel until right before the time ran out and it was too late to respond, so Solas said words to the effect of "Prefer to remain silent, I see. Fair enough." And I'm thinking "NOOO! I had something to say! Ask again!" But no matter how many times I reloaded and walked around, I couldn't get that conversation to trigger. ='(

I'd love to hear what he had to say there, and explore Lavellan's possible responses. I imagine they'll come across as haughty and closed-minded if Lavellan speak well of the Dalish (like an early Haven conversation where you ask about his view of modern elves, and anything you say positively about them comes across as sickeningly haughty and arrogant. Thankfully the writers later let the Dalish Inquisitor be open-minded and speak well of his/her people without sounding like a jerk), but I would like to learn more about his views.
