I think it's really neat that Solas has lots of little expression changes in conversations. The animators did an excellent job of giving him the face to accentuate the words.

Oh, I miss him too. Dear, darling Zevran. My first gaming crush (apart from Virgil from DMC3). *sighs* He was the one who got me into BioWare. Thane was the one who got me onto the forums, and Solas... dear, darling, lying, heartbreaking Solas is the reason I came back after the ME3 abuse.

Ah, now I have the urge to rewatch Merlin. I have them all on DVD, but NetflixUK recently added it. All the watching, none of the moving for disc changing. Tempting.

 

I did love the first seasons of Merlin, however...

I will agree that there are plenty of ways one can connect Merlin's character to Solas.

I have watched (and rewatched, many times) all of Merlin since it started and finished airing on the BBC. But I have never gone back to that finale. Its been, what, 2 or 3 years since it ended? The wounds still cut me deep man, cut me deep. Doesn't help that I live near Arthur's alleged burial site. Just a constant reminder of THE HURT.

I wonder if the new laptop I'm saving for would play DAI... Eh. Probably not to all the HD I'd want it to. Plus I don't really need to own the game more than once...

 

 

On the subject of Cullen from a few pages back. Massive apologies over the fact that I often seem really aggressive and hateful over the guy and his romance. I don't hate him at all, I'm just bitter.

In DAO and DA2 he was just that guy with the great VA who I wasn't sure if I liked or not. Wasn't too thrilled about him being in DAI either.

But then he showed up not only looking fantastic, but being fantastic. Love the little laughs he gives every time my Inquisitor makes one of his stupid comments. He is finally a character with some personality and background. Hooray!

I was pretty thrilled about romancing that. Buuuut, I just can't go through with it. He is just too....nice. He strikes me as the kind of guy who would tell you every day that he loves you, buys you flowers, and has already planned the names of your children. OH THE HORROR. IT'S LIKE MY WORST NIGHTMARE.

 

 

My fear of someone wanting me to be their wife and baby mother is so strong I can't distance myself from it in videogame characters. Ahaha, I am so weird.

Asexual calling in to sit on my pedestal of extreme smugness as I point out how it is not horse**** that some of us are fine with just kissing.

Now, I appreciate a fine naked buttocks as much as the next person; but sex scenes really do little for me. Actually, I will never be able to put this into words that won't unintentionally sound offensive so I'm going to drop this Friends clip because it sums up best my feelings on watching sex.

For me personally, I get so much more out of beautiful friendships and epically passionate kissing scenes. Solas does the latter superbly. One of the reasons I love that he is limited to female elves, those scenes only had to be animated for one body type and so it works wonderfully (and daaaaayuuum). Tristan is always changing heights in his scenes with Dorian, and in one case Dorian was just making out with his collarbone. So shexy.

I don't walk away from the other romances feeling like the same kind of passion. I wonder if it's because of how gated that romance is. Everyone else loves the inquisitor, regardless of who that is. But Solas is pretty damn picky on what kind of quizzy he wants.

 

Well, amongst that rambling is meant to be a point. Basically, Solas romance was exciting, interesting and passionate and I do not give a toss that they didn't bump uglies on screen. 

And yes, I'll admit that the truth about his identity did pretty much hammer this romance in as one of my favourites. Come on, he's her evil god. That's so weird that it makes it perfect for my weird self.

I was talking to Sera when I last played on my human rogue. Asked about her parents..she remembers nothing except a big tree in the alienage and a locket. Then I remembered in the Dragon Age Keep there is a choice about whether you returned a certain locket to the unstable female elf in the alienage when the whole orphanage was overrun by demons in DA:O. I never understood how there were demons in the orphanage in the first place. Anyhu I dont know I feel there might be a connection?

I'm in the same boat. Blithe dismissal is one of the few things that always gets my goat no matter how old I get.

 

I'm also... less receptive to people who "Humans are sexual creatures so we need sexual content for something to be good, and anyone who says differently is lying." As a demi-sexual with asexual friends, I... am not the biggest fan of hearing people say we're damaged or lying for saying we don't want or are okay with not having gratuitous sexual content.

Reposting what I said in the "Who would you trust to be team chef?" thread, because it's fluffy and I'm rather fond of this headcanon. Spoilered because it's kinda long.

I can't see Varric being a great cook. He's a city boy. He could tell you where to get the best grub in Kirkwall, but that's as far as his culinary knowledge extends. He'd be quite open about this, too, and snark at you if you tried to make him cook. 

 

Sera's similar, but while Varric knows his limitations, Sera just goes all-out and makes these really disgusting dishes with about a billion weird ingredients. She's always really hyped to start cooking and is the type to look at a recipe, see that it calls for a dash of chili powder, and takes that to mean "dump in as much as possible". Needless to say, everyone except Sera goes hungry on the nights that she cooks.

 

Dorian probably knows a lot about food, and especially which wines to pair it with, but not so much about the actual cooking. He'd be a good menu planner, but you'd have to get someone else to actually make it for you.

 

Vivienne I can see actually being quite a competent cook. She's all about being self-sufficient, even though she prefers to not do her own dirty work. So I doubt she actually does a lot of cooking herself, but I think she'd know how to make a good meal if she had to. She'd do the camp cooking if she had to choose between that and letting Sera cook, but she dislikes stooping to such a menial task. Her solace would be ordering everyone else around as her sous-chefs. "No, darling, I said peel then slice. Do try to listen."

 

Blackwall, as others have mentioned, seems like he'd be really good at cooking game and camp food. He'd be the type to forage a bunch of stuff, throw it all into a pot, and turn it into something delicious. If you want a rabbit skinned, boned, and turned into a hearty stew, then Blackwall's your man. I can see him doing a lot of the party's cooking, both because he's good at it and because he's quite even-tempered.

 

Cole...would try very very hard. He might end up with something edible. But probably not. It might look alright, but it'd end up smelling rather disturbing.

 

Cass would also try hard, but I don't see her as a natural cook. I can also see her being frustrated at her lack of ability. She's mastered one or two dishes to her satisfaction, and makes them every time she cooks. She also gets grumpy if someone (probably Varric) points out how often she makes that same dish.

 

Iron Bull is a good cook, and is always experimenting. After all, Krem says that when they got paid in rice after one job Bull learned to make excellent rice pudding. I can see him creating a surprisingly elaborate menu for the Chargers; one of the reasons their morale is so high. I can also see him as being rather fussy while cooking, and needing to control all of the dishes he's in the process of preparing. While Bull's cooking, everyone's exiled to the table until he's done.

 

Finally, I see Solas as a good cook as well. He's probably the most versatile of the lot of them, too, knowing how to make a great number of dishes. He's had a very long time to learn, and he's been on his own so much that whenever he gets bored of what he's been eating he learns how to make something else. In his travels in the Fade he's observed food being made in all places and eras, so he has a very eclectic palate. I can see him as making something that puts everyone off initially, but as soon as they try it they realize it's delicious (so basically the opposite of Sera). I can see him, Bull, and Blackwall being the most frequent team chefs.

 

I just love the image of Solas presenting this enormous dish that looks super weird, but actually turns out to be delicious. And then after that everyone always begs him to cook. I can see him as being rather gratified by the praise, and ending up enjoying cooking for people other than himself for the first time in a very long time.

I couldn't disagree with these people any more. Other than Solas romance needing more content to feel more full. But to say Bull's is better....

It's interesting the RandomEncounterz post mentions Nora Roberts, since I read on the BW blog that both the Weekes' are big fans of hers. There's a hopeful bit for team optimism- PW likes a writer who's known for her romance novels.

 

Anyway, it's a thoughtful post so I can't dismiss it outright. I'll have to think more about why it's such a strange read, though. Iron Bull's romance arc seems like nothing to me. Very disappointing, considering I would have done Sten faster than it took him to say "I don't think this is appropriate, kadaan." Obviously there are different personalities and expectations at work here. Possibly because I'm sapiosexual, so those Fade nerdy conversations felt romantic even if they weren't. PW did say that these characters will appeal to different kinds of people, so thus far it looks to me like he succeeded pretty well, if someone else finds IB's story line that satisfying.

 

About the no sex scene, I think Bioware was being careful of people feeling manipulated and therefore squicked, as some complain about the Blackwall romance. They probably also wanted to give something to asexual players, and Josephine and Solas were that representation. Whatever. To me Solas' romance is passionate that I don't even see how you can interpret it as not being physical, but I leave people to their own headcanon.

 

As for needing to see Solas go through more progression in order for the romance to feel real- I kind of think the opposite would happen for me. The fact that he's willing to GIVE IT ALL UP, the thing that has motivated him for untold years and which changed the whole world, is already almost to the point of breaking credibility. The fact that he'll trust the Inquisitor AT ALL is so huge for this character that comparing him to the other romance arcs is misleading. The needs of characterization and his role in the story outweigh the wish for fangirl moments, and that's as it should be, in my book. Not that I wouldn't have wanted more scenes and more romance-specific dialogue, also some more acknowledgement from the other companions.
