Oh shiiiite:
Because this feels super friggin relevant I'm reposting this from a reddit thread you can find the link to here:

Sooo if it's June who escaped and June who betrayed.. perhaps it was out of a desire to return to his own people? Or something to do with Lyrium blood?

Not sold on it entirely. I'm gonna have to ruminate. And by ruminate I mean ponder and not chew cud.

Thing is, Sandal had dreams with Flemeth in them. Why would she appear in dreams of someone, who's killed her? My bet is on Ghilan'nain, nobody would suspect sweet halla deity, and then - wham - quickly, do a plot twist dance!

And I still cannot figure out where this "June is a dwarf" theory comes from. Codex anyone?

Definitely not trying to attack you here, but this makes me a bit confused. I'd be interested in a bit more elaboration on what you mean by this, if you'd be willing. He can be a bit snarky, sure, but I've never seen him snark in a disrespectful manner (also, I personally think that snark is awesome). In fact, to me he comes across as incredibly willing to understand new viewpoints, and he immediately apologises whenever people coherently explain why something he's said might be interpreted as offensive. The fact that he doesn't apologise for everything (some people seem to want him to apologise for even existing) does not make him seem abrasive to me; it makes him seem honest. He frequently elaborates both eloquently and respectfully on a variety of topics in order to help fans understand his view on things, and that makes me practically adore his online presence. I'm a devoted SJW myself (how that is even considered an insult is beyond me), and I don't even think I've ever found any of his opinions objectionable, though I've certainly not read everything he's ever written. I get that many people will be triggered and angered by things that may seem benign to me (because of things they have experienced in their lives), but the fact that they react to things that he says does not necessarily mean that he is wrong (though I'm not suggesting that he's always right). All that any human can do is to try and understand and explain when misunderstandings or mistakes happen, and I think that David Gaider does that very gracefully whenever the situation calls for it.

Bioware (and specifically the Dragon Age franchise) is a safe haven for many groups that are otherwise largely ignored by the gaming industry. They are given representation and shown respect, and I think that's why the games and writers are held to such a high standard and questioned to such an incredibly high degree. The games aren't perfect, and neither are the people that make them, but I think that its important to appreciate that they are at least trying. Questioning things that show up in the games or things that the developers say is great; it's a fantastic way of helping the industry develop as a whole. However, demanding that the games should be perfect (an incredibly subjective and unattainable idea), or berating the developers for being human beings that make mistakes does nothing beyond getting in the way of civil conversation that might otherwise have helped the games move in a more positive direction.

It's totally nothing against him, really. I highly respect all the people who work at BioWare.

I certainly haven't read everything he's written online, it's just the posts I have seen I find to be abrasive and snarky, which personally makes me cringe.

I'm sure he's lovely in person... well I hope he is at least. Some people just don't mesh, which is fine.

Sandal is rumored to be half elf, which might explain the dreams and magic affinity (and lack of beard).  Just FYI.

It's nice to read a different perspective and see how other's react to our beloved hedge mage, but I agree with you that part of the post comes off as weird. On the one hand I agree that Solas' romance lacks the same amount of content as the other romances - because it objectively does have fewer scenes, no option for intermediate physical contact, and no "fade-to-black".

I think part of the problem is that the author seems to define physical attraction by its culmination rather than by the attraction itself. If it doesn't end in sex, there was never any attraction to begin with. Which is both patently false as an idea and untrue of the Solas romance. It's also untrue that people won't be entertained if there isn't sex. For a lot of people, it's the tension they enjoy rather than the satisfaction of that tension.

Comparing Bull's ability to trust with Solas's discounts important parts of Solas's character. He struggles with trust, he's been betrayed. That he comes as close as he does to telling the truth to Lavellan is huge for him.

I wouldn't be against some of the suggestions. How cool would it have been for there to be conscious Fade exploration? I don't think the romance necessarily needed it though. Intimacy was expressed in Solas letting his guard down, in the openness of his expressions - adoration, joy, the moment we all like to joke about being able to see the very second his heart breaks. He shared in the only way he could, given who and what he is.

I wouldn't discount a lot of the friendship path stuff as being non-intimate either. He has less content but there's plenty of time spent getting to know him and what he's about. It wasn't like playing Wicked Grace, at the same time Solas shares his interest and his ideas and the things he loves with the Inquisitor. For Solas, the conversations with someone open to his ideas and willing to listen is the equivalent of Bull and killing dragons.

When did this dream happen? I have to admit I never paid Sandal much attention. I felt like he was a caricature of a person with disabilities and didn't care for that.

Could be! Or, he could also just be an ordinary dwarf, with his connection to the Fade reestablished somehow.

We learn from the game that tranquility can be reversed with the severed link is touched by a spirit. Wouldn't the same process apply to dwarves, whose connection to the Fade are severed to begin with?

Bodahn found Sandal in the Deep Roads. In the Deep Roads are darkspawn. And archdemons... Souls of the old gods.

Now I'm not saying that the old gods could be spirits of the elven gods trapped inside dragons, and that one of them could have touched Sandal's in the Deep Roads, and used him as a vessel... but it's possible.

YUP YUP.

Is it actually said anywhere that he was dreaming when he had the vision and saw the scary lady? I'm sure you're probably right about him being able to dream, but you don't need to be sleeping to have hallucinations or visions. I was just wondering if it was confirmed that he can dream or if we're making the assumption.

In Dragon Age 2.

Actually now that I watch the video again, it doesn't say that Sandal dreams, only that he saw a scary lady by his bed. Still, it's possible that he was dreaming and Bodahn never thought it to be possible and dismissed it as Sandal just seeing things?

Sorry about that.  :P

I wasn't being rude, btw, I just think I missed the first part about Titans so I'm confused on the theory and just want it simplified for me. I hear titans and I think Percy Jackson. I don't play dwarves so I thought maybe I had missed some key lore.

On the topic of Sandal:

  • Sandal: One day the magic will come back. All of it. Everyone will be just like they were. The shadows will part, and the skies will open wide.
  • Bodahn: Huh. What's this?
  • Sandal: When he rises, everyone will see.
  • Bodahn: By the ancestors, what's gotten into you, my boy?
  • Sandal: Enchantment?
  • Bodahn: Hmph. That's more like it.

If we're thinking of the same thing, it's one of the conversations you can have with Bodahn and Sandal during the game.  I don't recall if it's a proper conversation or if it's one of the banters that comes up when you click Sandal.  (He had some easter eggs, like the prophecy which has a rare chance of being spoken when you click him.)  Sandal says there's a scary lady in his room who watches him, and it's commonly believed to be Flemeth.  I don't remember it being said that it was a dream exactly, but who knows with Sandal.

Could be! Or, he could also just be an ordinary dwarf, with his connection to the Fade reestablished somehow.

The Carta dwarves in Legacy seem to think Sandal is a lost halfbreed bastard of King Endrin who was abandoned in the Deep Roads as a child.  They're undecided if he's half human or half elf, but a half human dwarf would be taller, rather than shorter.  Who knows.  There's many possibilities.  But I'm still of the opinion that the Old Gods are still stuck in dragon form, and that they're the Forgotten Ones.

I must say that I love all the fanfics about alternative universes/go back in time/Lavellan was a reincarnation. The idea is that she had a past with Solas when he was Fen'Harel and influenced his rebellion and development. I've felt that Solas loved Lavellan in the game, but had a lot of trouble grasping at why. Yeah, I know he loves her personality and spirit, but there must have been other cool women throughout the ages. Why Lavellan? These fanfics give a lot more depth to their relationship makes their relationship more meaningful.

I am primarily a lurker, but I want to share my solavellan song/head cannon.  It is a very folksy tune from the nineties, but the lyrics are near perfect to me.

I see this song (minus the anachronistic car reference) as something a Lavellan that has come to terms with the relationship ending yet wanting Solas to know that she is there for him.  I particularly like the lyrics that say, "If you ever need to feel a hand take up your own when you least expect but want it more than you've ever known, baby, here's that hand..."  It reminds me of the scene where he grabs her hand to seal the first rift.  I also like the line that says,  "If you ever wish for things that were only in the past, just remember the wrong things aren't supposed to last."  If my Lavellan could tell Solas one thing that would be it - to accept what happened and move forward in THIS world.  Finally, the line in the song that says that "...a love that smashed us both to bits.  I thought this is the kind of pain from which we don't recover... But I'm standing here now with my heart held out to you.  You'd have thought a miracle was all that got us through.  Baby, all I know is I'm still standing"  sums up how Lavellan feels at the end of the game looking out from her balcony - hopeful and stronger.  Hope you enjoy -- back to the shadows for me.

I feel like Gaider has a very... strong online persona. I know a lot of the time I cringe when I see he's written a post, and I think he just doesn't understand how he comes across to a lot of people.

He puts up with soooooooo much crap. And no matter what he says or doesn't say, people take it the wrong way, and his words knock around the echo chambers of the internet forever and ever. This is I'm sure why some developers like Bethesda have virtually no social media presence at all.

I like Gaider, and I've even sparred with him in the forums on certain topics, but he strikes me as a down to earth person with good story instincts and a willingness to self-deprecate when it's called for. The fact that he's willing to give us insights into the characters, lore and the story process is golden to me. A bit of snark, considering the metric crapton of backlash he gets for everything, is not too high a price to pay IMO.

On topic Solas: I was thinking how much I love his little "oh ****" expression when Lavellan says "sweet talker." Up to that point he can still make out as if the whole conversation is about Fade nerdy stuff and there's nothing else going on. I'm sure his mind is reaching for the next bit of smooth bullshit he can try out and Lavellan just cuts through that crap straight to the money. Lovely.

Just finished Cole's quest, made him more spirit-y. Asked him about the Fade afterwards, he said that "it is here, but held" (talking about the Veil, likely?). And then he says something like "Without you, there is nothing, not even us". Maybe I'm becoming paranoid about things ppl say in this game, but this sounded... weird

Crazy theory time-- I've been wondering why Solas is so against the Grey Wardens plans to hunt down the remaining old gods.  He never really explains his reasoning, though he hints at it in a banter with Blackwall: https://www.youtube....h?v=SQLMLOE6_ms (The one where Solas "hopes they are correct" about killing all the archdemons stopping the Blights.)

So why WOULDN'T killing all the archdemons stop the Blights?  Well, maybe there's something worse down there below even the Old Gods, something that if corrupted or released would be far worse than any one Blight?  Like, I dunno, a massive ancient elven city trapped at the center of the world for thousands of years?

(Of course, he could also be pissed about the idea of hunting down Gods and killing them before they get corrupted, for fairly obvious reasons... but I really like the "Arlathan is at the center of the world/is the Golden City" theory.  Even if geologically it's pretty nonsensical... but hey, fantasy! Hell, maybe the Old Gods were trapped down there in the first place to defend against anyone getting down there and finding Arlathan at all.)

Oh, and as far as recommending songs, I think Sarah McLachlan's "Do What You Have To Do" would be an amazing one to use and very lyrically appropriate.
