And I wanted to punch Cassandra right in her blathering mouf when she started going off about heathens at the temple. Gee, Cass, I helped you with your goddamn Seeker quest and have been your friend and polite about this Maker-Andraste-Holy crap, and this is what you do? What, you scared or something? My gods were clearly real in some capacity and yours is just on faith so you have to dis me and mine? Pfft.

We're still friends. She just got the stink-eye for awhile.

Yep. I love Cass, but I'm 99% certain that she's dismissive because suddenly the elven gods look a lot more present than the Maker ever did. Normally she's pretty open-minded.

You use that picture all the time, and I'm just thinking... isn't the tent overcrowded?

Idk, I am of the opinion the person we got to know in game is who he is no matter which name he goes by. It's one reason why I don't think he would ever be a full on villain like some people seem to think.

Compared to a mage playthrough, archery will seem very weak in comparison. At first. While you start with fire and lightning as a mage, you'll have to wait a few levels before acquiring any active archery talents. The backflip multiburst is a lot of fun, especially with the knockdown upgrade. The passive one before that increases damage with elevation is not to be scoffed at either. Even just being on a crate or a little hill can trigger it.

The archer's lance that makes it go through multiple enemies will be your friend. It'll be fun one-shotting wraiths at Rifts if you can fire when they're lined up.

Basically: just give it some time. You start out kind of piddly, but get much more awesome a little later.

I got that passive skill, and I've noticed that unknowingly I'm acting so much like a Legolas/Dalish hunter - seeking elevation, keeping a watchful gaze in battlefield, etc. It does help a lot that the elves have a lithe body.

Though, I really hope Evade was not restricted to the ability bar and could be linked to something other than the number keys. Even Octodad cannot keep a hand on WASD, another on the mouse, and somehow manage to hit a number key and directional one at the same time. Bioware, really?

Now back on topic: Solas.

I was all a bit smitten about Solas prior to the game release so I guess I was all about dat egg before I knew the truth. But I won't deny that the truth makes him even more appealing to me. I'm a sucker for these things.

I'm guessing this thread will hit 2000 posts while I'm asleep. Bah. But my likes will be back then so bring all the Solas :) I went OTT recording all of Arbor Wilds/ToM so I will probably bring my goods from there when I'm back.
In the meantime, here is my mismatched Inquisition

They look like such an unprofessional bunch to be leading an army anywhere.

Mind you, I feel they go totally outdone by Celene. Seriously, Celene? That's what you are wearing to a forest? During battle

Okay, it's not that he's Fen'Harel, it's that because he is who he is...we're all effing sad. There, I think that's what I mean...

Edit: And yes, I remember how we were, when he was just Solas. And I'm glad that he is who he is, really no problem there for me...and oh creators I've spent so long just standing in front of chests in EDL reloading and I think I've broken myself *sobs*

I think of Solas and Fen'Harel as different names for the same guy, so it doesn't bother me.  And that guy is complicated, always has been.

Then you look at Flemythal and it seems pretty clear: she is much more "divine". She seems to know what is going on with an almost prophetic clarity. She has powers far beyond almost anyone else in the game. She helps the hero but only to serve her own interests. She's mysterious and amoral. But she comes from the exact same pantheon as Fen'Harel, so it makes me wonder how he could be so normal while she is so clearly supernatural. Then I wonder how much of her godhood is derived from something inherent in her being and how much comes from the perception of the People.

Well, to be fair, when we first meet Flemeth, she's also a hobo apostate of an old lady living in the wilderness, not unlike what Solas passes himself as.  Flemeth and Solas both show up conveniently for their own purposes, and for a greater agenda as well.  I don't think they're that different, we just got to know Solas on a much more personal level.

Definitely Elgar'nan. What other being would slaughter four people for Zevran sticking his hand in a tree stump?

That's a bit odd this is at the beginning before you get to the Temple of Mythal right? Cause if it is I never saw Celene there before I left the camp.

Haha. All the elven gods made a bet to see who could stand living as a hobo the longest. Solas plays the game to win.

May I ask what your guys reason was to play as an elf?

Most people seem to like human PCs better, so what made you roll a Lavellan?

My Warden was a City elf because I found their situation in the world interesting and the origin was good (Shianni & Soris <3).

During the game itself, the race kinda grew on me, because of the lore, the dalish legends and the fact that they were just so much more interesting than the usual ("boring") humans. Missed the option in DAII even more than I thought I would, and therefore rolled a Lavellan in Inquisition.

I don't know why darwes don't appeal to me, and I have a qunari PT on stand by, because I do my second Lavellan right now  :P

Edit: Hope that all makes sense. It's pretty late here!

A juicy question, indeed.

On my part it's two-fold: first, I had my heart set on Solas since the start and as soon as I learned he would be a LI option, I was sure; yet, that by itself is not answer enough, since I would have gone with Lavellan for a first playthrough no matter what. (And after having finished the game, I'm thoroughly convinced it was the best decision ever, there's just so very much in DAI that makes playing an elf a totally deep experience, and that does include the Solas romance.)

I agree with the sentiment that the Dalish grew on me, it became kind of personal after lots of DA playthroughs, even when I wasn't playing an elf. I developed a thing for elves. My canon became a female Cousland for DA:O, but elves have been my canon race since forever before that even so. The why of it goes beyond the DA franchise in general - I simply identify with the Elven archetype.

Plus I'm madly obsessed with concepts of things and civilizations lost, the tragedy of a people or an age, the magic that slumbers deep in the modern world. Ancient ruins, places of exquisite beauty and immortality that have been squandered, crushed and destroyed? Ooh. Ooooh.

I like dwarves, too, their loss and history draw me, too, yet if I had to choose between the beauty of a divine forest and the heart of a mountain, well, I'd lean towards the forest. Aesthetics is a thing for me, and dwarves I find too... boxish. Though fascinating.

On an even vainer note: the ears. I really like the ears.

I've liked elves in different mediums, from the dark elves of Record of Lodoss War to the Dunmer of the Elder Scrolls, but I came to really like the elves in Dragon Age. I ended up trying out playing as an elven mage as my first run in Origins, and I really enjoyed it, because I could see the world through the eyes of an elf and a mage. A young man who grew up in the Denerim Alienage, who was raised by a mother who once served as a Night Elf against the Orlesian occupation, and who was stolen away by the Chantry controlled Circle to become an atheist who shared the Libertarian perspective that mages deserved their freedom.

My interest in the Dalish didn't really come into play until I read Addai's "The Wolf at the Edge of Camp", and I became keen on the idea of playing as a Dalish mage. Merrill also played a significant role in my interest with the People as my favorite character in Dragon Age II, and I found her story arc much more interesting to me than Hawke's. Frankly, I gravitated more to the premise of a Dalish elf trying to help the People with revolutionary technology over a human noble, and I'm not interested in the Andrastian faith or Andrastian culture that much. The Dalish respect magic and mages, they won't surrender their religious beliefs or their cultural values (despite the Chantry outlawing their religion), and they are resilient despite the trials and tribulations they have faced over the centuries. I find them to be a very interesting group of people.

While there have been some misses in Inquisition (the lack of pro-Dalish characters among the companions and advisers, the lack of an elven love interest for male Lavellan, the use of Andrastian terminology over elvish terms by Inquisitor Lavellan, the lack of elven content in the Dales) I was happy to play as a Dalish mage after all this time. Having room to decide elements of my character's backstory, having options to shape how my character felt about Clan Lavellan, being able to refute faith in the shemlen god and express that he followed his own gods, being able to wear elven robes (the High Keeper robes are my favorite, with ancient elven robes being a close second), having the option to tell Solas that the Dalish are his people, and having the opportunity to help Briala and the elves of Orlais (and referring to them as 'our people' in dialogue with Solas).

I imagine he was the one who marked himself down as a manservant. Solas has been to court before. He's had his day to be introduced as someone of power. Now he's more interested in observing, and being a manservant is the best way to get people to leave you alone while you people watch.

Edit: [Considering what Sera names herself, I would say they definitely had control over what they were introduced as.]

I laughed pretty hard at that. Whatever man, I figure he can handle a little dig at his dignity now and then, for what he'll eventually do to Lavellan.  "Now manservant, fetch me my wine. Make haste foolish one in the silly hat! And then shower me with kisses until I lose my mind."  I'M NOT BITTER, I SWEAR.

And much like Thane and I believe Solas note, and the Red Jennies prove, servants pass under nobles' paranoia-radar. So it's not just that he's there to observe all the funny hi-jinks, it's that he's putting himself in the best position to help the Inquisition. And he probably finds the idea of the Dread Wolf just being a manservant in a goofy hat hilarious.

I'm extremely interested in the mechanics of the empire of Elvenhan and how the gods interacted with it. Solas definitely seems to have spent his time in the nitty-gritty side of politics.
