I heard mention yesterday that someone had a giant Thedas map - would they mind sending me a link of it? I'm trying to sort out if the Qunari and Humans came from the same direction. It appears so, but the Kossith (early Qunari ancestors) had a settlement in the southern Korcari Wilds at the time of the First Blight, which seems strange as it's one of the southern most places on Thedas maps available to us at this time. They could have still come from the North like they later did, but I wonder why they chose to settle so far south?

I HAVE THE MAPS I HAVE THE MAPS!!!

 I've been waiting years to shout that.

I have it in MS Paint. I don't know how to link it or anything. In a second, I'll edit it the baseline map I used.

Don't worry Lizasaurus. As always the DA Wiki's got this. Them and their supremely hi-res Thedas map.

My rogue Lavellan also played the Game like a pro, which is kind of hilarious since she's such a gentle-hearted person and rarely lies if she can help it.  But the ingenue card was her weapon.  "Oh, look at the pretty little Dalish girl!  Isn't she precious?"  She took the way the Orlesians look down on and fetishize her people, got them to underestimate her, and turned it against them effortlessly.

I think she quickly comes to really enjoy the Game; it's a chance to flex her mental muscles, and she honestly doesn't mind messing up the lives of a few nobles if it's going to improve the lot of many more people and strengthen the Inquisition.  It also teaches her poise and mental control under enormous pressure, something that she desperately needs after losing Solas hard on the heels of the breakup.

I couldn't agree more. I thought she would see advantage in this immediately and she would have no qualms with doing what must be done here. And I agree about the last, after that breakup I could literally see the "mask of being collected" while inside she was confused and distraught.

This theory about the humans could have been elves....well it is possible that could have happened. That theory immediately  made me think of The Tower of Babel where GOD separated the people by language and scattered us all over the world.

4 And they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top is in the heavens; let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.”

5 But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men had built.

6 And the Lord said, “Indeed the people are one and they all have one language, and this is what they begin to do; now nothing that they propose to do will be withheld from them.

7 Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.”

8 So the Lord scattered them abroad from there over the face of all the earth, and they ceased building the city.

9 Therefore its name is called Babel, because there the Lord confused the language of all the earth; and from there the Lord scattered them abroad over the face of all the earth.

—Genesis 11:4–9

But who knows Humans probably came from a different side of the DA World. I'm not saying I completely agree with this theory but it could have happened and it could end up true in the DA world.

I WOULD LOVE A COPY OF YOUR MAPS. <3

EDIT: Curse you like quota! THANK YOU for posting your map! I shall see if I can chart where people came from.

:D It didn't take long to create an Imgr account.

They're obnoxiously basic looking because the high-res map Blackout and I shared from the wiki is too gorgeous for me to concentrate.   Which I'm sure is a problem for all of you guys too.

First one is my best guess at the modern-day borders.

Second is Tevinter at its height. I was generous in the south of Emerius department. Let's call that 'So long as the Archon is asking, we've nailed that territory down'.

So i don't normally do crazy theories but i've been thinking:

if your assumption is correct and everyone used to be elves, what if the other races are more like a genetic mutation? like for example: if an elf and any other race procreate, the resulting offspring has the same phenotype as the non-elven race.  this works like dominant and recessive genes in genetics. what if the elven gene is recessive, so whenever they mate with another species/race/whatever the dominant gene will completely "take over" the phenotype- which is why only two elves can have an elven baby.  so this brings me to my next thing: the terror demon says the qunari race is a mistake.  like a genetic experiment gone wrong? i mean, ghilan'nain already has a somewhat mad-scientist reputation for experimenting and creating creatures, what if the qunari were the result of genetic experimentation?

...annddd now i feel like i'm in school.. next thing you know i'll start using proper grammar and capitalizing my sentences. maker forbid.

This is great. Ghilan'nain = Niirti (Stargate SG1)

You are a woman after my own heart. <3

I'm a man who gave his fiance hand-drawn maps for her birthday.

Fair enough to mistake me for a woman. Enough people I've met in real life have been flummoxed when the bearded man starts getting giddy over coats.  ^_^

What's interesting to me is that the farther the human tribes went from the North, the more 'barbaric' they became. The Alammari settled down in the modern Bannorn. But those who remained close to the heart of elven civilization became advanced themselves. I get the feeling that, at the time they claimed they conquered Arlathan, they probably controlled the modern heartland: Minrathous, Asariel, Val Dorma, Marnas Pell, Vyrantium, Neromenian, Carastes, and Qarinus. Slowly conquering their way up to the next step up on the chain of power.

YES. Ok so maybe not a random mutation in elven genomic DNA, but that means my retrovirus theory could work! What if the quickening worked like a retrovirus and caused the host to transcribe / insert the foreign DNA into the germ line thus creating human babies! I know the humans arrived in Thedas via par vollen from a separate area, but what if this is how they initially originated (from wherever they hail from)

I really hope nobody on here knows me....

EDIT: my typo's and my sentences that were worded like a 5 year old constructed them

EDIT: Wait... is there a town called Solas on that Tevinter map? When is this map exactly? Where did Leliana say that her agents found the village Solas claimed to be from? How old was it?

There is. From the sounds of it, it's a fairly normal Tevinter city. I think it's just a city named after the elvish for 'Pride'. Probably built over the site of an elven settlement, as a smarmy 'FU' from the ascending Vints. Solas specifically says it was a tiny, tiny village you can't find on a map. :)

Wait a second.

Mythal came out of the ocean. Which means she could have just came ashore from crossing the ocean.

She has rounded ears in her well when she jumped out.

Mythal was a human all along...

One thing I've considered is whether humans used to be elves - in fact, whether everyone used to be elves. Because of that weird thing where a half-elven, half-human child just comes out human. What if the "quickening" involved people splitting into different races somehow?

Okay, it doesn't sound that likely. But still. Fun to think about. :D

AUGH, these two things drive me INSANE.   I can think up a weakly plausible theory for just about all the other crazy big questions in Thedas, but seriously... why is it that can you only get an elf if two elves do the glory-bump?   And what the hell, humans?  Why do you exist?

I'll try to post my full Theory of Thedas dump when I've worked out this "old veil" thing, but if the overall theory holds, Mythal isn't the Mother of elvenkind in anything but the vaguest metaphorical sense, which leaves open the possibility that she might instead be the mother of humanity.  (Not as insane as it first seems, honest.  Take a close look at the "children" in her mosaic - maybe the artist couldn't be bothered with teeny-tiny pieces for the pointy ears, or maybe there's something there.)   But even if you throw sanity to the wind and assume Mythal did make humans, why would she?  What possible purpose do they serve?

The only thing I can come up with that tries to hit both problems is complete madness, like full elfy-ness requires the contribution and merger of both halves of their original "whole" being, so the elf contribution in a non-elf-elf pairing just isn't enough to... elfify the offspring.  And if that's true, then maybe Mythal had a vested interest in creating proto humans as reality-side-only test vessels for elven souls, perhaps knowing she might need one to be shuttled back into when the civil war hit the fan.  But that's all kinds of problematic in terms of the timeline, given that that her ToM mosaic establishes her as the Mother at least concurrent to (and assumedly before) the fall of Arlathan.  And even if you're willing to go that far (which is right over the edge and into the abyss of madness)... why mess with the ears?

GAAAAH.  Humans.

Maybe it's just a representation of a young Flemeth as the last person to drink from the Well?

Because the humans are said to have come in thousands of years after Arlathan was established. I got the feeling that the pantheon was active for most of that.

Still.

The ocean origin feels very important.

Mythal, Andraste, and Flemeth have those horned helmet things. Dragons have horns. Par Vollen has those ancient pyramids devoted to horned, divine beings.

:o :o :o

EDIT: Anyone else notice that Flemeth mostly seems to intervene in the affairs of humans? That Mythal sought out a human witch, and not an elf in an alienage going through a 'classy Vaughan style wedding'?

Whoa

> Once upon a time there was a land of elves, ruled by Elgar'nan

> Mythal, queen of the humans, arrives onto this land's shores, forever becoming associated with the sea she crossed to get there

> Elgar'nan and Mythal marry, uniting the two peoples

> The secrets of magic are shared among kings and queens, including immortality - which involves transferring a soul to a new body

> Ghilan'nain in particular becomes obsessed with trying to perfect the ideal host

> Somewhere down the line, one of Ghilan'nain's experiments either go terribly wrong... or she intentionally unleashes it upon the rest of the world.

> Cue years of civil war

So, I posted this like 30 pages back (aka yesterday lol) and I was wondering if anybody had given it any thought:

So I saw an interesting codex in the Emerald Graves that I can't seem to find online (I'm playing on PS3, so no screenies). It's about how Keeper Gisharel of clan Ralaferin seems to be the definitive source of dalish "lore". I know from multiplayer that Gisharel is famous for disclosing dalish lore to outsiders, but did Gisharel write the book (so to speak) for other dalish as well? I'm also interested in WHEN the information was given, since it seems there was a break in dalish knowledge that occured in the towers age. If somebody could dig this codex up, I would really appreciate it.

*tapdances out*
