Well said!
My Lavellan removed them because she felt that to brand themselves with their own shackles, long before they ever were slaves to the Shemlen, was anathema to their identity of how they like to think of themselves as the last "free" elves.
I think AWR's delivery of that line "My people vowed never again to submit" was perfectly delivered (and I'm curious to see Sumalee's take on it) in capturing that this was a rejection of that part of their history, not a rejection their identity as a proud member of the Dalish.
Well, that was my take on that line, anyway?
I can identify with that. I would add though, another part of my decision to go through with the removal (though I rejected it at the first round before the final decision) was simply bitterness. Really, how many times can your entire belief system be kicked till you are just utterly crushed? This little precious gem you've managed to preserve of your people, your connection to your loved ones at home in the clan, it seems like such a noble pursuit to nourish what once was, and all of that was stripped away step by step almost from the very beginning of DAI. By the end it's just... I felt like my Lavellan would feel like something had been ruthlessly squished in her regarding her heritage. Add the heartbreak to that and I'm surprised she's still standing and breathing.
I like that line. All of this part was so excellently crafted to be honest, I'm really admiring every bit of it (even after feeling cored like an apple from it).

Since my story is being checked by my beta, it is not ready for this celebration...BUT it will be up sometime soon so I hope the wait won't be too long.
So while I cannot offer my story as contribution...I offer Varielle Lavellan as consolation, lol! He is going to give Solas some sass, chasing Cass, and going after Dorian's... ![]()

I feel your pain. Now if I can come up with a good excuse to say to everyone around me why I look like misery walking.......... it's great to spend (*ahem* 90% of my work hours *ahem*) here talking about it all, though, it really helps.

Precisely, there's a so much Kick The Dog Dalish moments in this game, it's actually kinda sad to think about.
Your Gods aren't really Gods at all (from what you can tell), Mythal has spent the last few thousand years possessing Shemlen women, actual Ancient Elves completely reject you as children playing dress up in the woods, Sera constantly mocks you and your beliefs (and after the vallaslin scene, I really wanted to punch her for being so insensitive about it), Solas reveals that you've been walking around wearing slave markings this entire time and you find out that it was the Elves own fault for starting the entire clusterfrack that was the Exalted Marches...
Then you have all this stuff about Corypheus and basically giving you the nagging fear that the human's religion seems to be shaping up to be far more on the ball and closer to the truth than your own...

Perfectly summarized. I've been trying to grasp at explanations to say that there was at least a little truth to all that the Dalish believe in and stand for, but DAI makes it soooooo hard. The ONLY way that any of this would become even remotely bearable is if at least Solas sticks with Lavellan and together with her creates something entirely new out of the elves....
...but we know how that ends. *dies* Now if we don't get a DLC to patch us up I'm not sure I'll ever recover. It's a perfect tragedy - it's absolutely perfect - but it's going to take therapy (or a great, great deal of sad poetry) to come out of it. At least that's my reaction to all of this at this point.

YAY! We're past two thousand!
(<-- this is a party hat now.)
Kani had the vallaslin removed. It was a very hard decision for her. She does believe in the fact that they are now part of what makes her Dalish. They are as much a part of her culture as their aravels and the halla.
BUT she is the first. It is her duty to learn as much as she can, to reclaim as much of their history as they can. She also has to embody it. Her experiences at the Temple of Mythal and her interactions with Abelas proved that she - and thus the Dalish - know nothing. By this point she is seriously hurt that they got the vallaslin wrong, but she really isn't surprised.
She also trusts Solas implicitly. She does not believe that he would deceive her, so she lets him take them. It's a mark of trust, but it is also a mark of her knowledge and her bond and duty to her people. She has learnt of their history, and as the First she is now the embodiment of that new knowledge.
Though, I doubt the other Dalish would see it that way.
Actually, I'm going to go off on a tangent here: Why is it that every time a fanfic that has a barefaced Lavellan meeting with a Dalish clan she explains the removal of her vallaslin by using Solas? She could easily use the Temple of Mythal and her interactions with Abelas and the Sentinels as an explanation. That would be much more believable to other Dalish than a "flat-ear" apostate hermit. Or better yet, use the voices from The Well if she drank.
Honestly that just does not make much sense to me. But maybe I'm thinking about it too much.
It seems I can't think of anything but Solas these days.
Really.
Help!

This is so accurate!Although to be perfectly honest it made the Dalish much more interesting to me and the elves generally...Kinda wished we could play a DA game/expansion/whatever that took place in Arlathan.I want to learn ALL the secrets!

Listened to this in the car on the way home and got ALL FIRED UP, I imagine my Lavellan would like to listen to this as she plans her quest to find Solas.
