I had the ultimate of cringes. I don't know what I was expecting him to be announced as, but I just felt super bad FOR Solas. Maybe arcane adviser would have been better. That being said, it's a totally acceptable title to be a manservant for elves. I felt both guilty and horrible for having him announced as "just" my banging-the-dread-wolf Lavellan's servant.
But! That allowed him to disappear in the back ground. The servants seemed to like him. It never played out that way, but he could have gotten a lot of information being a lowly servant elf. That's how I think of it, in order to not be so bothered by it. Solas seemed not bothered by it, and was having a good time despite it. Well the servants were refilling his glass too.
I'm curious, what do you guys think would have been a better way to announce him?
That's plausible, yes. Also it's possible that the voices whisper something to him. Right after that exchange, Abelas starts to sneer then he turns to look down in the well. Afterwards he starts saying "you have shown respect to Mythal, there is a righteousness in you I can't deny..." etc.I'm super late to this theory party, but I wanted to add a comment about the Solas/Abelas interaction.
Solas is most likely the only unmarked elf in the party. Since he has no Vallaslin, Abelas probably already considered him to be the "leader" of the party even though he was hanging in the back. The Inquisitor might have been asking questions, but she is clearly a shemlen slave and Solas the noble in service to whichever god's Vallaslin she has.
When Solas says "Elvhen like me" Abelas gets his hint that Solas is not just some elf noble. My take on Vallaslin is that it's both identifier, and ye olde elf blood magic glyphs that allow the noble/patron god who owns the slave to manipulate the body directly (or cause pain). I imagine that there was some subtle magic play poking at Abelas' Vallaslin. If Vallaslin used to work like that, then Abelas doesn't just use his magic spider sense to come to the conclusion that Solas is more than an elf mage.
Friggin' Leliana! Worst. Spy master. Evar!!It's actually possible to find several codex entries on Rainer lying around before you have Blackwall's personal quest. There's also a very big clue about his lies when you get to Skyhold - Blackwall mentions how he spent the Blight in Ferelden (which caught my attention as DAO players know only 3 Wardens were in the country at that point) and in upper floors of the library (near Leliana's birds) you can find Blackwall's speech he made during the Blight which confirms he was never in Ferelden.

I agree. I think he actually may have wanted to be presented that way or if he didn't, he wasn't bothered. He's not easily riled up and though arrogant, he's not so arrogant that he'd get mad over something like that, especially if it's useful. Sera chose her own too, if I remember correctly.

Yeah Sera chose her own. Hahahaha oh that was glorious.
His conversations and quests are 'godly' bugged. It wouldn't surprise me if the game fails to trigger the actual dialogue in this instance as well.
If it becomes revealed that the Inquisitor becomes a slave to Fen'Harel, I might actually try a playthrough in which she drinks from the Well... On the condition that he doesn't mind-stop me from stopping him from doing something stupid he'll later regret. Like sacrificing himself for the other gods.
Let. them. roooot. *insert sad puppy Lavellan face*
Wouldn't that be a delicious twist? Of course, as you say, as long as it doesn't result in him sacrificing himself or some such. He does have a penchant for free will and things of that nature. But they just have to put something like this alternative in, being a slave to his will, I mean it would be a totally non-conformist ending!
i don't have the link, but Patrick Weekes has said that it's not a bug. He goofed and forgot to write the dialogue completely. So unfortunately there is no dialogue to trigger.
(You're talking about when Solas says he begged in regards to the Well, right? Thread moves fast, so I apologize if that's not the dialogue you're talking about)
And here I was looking forward to the anguished pleading in his voice. *sniff*
It's so ironic too because I spent the past year or so living in a friend's novel(s), discussing the symbolism extensively for pages upon pages. I would write down all my interpretations, character analysis, possible twists and implications. Sometimes my chapter feedback was longer than the chapter itself. I LOVED it to death. I got so obsessed with his fantasy world, I couldn't sleep sometimes. He'd drop hints all the time and it drove me almost insane *g* He kept telling me that nobody ever understood his novels the way I do. Our minds work much the same way, so I just get his message, I'm just a lot dumber than him, so I have to concentrate REAL hard *g*
That same friend is playing Mass effect (became his favorite game of all time instantly) now (a gift from me) and he's finding stuff I never noticed before. And I thought I was a HUGE fan. But he's got analytical skills and a memory for details like nobody else I know. I am almost shocked how much stuff is in Mass Effect, how much more symbolism and mystery. And in such a seemingly simple game. To be fair, he's been playing nonstop for over two months now. I haven't played the games in almost 3 years. I forget very easily too. I have no memory for details which is why I need to write down stuff immediately if I want to figure something out. Dragon Age makes my head spin. I was so overwhelmed when I played DAO that I ignored the codex completely and focused on the social stuff and the companions which was easy to understand...
I haven't played DAO and DA2 since release. I'll need to replay. But I have so little time after work. So I might just keep reading all those wonderful fan theories.
I wish I had beta readers like you. I have enthusiastic readers, just not ones that have the time and energy to give me a whole lot of detailed feedback. I have one such, but that's not nearly enough for a clear perspective; everyone has their own, unique take, different things grab them, different things matter to them. The more such feedback you have, the better you can get a clear picture of where you're at and what needs work.
I'm a huge ME fan just as I am a huge DA fan, and I can relate to that feeling; I was pouring over theories and connecting all sorts of dots in ME, too. I'm easily obsessed. Of course, none of this is conducive to the part of my career that doesn't involve mad fantasy plotting and building bridges between fantasy realities and this reality.
Yep, I get up to strange things in my free time, I know. But one day... ONE DAY... I will make it and have enough leeway in my time to spend most of my hours on this stuff, MWAHAHAHA!

I know. It's really not a weird or outlandish way for him to be considered the just the servant. It's more like...we get used to the idea that he's this figure who is a lot like a teacher/scholar. He's a bit set apart from everyone else, but holds himself humbly and is compassionate to the less fortunate. Wisdom and pride and the image we see of Solas is far removed from "lowly" servant that it's a bit of a shock (probably both toward the player and Inquisitors) that to everyone else he's "just" another elf tagging along and nothing special.
Being addressed as the servant is the best place for him to be (even if it doesn't let him blend completely) and no other title would give him as much freedom or space while at the ball. Solas certainly doesn't care. I think he rather enjoyed getting to observe, rather than be observed in the courtly intrigue. So, I totally agree. I just feel bad as a modern player. Meta knowledge and modern servitide/slavery principles and stuff.
Friggin' Leliana! Worst. Spy master. Evar!!
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it implied Leliana knew and didn't say anything? I seem to remember the inquisitor quipping that Leliana had an entire report on Thom Rainier already written and isn't that mightily convenient?
I think it could be part of his motivation. Even if you're playing an Inquisitor whom Solas hates, he never approves of you drinking from the Well. It must be so much worse for him if it happens to someone he respects or loves.
I didn't. I'll probably have one world state that has my Inky drink from the well but for my OTP, she doesn't. I took Cole with me originally and he convinced me it was a bad idea(don't understand why he "greatly disapproves" if you let morrigan drink it though). It'll be interesting to see how that comes into play. I'm wondering if it'll be anything like Deus Ex:HR - where if you decide to get your implant "upgraded" and you can be manipulated on a boss fight.
Friggin' Leliana! Worst. Spy master. Evar!!
This is the woman who let Solas into the Inquisition and didn't think to check up on the backstory he gave her...
I love Leliana but she had some really dumb moments in this game.
Unrelated. Browsing through my music list and found this song.
It's rather sweet and something that I believe a Lavellan would think about Solas. I love Celtic Woman and we need more pretty/cute songs. ![]()
Did anyone else cringe when Solas was introduced at the Winter Palace as our elven servant? I mean it would be okay with another race as Inquisitor but with Lavellan it seemed all wrong. Couldn't they have altered it to "companion" and let the nobles read into that what they wished - since at least with a female Lavellan it was probably true. I was also rather disappointed the dance sequence was so short; I'd love it to have shown us on the actual dance floor, scandalising the nobility (since we no longer had to worry about getting thrown out) and indulging in something a bit risqué, like an Argentine Tango, since that would be so different from what they normally do. Still I have a good imagination!
I was like "OH HELL NO ORLAIS BURNS."
But then I figured Solas may have suggested it himself. When you ask to dance the first time, he says he enjoys dancing but to dance with her now would cost her approval with the court. He does say that posturing is necessary from the very beginning.
Oh you are correct. She had a soft spot for the Wardens.Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it implied Leliana knew and didn't say anything? I seem to remember the inquisitor quipping that Leliana had an entire report on Thom Rainier already written and isn't that mightily convenient?

I don't know if I believe she was being inept. I know she romanticizes the Wardens, but I think she was fully aware of his identity, eventually, and giving him a second chance because despite the truth of him he was someone the Inquisition needed. Especially since he had those Warden treaties. The Inquisition could not take advantage of those treaties if Blackwall was exposed. She's a cunning lady.
edit: Top of the page, have some Abelas and Solas:

Apparently, Solas has another companion quest that doesn't trigger. At least, I haven't managed to get it thus far.
Has DLC magically happened yet?
I miss my boys already ![]()

I took some action shots of my beloved trio while they were taking down the last of the High dragons and messed around with them for a bit. It distracts from my game ending sadness. Woooeee. Want more.
I really need to go play the other games I have now. I'm starting to get a backlog. I never get a backlog.
Totally rolling my 'perfect' run female Lavellan when my birthday rolls round later this month though. My treat to myself. Solas kissing ![]()

I suppose. It fits with what she says when you find Jowan in Redcliffe 'everyone deserves a second chance.'
It doesn't explain her inability to check up on Solas.

I noticed that when Flemeth activated the geas on my Lavellan that it put glowy rune marks on her face, and I wondered if that had some connection to what the vallaslin used to actually be. I don't think Morrigan's face glows when Flemeth activates the gaes on her, though. Just an observation.

I have a feeling this quest might have been cut. I have the Prima guide and I've noticed a few things in there are slightly different than in game. For example Briala looks different in the pictures in the guide. I am guessing the guide was finalized for printing, and then that's when the quest might have been cut. I am assuming of course. i haven't seen a response anywhere on the status of this quest, even on Answers HQ.

I will give you that one. I can't come up with a plausible reason for that.
I'm so confused. I click on him after they kissed on the balcony and he still calls her "Lethallan" and "My friend"... what just happened? o.o
This bug I encountered requires some headcanoning now (because no way am I going back a save after hours of playing). They agreed to be friends after the first kiss, and my game bugged out and he still wanted to kiss her on the balcony (and me, being weak, couldn't say no). I guess they're just really close friends who care about each other, but also know that a relationship is a bad idea? I don't know.

Pretty sure the marking things glow on Human!Inquisitions/and the rest of the races though.
Leliana certainly romanticizes the Wardens and it's awesome and all that she believes in second chances but it wasn't her choice. She would let an Inquisitor get into a relationship with Blackwall and never share her information. She and Blackwall were both working for you-- and you had every right to know!I don't know if I believe she was being inept. That whole well thing has me puzzled. If Corypheus had drunk from the well, would he have been under the control of Mythal? If he had, could she have stopped him from using the orb again?
