Ooooh, herp. I just figured it was night time in a totally non-symbolic, super the literal way. I did see him as glowing in the way that catholic icons do halos to denote sainthood/ holiness/ deity.

If we follow my theory about the orbs representing Sun, Land, Moon and Sea, they could be a hint at his connection to elven mythology, and thus elven pantheon. If it's really the moon behind him, it could hint at his connection to Mythal.

I think he secretly supporting Fen'Harel while being bound to the service of another god (he has vallaslin, which implies he wasn't working for Solas plus there's Solas' lack of interest in Briala's network).  Which is good news (sort of.  You're still bound to Mythal's will, after all) for anyone who drank from the Well.  It seems it is possible to work against the god you're bound to!

(I don't support the 'Solas killed Felassan' theory at all)

Oh I'm totally going with this now. This also ties in with the theory that Fen'Harel rebelled to free the slaves. If that's the case, then of course a slave who wants to be freed will keep on referring to Fen'Harel even if he isn't working with Solas, maybe in supplication, maybe simply as a reminder that slaves have been freed before and can be again.

Well let's throw some stuff out.

He's got a halo that usually denotes holiness in iconography.

However, the hand positions in icons are often significant. Solas has one hand pointed upward holding magic and one is pointed down and crooked, almost broken looking. That could symbolize his dual nature as protector/deceiver.

He stands in the middle between worlds and gods- that's pretty clear.

What are the jagged things to either side of him?? To me they look like mountains. Does that denote the Veil? Maybe he anchors the Veil somehow?

It could be total coincidence, but the end of his staff looks like a halla head.

I don't like to make this comparison, but the Orthodox icons that this tarot reminds me of are those that depict the apocalypse. Mainly in the composition. Example here and here.

Those jagged things look like mountains to me, with trees at the bottom, the staff is definitely a halla head @_@

I just noticed the halla head is sitting exactly bellow one star of the stars around Solas, so Ghilan'nain?

I don't think he's glowing; I think it's the moon behind him.

Even if the moon is directly behind him, it still may mean something.

Probably overanalysing it :D

I'm actually getting reminded of Diana Wynne Jones' Fire and Hemlock:

Spoiler

Felassan gives Briala the information she needs in a way that doesn't make it look like he's giving her the information at all.

It's just an aura. They have it all the time in religious arts. It's aura emanating from the person such as spiritual energy or a state of mind. Eventually sometime down history, people with auras are replaced with halos as a sign of divine significance.

So it's basically just an indication of Solas's divinity.

That works.

True. If we didn't know he was a god, or a supernatural being and just relied on the tarot card being hermit, the aura could just mean he was an enlightened person.

The Dread part's most likely a mistranslation of Fen'Harel though, which probably meant Rebel Wolf during Arlathan days, going by this. Even if Mythal calls him Dread Wolf, that's probably just them acknowledging how different the present's become from the past.

Edit: ToP Solas (my first ToP ever, whoohoo!)

I think there's something to be said that although Solas loses his nerve to tell you the truth about himself, he tells you about the Vallaslin, a symbol of slavery. His wanting to remove those shackles (if you will), is him being true to his nature.

He leaves because staying, or putting aside what he had promised to do long ago, would be a betrayal of himself.

I find it interesting that no matter what choice your Inquisitor makes, he still decides to leave. On the one hand, the Inquisitor, and thereby the People, while held back with ignorance and twisted cultural practice, are perfect as they are. They deserve better than the situation they're currently in. On the other, Solas tells the Inquisitor how beautiful she is, and so would the People be if they could cast off the chains that hold them back.

TL;DR: SLAVERY. Solas is out to break it in both practice and culture.

Psh, what Solas needs to reduce slavery is an industrial revolution. Stop moaning Solas, go hang out with the Smith castes to replace mortal errors and manual labor requirements.

This appeared under Temple of Mythal concept art section..

Were there broken statues of Mythal & Fen'Harel in the temple? I'm so searching for these when I get to the temple.

Also, an entire page with statue designs... Ahem

Can we just talk about the surgeon in Skyhold for a moment? The first time I met her, she was all "Magic is antiquated, the future of Thedas is to be found in Science"

And I was like, YES SCIENCE

And then she started talking about leeches and bleeding and I was like, ermm, ok, I'll take my elfroot, thanks

...I really should pay more attention to the statues and murals, and not just the random cheese I find lying about.

YES! I was so excited about where that was going and then ... leeches. Maybe she's secretly a blood mage and leeches are her sneaky-sneak way to get it in Skyhold without anyone noticing. Super sneaky blood mage style. Unlike... Jowan. Least sneaky blood mage.

Joking aside, I would likewise be interested in more people in Thedas heading down the mind of science!

Just goes to show you what technological period Thedas resides in. I, for one, will feel excitement for when the cotton gin is invented.

By the way the print on Solas' orb?

"Its reflective surface is marked with an organic fingerprint pattern"

Huh, fingerprint...
