OK guys , I have to go on abit of a rant here, forgive me , but I have to let it out.
What's up with Lavellan understanding elvhen language and being completely oblivious about it at the same time. It's so inconsistent and frustrating. It's ridiculous and mind boggling. I know that from gameplay perspective this happens so the player doesn't get spoiled, but what is the explanation from Lavellan's perspective? She/he got smacked over the head with the Stupid stick?
I know how understanding foreign languages work, English is not my native tongue. Even if you don't know the meaning of a certain word you can still place it within the context of the sentance. But oh noooo, Lavellan ignores the whole conversation the Fear demon and Solas had like they were casually chatting about sipping afternoon tea. If she/he can understand perfectly the conversation between Solas and the spirit of Wisdom ( along with perfect punctuation, I might add), there is no reason she couldn't atleast have clue on what they were talking about. Because , God forbid, we might actually confront Solas about him omiting information or straight up lying through his teeth. Same diference , if you ask me.
End of rant.
I'll just stop thinking about it and the problem will go away....like every problem with this game. *sigh*
There's a lot of variance about how much the Dalish actually understand of the Old Tongue.
However, with a few thousand years between Arlathan's Fall and the Fall of the Dales, there was bound to be a lot of loss, and what they have left is distorted.
Maybe there hasn't been that much language variance.
But the scene where Solas's Wisdom spirit dies has lines like what you'd associate with Falon'din and burial rites. Religious stuff that has a much higher chance of being remembered.
It's sort of like a Catholic that can recognize bits and pieces of Latin used and changed for church, but when her old-school boyfriend busts out full Classical Latin in a sass-battle with an ancient demonic monstrosity, she doesn't really understand more than the most basic grammar.
A lot of the other inconsistencies were things getting left out, like her not recognizing Mythal.
EDIT:
Capricorn, it's a GIF of the scene from the Prologue where the party climbs the mountain to make their way to the Breach.
