That is a good point! Unless he was not being entirely honest, I'm not sure how the timing works out then.
It seems like he was shocked to find out how far the elvhen had fallen, like it was knowledge he had gained fairly recently rather than possibly having centuries to mull over. But that could be just a misread on my part.
Honestly, I have some trouble processing this whole "In order to find interesting places, one must be interesting" statement. We know that the Fade is shaped by the spirits/demons living there. "Normal" mages can visit, but they cannot affect it in the way the spirits do - they walk through the world created by another; so, it doesn't matter if they are well-read/have travelled a lot or not - they'll still only see whatever the spirits have created. Now, Dreamers - and by extension Solas - are able to re-shape the Fade at will. Maybe what he meant was that if he didn't travel, he'd quickly run out of ideas for various places to create for himself in the Fade; if he didn't know a lot about history, he wouldn't know which memories to look for, and so on.
Edit: also, to me, it looks like whatever knowledge of modern Thedas he has, he got it fairly recently. Could be mistaken, ofc.
