I think that what she meant, perhaps, was that Solas seems to prefer just "vhenan" rather than "ma vhenan". So if one intends to imitate the way that Solas speaks when writing a fic, one should use "ma vhenan" rather sparingly (and preferably not at all). Just writing "vhenan" is more "Solas", and would therefore be a better imitation of his voice.

 

Edit: I type slowly. You already had an answer, apparently.

I actually cut a lot of the endearments out in my fanfic...I realized I was emphasizing them because of what I wanted for my character, not because they would be used in anything other than the most intimate emotional moments.

On the true love topic, I don't quite get the reactions some fans have had to the idea of Solas having had a lover in the past. Specifically, the reference to 'sloppy seconds'.   (And him and Mythal/Andruil being involved, which I think has the possibility of being hilarious and/or traumatizing)  A lot of relationships are based off real connections, real love. A lot of relationships fail despite that. Thane adored his first wife, but obviously loves Shepard too.

(Mind, I do understand the complaints about Bioware love interests having dead wives and bringing them up a lot.)

Probably my instinctual dislike of 'one true love' stems from how I, um, see it differently.

So let's say everyone has one true love.

The one person perfect for them.

Now, Timmy dies in a car crash at seven. Does that mean Samantha is doomed to have to settle for a runner-up the rest of her life, or does it mean that Timmy was destined to die, so he was never assigned a true love?

I just find that a horrifyingly bleak thought, as opposed to the rather optimistic view that there are multiple different people one person can fall in love with over the course of a lifetime. There are some really cool people out there. If, say, Solas loved an ex-slave and was inspired to take new steps in his rebellion against the pantheon by her, does anyone think that would diminish his love of Lavellan?

Since I can't seem to stop referencing Crystal White or Terry Pratchett in any of my interactions today,  I'll reference the joke Pratchett had about the two star-crossed lovers, whose forbidden love would have been the talk of bards for centuries if not the unfortunate coincidence that they were born in separate continents, six centuries apart.

Am I ranting? I feel like I'm ranting. 

Rant along! That is delightful. :-)
However, I think many people just do not think about it as realistically/rationally as you do. (Please forgive peaks of sarcasm in what comes next.)

There is real life and there is fantasy and the game is fantasy, which can (and, hence, should) be "perfect". Walt-Disney-perfect! And that means three things:
1) No beloved dies. That's why people complained about Shepard dying, even though that actually was very decent story writing. (But **** good story writing, I do not want me to die after 100 hours of emotional investment! Life is cruel enough, make the game be good!)
2) The PC decides everything and shapes the whole world. (It's not acceptable that siding with the mages or Templars results in the same mess! That might mean that I am but a human and, sometimes, the world does not care about what I want... I am the Champion! Respect my authority!)
3) The romance you play is the one-true-and-only love. (If the guy had someone else before, at least make him admit that he has never ever felt like this before! [=> Cullen] Or, at least, that it's been so long that I am special again! [=> Solas] OR that I am so especially special because he's never even met a woman like me before! [=> Blackwall])

In the end, those BioWare romances are a way to experience what is hard to come by in real life but what is suggested to be perfect from early childhood (yes, Mr Disney): one love, possibly on first sight, for life. "You are so special, you are the one, you will save the world - maker knows, you saved me - you are beautiful, on the inside and on the outside, there never has been and never will be anyone like you".

What I feel about that... I don't know. In fact, I do not even think much about it. It is a game, I know their intentions, that's about it. I just know that whenever they try to break out of this and make it more realistic (Thane, Jacob, Carth, etc.) it tends to feel completely over the top for me, even more so than the picture perfect romance you can have with the Kaidan/Cullen type. So, my option: If people want the Disney romance, let them have it. If they want Gone with the Wind, let them have that, too. Problem is just: BioWare can't offer all of this with the same character, so every character is a particular type of romance. They also cannot consider every single aspect of individual PCs in every cutscene. Big parts of the scenes just have to be player-independent. To ask even more than that is absurd... unless people are willing to wait not 3 but 10 years for the next entry to the franchise.

Besides, how much fun would this thread be if there was nothing left to argue about, because everyone gets a very individual experience without anything left to over-interpret. :-) So, just let some people be heart-broken and not accept that thought that Lavellan is the first and only love for Solas. ;-)

I really do appreciate how Bioware, especially in DA, experiments.

Origins, 2, and Inquisition have all been different games with different themes and different gimmicks. (Origins, Hero Caught Up In Circumstance Framed by a Handsome Dwarf, and Building A New Status Quo in the South, respectively.) And I really appreciate how they've branched out from the 'vanilla' romances.

We got a lot of variety in this one. They don't all end in sex cutscenes. Bull is quite happy to have several, but there's more to him than that. I mean, Solas, Josephine, Dorian, Cullen, Iron Bull, Cassandra, Sera, and Blackwall? Those are not very similar people. Those are not similar romances.  There's something for everyone.

Except for those who are still in love with Garrus, I suppose.
